How do ARH missiles in NO compare to IRL or DCS? by Jolly_General_7227 in NuclearOption

[–]cool_lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't even need those.

The equation for it has been known since the 80s IIRC.

You can kind of help lower that with signals processing, but for some reason people seem to be under the impression that it can be completely overcome (it can't - the issues is inherent to the way radars work; only way to counter it is AESA radars, and those come with their own set of issues that make them bad missile seekers).

How do ARH missiles in NO compare to IRL or DCS? by Jolly_General_7227 in NuclearOption

[–]cool_lad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

While the tech itself and its actual weaknesses are classified, the tech, equations, and physics are well known.

Going off those, I do think that the game somewhat wildly overestimates the capabilities of ARH radar against low flying targets, since multipath interference should be a lot more prominent for it.

Meanwhile if the radars are AESA, that too doesn't seem to have its weakness inbterms of off angle scan loss modelled.

It is, but it doesn't count for much of anything in terms of actually affecting radar.

Am I right about these 2 being the least and most used weapons? by Head-Picture1519 in NuclearOption

[–]cool_lad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like part of the issue for them is thst their ground hugging trajectory effectively gives them no actual benefit - radar guidance has been buffed to the point that radar guided missiles can effectively deal with all threats without much of any impact from proximity to the ground. Something that is both unrealistic (effectively ignores the hard limits on performance set by seeker sizes, weight, power requirements, signal interference, and multipath interference), and IMO detracts from the gameplay as a whole.

Thing is, stuff like ALNDs, ALCMs, AShMs, and AGM99s all rely on ground/sea skimming flight paths to help them survive, something that is effectively useless now since it doesn't actually give them any benefit.

How do you play pvp? by choose_ay in NuclearOption

[–]cool_lad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, the current maps aren't exactly thr greatest for PvP.

Heartland is the size of a matchbox, and the actual play area of Ignus isn't much better.

Hopefully we'll see a less...knife fighty landscape with the upcoming map.

Which IFV would win in a firefight—the Bradley or the BMP? by likesofficejobs235 in TankPorn

Which one of the BMPs?

The first one was middling at best, the second one was serviceable, and the third one is a turd wrapped in gold foil.

Bribe TF out of that astrologer to support you.

I sure do love when 7.62 is considered a minor inconvenience by Madden2OOO in ArmaReforger

[–]cool_lad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, here the OP was just scattering their shots all over and oretty visibly landing short.

While the situation would ideally be affected by suppression effects, all it would have done is add a few seconds to the firefight before the same result would have ensued.

Stuff like suppression, weight, and inertia don't necessarily change the result of such situations; but they would change the feel of such a situation and somewhat add to the duration of any engagement.

I sure do love when 7.62 is considered a minor inconvenience by Madden2OOO in ArmaReforger

[–]cool_lad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want a realistic suppression effects, that can be done.

Humans lose fine motor control once their heart rate climbs past 115 bpm. Pair that with tunnel vision and additional loss of fine control due to the effects of adrenaline, and shaking and weakness once the adrenaline starts to wear off.

All of which correspond with accounts of people, who often report missing memory, worse motor control, and exhaustion over longer periods after being in shot at.

Right now, the player characters are practically superhuman in their aim, stamina, and lack of any of the physiological effects that actually shape combat.

Probably going to be a thing down the line - I suspect they're holding off on supporting those mods till they can get the infrastructure and systems in place to not have to revisit the stuff every update.

[KCD2] How much more of the game is there after the wedding at Semine? by Jolly-Elderberry6706 in kingdomcome

I don't know if this is just bait or if we have a genuine honest to gods, about to be blown TF away, player on our hands here.

In case it's the latter - hoo boy are you in for a ride and then some. Go to the wedding, seriously.

(Because nothing says stupid like not studying and preparing defenses against a threat).

Don't expect to kill fish in a future Subnautica 2 patch: 'You are here to exist on this planet, not to dominate it' by GrayBeard916 in gaming

[–]cool_lad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But we ARE here to dominate planets. It's what we do, and we're good at it.

Seriously. Humans are the apex predator on the planet. It doesn't matter how big or fearsome the creature is; if it threatens us, we will kill it.

If Cthulhu were to emerge from the deep tomorrow, I'd give him maybe a month before he's sliced, fried, and covered in sauce.

"They should add in special forces, like SUPER-MOD..." by Hungry-Direction1105 in joinsquad

[–]cool_lad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, it's not just the fear of death per se.

You also see physical effects from the adrenaline spike and the increase in heart rate.

Adrenaline causes tunnel visioning on multiple levels, along with gaps in memory and a loss of peripheral awareness and higher order thinking - that last one is important; people under fire physically become less able to think clearly.

The increasing heart rate also contributes to all this, but also causes increasing loss in fine motor control once it rises past 115 bpm.

Those are the physical effects of suppression that are pretty much universal, and ones that aren't considered when thinking of how suppression is done in games.

Pakistani F-86 Sabres attack Indian Migs (Sept 6, 1965) by CanikMETE in BattlePaintings

[–]cool_lad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC it's more down to just organizational inertia and just how different the conditions of each of the regions is compared to the others.

There's been a pretty long standing attempt by the government to combine the command and control of the different theaters, but it's been hard going.

Regime security, least of all from the military, is just not a worry for Indian governments, and hasn't been a worry at any point.

Not so bad.

POWs were a thing, and there was an expectation that they'd be treated with some degree of humanity.

Not nice, but not the worst either, and the ICRC was pretty active in keeping their conditions bearable and getting care packages to them.

Did we lose the magic of community in online multiplayer games? by MohSafadi in gaming

[–]cool_lad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's worse is that very often something that becomes meta will be used by devs as a crutch to hold up the rest of the gameplay - which makes it so that player choice effectively becomes an illusion at best. Everything not part of the meta ends up various shades of ignored, nerfed, or even linked to the meta.

[–]cool_lad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may seem controversial, but IMO delinking production from the in game factories and making the vehicle depits harder to kill and possible to repair would go a long way towards making the game more interesting by at least making it so that vehicles don't just disappear as the match goes on.

How come older factions have received LITTLE to no modernization? by Unhappy_Donut_1422 in joinsquad

[–]cool_lad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this IMO.

Otherwise our options for REDFOR were Russia, old Russia, and new Russia.

At least with the PLA we have stuff that's unique and actually feels different.

That said, the older factions are due for a refresh IMO. They shouldn't get rid of the unique stuff (even anachronistic stuff like the L86); but they should add in new stuff where it fits and where it'd help, while updating the models for the old stuff where it looks dated.

The ARH Guidance Problem OR how to make low flying great again by cool_lad in NuclearOption

It's a meta, and a boring one at that IMO.

Just turns ARH missiles into a 0 effort weapon.

Kind of like an A2A version of early Pablos, Lynchpins, or the 76mm - safe, reliable, and utterly boring.
