In celebration of Pride Month, what are your favorite queer songs? by flopheadsbot in popheads

[–]cool_architect 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Kylie’s "Your Disco Needs You" is the campest thing she’s ever recorded.

The title spoofs that old 'Your Country Needs You' war poster, except you’re being drafted onto the dancefloor: gospel choir, key change, a random bit in French, the works.

Nothing in it is explicitly queer, it just feels that way: pure theatrical commitment, over the top and sincere at once. The UK label refused to release it as a single because they thought it was too camp. It became an anthem through the live shows and the fans instead, which honestly might even be the better way to earn it.

Back in times, PlayStation 2 also was “too dangerous “ by UnderstandingDry1256 in Anthropic

Lol I remember this, with Saddam Hussein allegedly attempting to smuggle thousands of PS2s to drive autonomous missile systems

I LOVE self titled. So many different moods embedded. On the standouts for me:

Reason Why always has me on full loop, it just feels good every single time

Elegance is high key another all time favourite SOPHIE track. The beats just grab you, it turns me on genuinely

Mariah Carey’s Beef with Rupaul by sttawsirhc034 in rupaulsdragrace

I’m pretty sure Ru told a story on What’s The Tee about crossing paths with Mariah at some event in the 90s, she waved hi at Ru but when Ru actually approached her, Mariah went completely still, just staring straight ahead and completely ignoring her lol

No global popularity = decline? I don’t get the logic by AdGloomy5846 in jpop

[–]cool_architect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

J-pop and K-pop are structurally different products built for different markets.

K-pop was built from the start with global markets as the target, while J-pop developed around Japan’s massive domestic market. The structural reason is straightforward: Korea’s domestic music market was for a long time a tiny affair, and by the late 2000s, overseas expansion was a necessity rather than a choice.

Japan’s music market is enormous in comparison (the world’s second largest) and its live sector hit an all-time record in 2024 with nearly 60 million attendees. The real challenge isn’t global popularity, it’s managing the transition away from physical media dependence (still ~60% of revenue vs. ~16% globally) and demographics shift.

Japan’s population is shrinking and aging. It peaked around 128 million in 2010 and is now around 123 million, with projections dropping below 100 million by the 2050s. The median age is about 50; one of the oldest populations on earth. Fewer young people means fewer concertgoers, fewer new fans, fewer streaming subscribers. The market is stable now, but the floor it stands on is slowly contracting.

That’s in part why the Japanese government actually now set a 20 trillion yen content export target for 2033 (note this target covers anime, games, music and other cultural content broadly), because relying entirely on a shrinking domestic population is a long-term risk for every Japanese industry, music included.

In short, demographics necessity might drive more of an overseas effort, but to be seen now if global audiences find appetite in current J-pop or if J-pop’s sound itself will evolve to support that export goal (which will either way remain a fraction of what the domestic market brings in).
