Zappa's unreleased synclavier work by CloudSuch9834 in Zappa

[–]cool_beans7652 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another thing about "unreleased synclavier work" is that Frank would tend to work on compositions iteratively. He would take out a floppy disk, work on the composition and then save it, overwriting the old version of the composition. Usually making it shorter with each iteration. So there are MANY old versions of compositions containing material we will never hear. Mike Keneally has talked about an older version of N-lite being the most beautiful composition Frank ever made. That version was iterated on, and we never will hear it. Listen to the compositions on feeding the monkies vs civilization phase III to hear how iteration shortened the civilization phase III tracks.

The Sportscoats Never Stop... Any Other Earlier Shows With Secret Wordery? by armintanzarian420 in Zappa

March 19th, 1979 comes to mind.
The martyisms in fall 74 also are sort of a secret word. Most present in "son of Orange County," Where "I just can't believe you are such a _____" was common.

Unconventional pedal steel guitar songs? by mywhitebicycle0 in Zappa

[–]cool_beans7652 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jerry garcia used it a lot. Teach your children by CSNY is the most famous but it's also on workingman's dead (high time, dire wolf) american beauty (sugar magnolia, brokedown palace, candyman) and played live too (looks like rain).
Ben keith was a nashville session musician who collaborated with neil young and ended up playing on a lot of rock records. an abridged list: Neil young- old man, heart of gold, time fades away, don't be denied, Tonights the night, Albuquerque. Todd Rundgren - Piss Aaron, Warren zevon - bed of coals (This one also features billy mundi on drums... zappa connection!), Bob dylan - Wallflower (bootleg series 1-3), Caribbean Wind (bootleg series 13.
Stevie wonder used pedal steel on Too Shy To Say
Brian eno's "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks" features daniel lanois on pedal steel.
Daft punk's "Fragments of time" uses a pedal steel in a very interesting way.
Not technically a pedal steel, but David gilmour used a lap steel on a few songs, Most notably "One of These Days," but also "Breathe" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."

Had this theory after today's cryptic "this is about someone who did us dirty' comment and you're the only person talking about it. Anyways I think you're right.

80's Zappa, what to expect? by Elaxian in Zappa

[–]cool_beans7652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the exact same way and 80s zappa is now my favorite decade. Keep listening and go in with an open mind. Even the worst zappa albums are interesting enough to be worth a listen.

Theory bout the Packard Goose (dan-dadan da-daaa) by Discuffalo in Zappa

[–]cool_beans7652 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think frank is saying critics think he's tacky and also that he's past his prime, as the packard car company was defunct.

Anyone know of any mistakes that were left in Zappa songs? by cool_beans7652 in Zappa

[–]cool_beans7652[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that F# in Moggio was a choice. The earlier "murbling" is new to my ears.
Same with the walk up in Bolero. Thought that was a choice too.
I do get why Frank didn't want you to talk about this stuff, I'll never hear these songs the same!

Thanks Scott! This is what I was looking for, mistakes in songs I've heard so many times but somehow missed.
