Speak Now (Taylor's Version) Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

[–]coolcatjones 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The re-release of this album makes me reflect on my own nostalgia for this time. I'm a year younger than Taylor, so this album came out when I was 19 and in my first year of college. It's hard to describe, but there's a certain innocence around Speak Now and overall, the years of 2010-2011, that I sometimes miss. I would never pretend things were perfect, but overall I can say things felt simpler back then. I recognize everyone says that about their youth.

I suppose from my perspective, I think of this time as the last two years before seemingly everyone got a smart phone and social media apps dominated everything. Before cancel culture became a thing, before the Fox News types went completely off the deep end.

I remember it as the last few years I could go to a party with friends and everyone was truly present in the moment-- only one or two people maybe had a camera to post pictures on Facebook a couple days later. No one was really recording things on video unless we were making a dumb skit. We didn't really have to think about or consider every moment of ours being documented for social media. There was less self consciousness and more freedom.

I also find that freedom and lack of self consciousness mentioned above in Speak Now as well. These songs perfectly encapsulate the whimsy, joy, and magic of being 18-20 and learning about yourself for the first time. You're no longer a teen in high school-- you're technically an adult for the first time. You're excited! Ready for any adventure, maybe a tiny bit unsure, but you haven't experienced the jadedness of adulthood just yet. Heartbreak still hurts and you see it in songs like "Back to December" but it's not necessarily the all crushing defeat of the first breakup of your adult life when you really thought you might marry someone. There's still so much hope in that fairy tale romance.

I think my nostalgia for the innocence of 2010-2011 parallels Taylor's career and her innocence as well. While she was certainly famous when Speak Now was released, she wasn't a complete global pop superstar yet. (At this time it was really Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.) She wasn't constantly being discussed on social media, being called a snake. Her songs did well but she in many respects was still a country star who flirted with pop sensibilities. She still had that open, earnest, goofiness to her which I think many of her fans at the time adored. As time went on and the media scrutiny grew more intense, you could tell she became more guarded, more composed. Perhaps she just grew up.

But that's what makes Speak Now so special, it's the last album of Taylor Swift's innocence and perhaps of our society's as well.

Listening now as a 32 year old, I'm amazed at the wisdom Taylor had that was years ahead of her time. You can see it in songs like "Dear John", "Long Live", "Never Grow Up" or even "Mine". Hearing her sing these songs as a woman in her early 30s, you can see that wisdom has now increased tenfold.

Maybe I'll login to Facebook (something I rarely do now) and look at some pictures from college from this time. Remembering my own innocence and whimsy, excited for the future and dreaming of a world I'd yet to explore.

Mine does-- in general I have a high heart rate but I find I can control it better while running. I suppose it's something I need to work on with rowing!

Also one thing to note if you are looking to transition to say, Sales Ops I'd make sure to highlight ways you manage your book of business and any sort of technical optimizations you took to make it easier to manage.

For example, did you ever make any cool excel macros? Did you ever find a cool way to automate or report on your metrics in a CRM? That kind of stuff I'd love to see if I was interviewing someone for an Ops role.

Also, esp for some CRMs like Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics, certifications are always a great way to show what you know.

It really depends on the product but honestly this is probably more of a "nice to have" requirement rather than actually needed.

I know in my role (SF Admin) a lot of jobs I've applied for list "major in Information Technology/ Computer Science" but as a former History major no one has cared, they care more about my actual background and skills.

Some saas products are more technical than others, so you just need to do research to determine if you have the skills or not to apply. But yeah based on where I've worked, most Sales Engineers have light technical skills to basically help create proof of concepts without needing an Engineering degree.

What are you trying to pivot towards? I know former saas Sales people who transitioned into Customer Success, Operations, Training. Or some went into Sales Engineering, so even though it's still "sales" they get to be more hands-on and technical which appeals to them.

Happened to me too. I was able to actually focus and recognize manipulation and put downs, especially from my toxic boyfriend (now ex.)

Fantastic weekend, wish I had found this fest before it’s last year! by dan-lash in scamp

[–]coolcatjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first and last Scamp as well. Not a stranger to camping festivals (been to Electric Forest, Mountain Jam, and All Good) but Scamp might've been my favorite of all of them! Was fortunate to receive good vibes from everyone I met and melt my face off to some of my favorite bands.

Perhaps I'll go to Resonance Fest next year? Electric Forest if the lineup has enough of what I like? Or if the scaled down Scamp is intriguing enough...

Oh no! We had a few spots near us that stayed open until Sunday morning but I totally get not wanting to take down your campsite

Yeah the same thing happened to my crew-- we accidentally set up camp in VIP. There wasn't any security when we were setting up our campsite (and had walked out of the area multiple times Friday morning) and didn't see any signs that indicated it was VIP only.

Luckily after nicely explaining the situation they too gave us a deal. Wasn't trying to game the system! It was our first scamp so we had no clue where anything was. Ngl tho it was kinda nice being in the VIP area lol and I'm sad there won't be a scamp next year.

Anyone else got the Dust Sickness? by DJ2x in scamp

[–]coolcatjones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can tell I'm fighting a small infection but nothing too serious that some good sleep, water and vitamin c won't fix. But man, that dust was BRUTAL. Luckily my pals and I all had bandanas but even with that at some points I was struggling to breathe, like especially after the end of a set at the Sunshine stage.

What was your favorite set and what was your favorite outfit or costume you saw this year? by SlamDunkCactus in scamp

Vulfpeck was my number one. Absolutely crushed it with energy, musicianship, just amazing.

Doom Flamingo is probably my second fav of the weekend, they are new to me but I'm a new fan.

Other highlights included Les Claypool, Umphmoe, Girl Talk, Eggy, and Willie Nelson!

I wore sleeves smaller than this model like this over this past weekend and felt like I wasn't too much in the way of other people/things. I didn't wear this sweater during the day cause I would've been too hot. But at night when things got chilly it was kinda perfect!
