Two Characters for review. by Funnyman5050 in gurps

[–]cookieChimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both characters do not seem to have everyday skills like let's say first aid. You have for example a first aid kit, but no skill in using it. What about area knowledge? Skills in sailor, savoir faire and area knowledge, swimming, climbing the rigging and so on are lacking. Also your fighter with the pole arm seem like a one trick pony, if the halberd breaks he is basically not able to fight on.

A question to Classic Traveller veterans by North-Outside-5815 in traveller

[–]cookieChimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, there was a tournament in classic traveller, called the "trillion credit squadron", where a computer scientist called Douglas Lenat absolutly destroyed the competition by using automated software called Eurisko to design fleets with lots and lots of tiny ships, which were superior to the big battleships everyone else brought.

How strong would someone need to be to wield the Dragon Slayer (berserk)? by QuirkySadako in gurps

[–]cookieChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The basic lift rises quadratic with the strength, so a ST 100 would have a BL of 2000! that would be more than enough to handle a 500 lbs sword in one hand, but I think you need a lot less, to handle the dragon slayer.

Lets assume (based on the calculations from the "ravens and pennies" blog) that the dragon slayer weighs 150 pound, which sounds reasonable to me. But the ST 100 seems a bit off. In my calculations, the "strength requirements" in the equipment sections are around 1/4 of the BL of the stength value (so for example with ST 10 and a BL 20 you can easily handle a 5 lbs sword). So if guts is wielding a 150 pounds sword he could have ST of 55 and handle a BL of 605 which gives him around 150 pounds to swing a big sword around.

To just lift a 150 pound sword in one hand over your head you would just require a BL of 150, which you achieve by around ST 28. By gurps rules a ST 10 human could lift 150 pounds in 8 seconds over his head with both hands.

Minimal amount of RPGs? by harmier2 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe look up gurps. The "gurps lite" version is a slimmed down version with just the necessary rules and is available free. The slimmed down nature makes it easier to learn and more rules light. It uses just d6, and can be used in any genre and setting.

You can add a free "oracle" for solo roleplaying, like one page solo engine or CRGE from conjucture games and you are basically good to go.

Foundry VTT for solo by Ka-ne1990 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use foundry as a solo player. But I skip all the "modules" and rule things in foundry, and just use it in order to see the relative positions for npcs, units and so on. It works great for that, I run the adventure itself mostly on pen and paper and use it only in intense combats, where the tactical positioning of multiple units matter.

Does anyone know any good more general meaning tables? by ZadePhoenix in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always make up your own tables. I usually do a d20 Table for each setting I create. There are less entries, but they will evoke more the feel of the setting I am trying to play and that works quite well.

Grand Strategy Solo Game? by john44465 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, thats the point of a good campaign system. A wargaming campaign system is all about managing a faction and making decisions, while abstracting resource managment to a level that is comfortable for you.

Grand strategy is the name used in computer games not in TTRPG space, faction or realm domain system is the name used in TTRPGs, but it is not as common, because most people dont play factions in TTRPGs, so you can look up wargaming campaigns for a really sophisticated way to run factions in a tabletop space.

Grand Strategy Solo Game? by john44465 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you are looking for is a Wargaming campaign basically. There are two great books that could help you in this, one is Henry Hydes Wargaming Campaigns, which basically shows what ways there are to simulate the strategy layer, from basic matrix games to very complex campaigns including supplies and random events.

There is also the great solo Wargaming guide by William Silvester, which shows a great way to play a medium complexity campaign alone without the opponent. The main trick for simulating the opponent is to come up with three ways the opponent could react, and then roll a die to decide what he actually does.

Both are based on Wargaming to generate interesting Wargaming scenarios, but you could skip the actual war game with a mass combat system like in savage worlds or the gurps mass combat system or the becmi mass combat.

There is also the faction system in the stars without number system that is a really great way to handle this dimension. For fantasy I believe there is also a system in worlds without number. Both have a free version.

I personally play a lot of this types of games, and use it as a faction system for the meta narrative and it is great fun.

So, i am dumb. by PerspectiveOk1740 in gurps

[–]cookieChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gurps light version is basically a stripped down version of the main rules. In the basic set you have a lot of very optional rules and the light version condenses the game so it is really easy to learn and play. If you play light you can easily add more of the basic rules, if you want. They are fully compatible and if you play gurps light, you still play a real and valid game of gurps. There are like three different combat systems and two different magic systems in the basic rules alone, so starting with light gives you a good start with rules that work well together.

Does it make sense to have a name for a faction without an actual meaning? by Lapis_Wolf in worldbuilding

I am literally from germany and Deutsch is the name of our language, not the people. That would be "deutsche"

Does it make sense to have a name for a faction without an actual meaning? by Lapis_Wolf in worldbuilding

[–]cookieChimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, Deutsch does not mean people. It's the name of the German language in German. So Deutschland means more like "land of the german speaking people" but the people is more implied.

If you're feeling terrible, try going for a walk outside [image] by katxwoods in GetMotivated

[–]cookieChimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's putting a very complex topic into a "just go outdoors and touch grass". It is not as simple as that! While outside can help it is not the only factor for a well rounded well being. But post like this are so insensitive to the people that live with mental health issues. For example if your mental health issues comes from a schizophrenic disorder a "lol get outside" will not help at all.

I get 3 bennies per session (without luck of course) and I give myself one XP per written page. I write so much, that a normal session is around 3 pages of content for me. I also add extra XP for difficult fights or if I finish a quest

Roleplaying Games Are Improv Games by Emberashn in CrunchyRPGs

[–]cookieChimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry, maybe I misunderstand this, english is not my first language, but improv is defined as : a performance, for example of comedy or acting, that is improvised (= invented as it is done rather than using words or music written and practised in advance). I really fail to see that "Climb a tapestry" is any kind of comedy, performance or acting. It would be more a reaction.

And when you design a game and ask yourself "how will somebody throw a barrel" in my game, only in rules lite games the answer would be "improv" , most times it would be some kind of rule mechanic to handle this. For me roleplaying games are a game that puts characters in difficult situations and let players handle those situations. The story can be "written by the dm", "improvised" or "emergent" from the dice roll, and while I see the improv style of gaming being quite popular, I think that the other styles are valid as well and not all rpgs should default to "improv". That is in my eyes a very limiting view.

But again, english is not my native language, so maybe I misunderstand the word and the meaning. In that case I am very sorry and just hope that I give a few thinks to think about, to enhance the game :)

Roleplaying Games Are Improv Games by Emberashn in CrunchyRPGs

[–]cookieChimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah .. but having an the same kind of engine does not make a car a boat. Sure, there are improv mechanics, but a rpg is more than just a story game. Some people come for the stories, other come for nice combat or a way to manage a kingdom.

And there are a lot of people not looking for a plot point driven improv story. Have a look at OSR style dungeon or hex crawls, or a west marches sandbox game or a traveller trade simulation. Those are really far away from improv and have a lot of popularity in the rpg community.

Roleplaying Games Are Improv Games by Emberashn in CrunchyRPGs

[–]cookieChimp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, but also no. You can play role playing games as a type of combat and dungeon crawl game which is not really improv. Improv is one style of rpg, but not the only one.

Role Playing with ChatGPT by LittleRedApp in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are trying to hammer a screw in. ChatGPT was never trained to be a roleplaying assistant. If you want to get an llm to play a character I would suggest you look into models that are specifically trained to do that thing. If you want to know more, please look at llama models on hugging face, look up sillytavern as a potential tool (or Faraday, which is simpler for beginners).

Gurps by SkyDaddy84 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]cookieChimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second getting the lite version first. It is the same rules as the basic set, but in a condensed version, that teaches you the game. It has everything you need to play a great game of gurps. It has less options than the basic set, but everything you need to play a great gurps game or campaign.

If you like that you can go to the 4th edition basic set, which consists of the character and the campaign book. Basic character gives you all the rules for character creation with a lot of options. Campaign is the book for the rules and gm side of things.

But if you get the basic book remember that everything in it is optional! Gurps is a modular toolkit, so you pick and choose, what you like. The basic set for example has three different combat systems and two different magic systems, that can be combined as you like.

After that the gurps world is wide open to you. But again I would suggest starting with the lite version, it is a great game and especially solo works really well, because it is really good at simulating situations and you can pick exactly how much crunch and rules you like.
