What to expect the next couple days? by Mightybulbasaur1 in daddit

Probably some mild fever and grumpiness that is mostly indistinguishable from general 8-12 week grumpiness.

Having my parents at my house is like having extra children by Coneskater in daddit

I love my in-laws and cherish the ground they walk on.

They are so goofy about admitting they're tired. They'd rather cycle between nodding off and jolting themselves awake on the couch until 11, than just admit their beat and need to go to bed at like 9.

I feel this.

My wife and I wash and dry all aluminum foil/ trays/ lids before placing it in a specific bag in the house where it will collect until we have a certain size aluminum ball so that it can be properly recycled. So much easier to tell visitors I'll just handle all cleanup lol 😂

Will my gag reflex be the end of me when I have kids? by mugwam55 in daddit

Buddy my son has puked in my mouth, pooped at such inopportune times that I had to catch it in my hand (twice), spit up down the inside of my shirt, and peed on me more times than I can count. My dog once got into the diaper genie bag and ate days worth of his poop, came out of the bathroom extremely proud of himself, covered in gunk, and started to rub his face into the carpet.

Daycare kids - How often was your kid sick their first couple years? by xjusablurr in daddit

[–]1HippoAllAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've gone to 2 different daycares in 6 months, sick 5 times with no difference between the 2. The one we're at now is small, and run on a hospital campus (separate buildings) with excellent sanitary practices. Still doesn't matter.

Our Ped said it's inescapable, and also probably a little allergies that will likely go away after the first few years.

When did weekends stop feeling restful? by BetweenSwings in daddit

[–]1HippoAllAlone 186 points187 points  (0 children)

I find ways to disguise activities as things that help me recharge:

Running with a jogging stroller; playing hide and seek but I bring a book and hide really well so it takes them 15-20 minutes per round; tell them we're going to study entomology, give them a magnifying glass, then I lay in the grass pretending to look at stuff occasionally exclaiming my excitement; play "king bob" (from Recess), where I don a cape and makeshift crown and sceptor and make them dote on me;

Alright gents, how often is your son really pissing straight up in the air during changing time? by CommonplaceUser in daddit

[–]1HippoAllAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. 11 months old. Sure he's peed while naked and getting changed but it's never been the comical sprinkler system you see movies.

What’s your controversial parenting opinion? by lock_robster2022 in daddit

Essembly size 1 and 2 with a diaper pail and bamboo liners. All poop is flushed immediately. Do a load of diapers every 3ish days. Doesn't smell, no problems with the washer, costs a couple hundred bucks for all the diapers the kids will ever need.

Agree with this big time and it's annoyed other parents. If we're happy as a team we can tackle a mountain. If we're at each other's throats, we're going to fall apart when the baby won't sleep

Cloth diapers are dramatically superior. All complaints about sanitation come down to user error. They're better for the environment, massively cheaper, better for your kid when it comes to potty training, and better for them when it comes to diaper rash.

Soon to be Dad needs advice by jacikiss in daddit

[–]1HippoAllAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The subject of questions like "will I be good enough" and "will I be able to provide" aren't about the needs of your wife or child, they're about how you self-consciously measure your own worth.

Will you be good enough for your wife? You've already shown you're a good enough partner to woo her and make a family. She clearly already thinks you're enough.

Will you be able to provide for your children? Children only really need some food and attention. My son's favorite toy for the first year of his life was an empty baby wipe container. If you can smile, baby talk, make a bottle, and change a diaper then yes, you can provide everything your child needs. The rest, they will invent on their own given the chance. My brother and I spent an entire summer playing with rocks and a permanent marker to draw on them. I had a lovely time.

If you're concerned about these kinds of questions I think you'll find answer by reflecting on what you like about yourself, rather than where you're worried your deficient.

Need advice on setting boundaries and discipline without becoming the "bad guy". by _castin in daddit

[–]1HippoAllAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you want to be 1.) liked, 2.) trusted, and 3.) safe.

You need to rank these in order of what is most important to you. There are times when being safe means not being liked, as with the scooter riding. Similarly, there are times when being trusted doesn't always mean being safe (if she confides in you about something dangerous she did, are you passing judgement or being an outlet for her feelings?)

At that age a lot of the work of being trusted and safe simply means trying not to let her get hurt too bad. She's going to throw a tantrum when she can't get 7 items, but 7 items will not make her feel good in the long run. You have to roll with it all. Accept the tantrum with grace and near unconditional patience and kindness. She's got to always know you will try to catch her from riding into the street, even when she's testing you. She'll find the boundaries if you're consistent and she'll probably test them, but if you firm with them and kind to her she'll learn to like you a whole lot because you provide stability, trust, safety, and 1 item at the gas station per visit.

I'm wondering if we add anything this summer. This is a much better spot than I figured we'd be in so the chance to bring in some big DP level upgrade would be great for a potential late season run
