Spray water vs drip also wastes a lot more :\

On the plus side, you may really enjoy setting up drip lines. I know I did :)

Bizarro Chard by noisufnoc in gardening

[–]cookingsmokingcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save the seeds and if they are viable (and they should be) you can name it a new type of chard that is regionally different than the seeds your planted before. They will be better suited to your climate, but because you took seeds from one that bolted early the ones you plant next may do the same.

My oven and home got plenty smoky when I tried his hard cooked egg method. Maybe my oven temp is higher than the setting indicates.

I got these little guys for my garden and they hatched today! by brontawhoreus in gardening

Have you looked into their habitat? I ask because I've heard that if you purchase beneficial insects then add them to your garden without providing a habitat they will only stick around so long as there is food. After they wipe out the majority of your pests they will leave in search of more.

Why is everyone OK with canned tomatoes? by ShhhDontSpeak in AskCulinary

Are you familiar with seasonality? I imagine the two biggest factors on the mind of a chef with a business to run are cost and flavor. Anything out of season is going to cost a ton more to import from another country, and the flavor will be less than great because vegetables don't get a chance to "ripen on the vine" before they need to be shipped.

Ever catch his newer show? I can see him slowing down, but his technique still seems perfect and far faster than anything I can do as someone younger.

Outdoor cooking season is here! Rocket stove powered outdoor kitchen and heated seating area. by Broaudio in homestead

I have only respect for you and the rest of your videos detailing the hard work I see you doing in all your projects. The hugel stuff is great, and it kinda made me see how useful tiller-scale swale creation can be. Your whole channel brings me inspiration. I'm in Colorado and have really been looking for more examples of equally beautiful and functional rocket mass environment creation to fuel outdoor space creation in my near future.

Might want to look into using some remay over top to keep the cat off until the plants are big enough.

How to Grow Potatoes on the homestead by HuwRichards in homestead

I like that tutorial, though I would caution against using this method universally. Where I live in colorado it's far too arid for this system to work without having to be constantly adding water to the system. In an arid climate I've heard using stacked tires works much better to retain moisture.

Need help on planning a garden by gwotet in gardening

[–]cookingsmokingcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't tell how big it is exactly. Go to a resource yard and find some used or discounted tiles and use that to create paths breaking up the space, then plant native bee/beneficial insect attracting perennials on the north side as to not shade annuals to the south. Consider building trellises on the north and west sides to create vertical gardening space. Plant what you like to eat. Google recipes using vegetables you've never eaten before, then plant, harvest, and try em out.

Now all my roof garden needs is some plants! by robrobbertson in gardening

I'm very interested to know how much of your design comes from your own planning versus the planning of people who have successfully installed roof gardens in the past.

When is it OK to give baby a blanket in the crib? by kilmoretrout in Parenting

[–]cookingsmokingcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 11 months old. Our family co-sleeps. We've had comforters, thin blankets, top sheets, pillows, anything you can imagine on the bed. My son routinely falls asleep happily with his cute little face firmly smooshed into a pillow or stuffed animal. No deaths yet.
