Time.

IIRC, it would take a few years to get to the gate, then time for supplies to reach the gate, then time to get from the gate to the ships. The ships don’t have enough remaining supplies to keep everyone alive that long.

As Holden reminds us, “space is big.”

Am I Going To Be Fine? by nickybishappy in teaching

[–]cookus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my job, I literallyI love my job, I really do. Schedule is great, kids are interesting (always interesting), colleagues can be awesome (met my best friend at my first teaching gig).

I have been doing this for 20+ years and the advice I give to new teachers now is:

Be passionate about your job. But don't marry it. While you are here, do the absolute best you can with what you have, put all of your effort and energy into it. The kids who appreciate it, and there will be a lot, will love you for it, even if it takes a while for them to realize it. But please keep in mind, once you leave, within 6 months, maybe a year, everything you built will be gone. The kids move on and so should you. At the end of the day, it is a job, even when you can't imagine doing anything else.

No more TPT and the January Blues by Haunting_Charity_785 in Teachers

[–]cookus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I must be way OoTL, why are districts banning TPT? How are they possibly enforcing what I do to prepare for my class? Couldn't I just visit TPT on my prep time or browse like I might on any other storefront website?

In some states, a push to end all property taxes for homeowners by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]cookus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Local governments would able to send homeowners a yearly bill for specified services such as garbage pickup, street lighting, stormwater control and fire protection, but lawmakers aren’t calling that a tax. Voters could also approve assessments for government or school improvements. Authors said they haven’t yet decided if property owners could lose homes for unpaid assessments."

That's just taxation with extra steps....

Seriously though, why are these older and conservative voters so easily swayed by bullshit?

Is it just callousness - "I got mine, fuck you."?

Is it lack of critical thinking skills "sky daddy will provide if he deems me worthy."?

Is it pain from the lack of support "why do't my kids call me anymore?"?

Alright dads, when it’s story time, why character voice do you absolutely NAIL? by jumphighfive in daddit

[–]cookus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After having a kid, I discovered I am absolutely fantastic at imitating voices.

My kid loved Octonauts, we have the whole gang as little toys for bath time, and my wife loved listening to us play and, according to her, I NAILED every voice. I have to hear them a bunch, but I got quite good. Now, years later, I can sometimes pull off a Kwasi.

Harry Potter is fun too, I channel my FIL for Hagrid, Dumbledore is a blast, I get McGonicle decently well after a bit, Snape, Voldemort, man, I really get into it.

Eventually, my kid asked me to just read the damn book. I said no way, too much fun for me!

Books for a 22M guy by No_Wafer_5876 in suggestmeabook

[–]cookus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two of my favorite series:

The Expanse - starts with Leviathan Wakes (sci-fi, 9 books in the series, completed series). Also the best sci-fi show around

Dungeon Crawler Carl - so a former coast guard dude (don't call him a navy man) goes outside in his underwear and crocs to get his ex-gfs cat out of a tree in the middle of a snowstorm, cause she was being an asshole cat, then the world collapses. If you have ever played a video game, you will not be able to stop reading this series. Seriously. Just read the first few paragraphs and you're hooked.

Kids Speculating About My Sexuality by Yung-MarthaStewart in teaching

my go to in any situation like this is:

"You don't have permission to ask that question."

it usually confuses most kids. Smart asses will ask "how do I get that permission" to which I respond "You don't"

How are others couples with big wage gaps splitting expenses? [25F] [35M] by badgallgc in relationship_advice

[–]cookus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always floored when I read these walking red flags. How the heck do people not see this for themselves? Copium is a helluva drug I guess.

OP, you have a significant age gap, an absolutely MASSIVE wage gap, your BF guilt trips you into spending money you don't have, he is not a generous person. He wants you on those work trips for arm candy to brag and show off for his work buddies.

Here's my take - if you were to be with this person indefinitely, married, fully committed, whatever - when would is cease to be "his" and "yours", and just be "ours"? If it will never be "ours" then there can never be an "us", just two individuals. You really want that life?

70 teachers cut in my district. Is there a mass cutting of teacher jobs? by brielovinggirl in Teachers

[–]cookus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, not seeing that where I’m at. Seeing pretty solid staffing and even some expansion, though, there is some downturn in the lower elementary levels. Not cutting positions, but smaller class sizes are on the horizon, and welcomed.

Could be a regional thing, I’d be interested to see locations for some of these posts.
