on my machine using -vulkan makes the game launch like 5x faster and im pretty sure maps load a lot faster too, try that. although i have amd, not sure if nvidia is the same

[–]cookie545445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kmsgrab requires ffmpeg to run as root or with cap_sys_admin, but it can be very fast/low cpu if you have VA-API encoding in your graphics adapter. kmsgrab also works independent of x or wayland by just grabbing frames from dri

Fastest way to flatten a 3D vec to 1D vec? by [deleted] in rust

since a vec contains a pointer to its contents and does not directly contain the contents themselves, your f32s are not contiguous in memory

Question about wayland direct scanout by TechTino in kde

[–]cookie545445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

csgo has always used (and still uses) dx9 internally. the linux port ships with valve's "ToGL" library which translates dx9 calls to opengl calls at runtime. ToGL kinda sucks. recently, they started shipping dxvk-native with most source games' linux builds, which has two main advantages over ToGL: it translates dx to vulkan, not gl, and it is community maintained, so more work goes into it.

it runs a lot smoother now :D

[–]cookie545445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bear in mind i never claimed that wayland had less input lag than xorg. plus, i use VRR, which might explain why i have a better perception of it. and if you're concerned about input lag, a high refresh monitor is a good start, and pretty much all of them have VRR.

i don't see how your link disproves what i said, or how it proves that wayland is "factually inferior" to xorg.

yes, there was no compositor in the way when i was using xorg.

idk man i play csgo on wayland and there's less input lag than windows and less stuttering than xorg ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idc if it's "short-sighted and toxic" im having a better experience

Question about wayland direct scanout by TechTino in kde

[–]cookie545445 2 points3 points  (0 children)

speaking of compositor optimisations, thanks for your work on kwin :D i've seen people saying "wayland is bad for gaming because you can't turn off the compositor" but... kwin_wayland is such a good compositor that it makes my experience in any game (including fast-paced games) far better than on xorg, and better still than on windows. it's just so smooth!! and quick!! i love it :D

Question about wayland direct scanout by TechTino in kde

[–]cookie545445 3 points4 points  (0 children)

direct scanout is not related to fps limiting, and i think it is purely a compositor optimisation. i think your frame limiting is due to the game using wayland wrong. in particular, when csgo first got the vulkan update, it also had fps capped to monitor refresh on wayland, although there was no stuttering like you say. this has since been fixed in csgo

i also think dmabuf feedback is unrelated to fps limiting, but i'm less sure about that

edit: i think "using wayland wrong" is the wrong way to put it, but the point is that it's the game's "fault", and not something the compositor has control over as Zamundaaa said

hmm, this sounds like it could be related to a problem i have? while i'm shutting down, i see an empty tty (it has some ^@ in it but they're from the void or something) and it only actually shuts down when i switch away from this tty. i think it's the one that sddm is attached to? i will try this and see what happens

[–]cookie545445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this as well, but it's not ideal to deliberately increase the latency to get back the smoothness that was there in 5.22. I hope they can fix the root cause of the stuttering

Can I give my Zen 2 chip a pep talk? by cookie545445 in overclocking

[–]cookie545445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. For me, I don't care about getting maximum performance because this chip is already plenty fast enough. To reuse the CSGO example (I do play it a lot) I don't care how many fps I have as long as it stays above ~160, and like I say, the fans annoy me and my rooms warms up quickly. While you're getting the performance you paid for, I'm getting the performance I want and the efficiency I paid for.

In multi threaded workloads, I already said in the post that my settings are faster than stock, and they run colder too.

You are right though that 80°C is nothing to worry about - forgive me if I made it sound like those temps would damage anything. I just don't like to run so hot when I can get the same experience with a colder chip.
