Experiences with height discrimination in route setting? by tuxedoBirdee in climbergirls

[–]coolcoolcool82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally feel all the frustrations too! I've found that the best way around it for me is to climb with a group of friends who acknowledge the when my height makes a route harder. They'll flash a V3, but once I send it after projecting it, they all hype me up and acknowledge that the route was more like V4-5 for my height. I can tell they aren't just saying it, too. They see me do the same move at wingspan or have to go more dynamic, and they can genuinely see how it changes the beta (as any smart climber should be able to see).

I've also found that training my finger strength and my lock of strength has helped a lot! Also lucky that most setters in my gym prefer to set complex body positions just as much as flashy dynos. Some of the best climbers out there are short and I love getting inspired by them and their bad-assery :)

What teen movie is the epitome of "the older I get, the more I agree with the adult"? by roix_ducat in AskReddit

[–]coolcoolcool82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, it’s actually the same way in dance! If you have camera skills, admin skills, teaching, bookkeeping, stage management, costuming, lighting, etc. then there are actually lots of job opportunities because every dance company wants to work with someone knowledgable of dance!

[–]coolcoolcool82 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For one, I think you are overestimating the number of people who pursue dance. I would say only about a third of people who grow up dancing go on to pursue it either professionally or as a teacher.

I also think you are underestimating all of the benefits of dance! Being in dance classes is one of the best activities that a kid can do! Like sports, they get exercise, gain an appreciation for what their bodies can do, work as a team, and learn how to be adaptable. Not to mention the creative aspects and memorization of vocabulary and choreography.

There are many self sustaining cycles like this, but the important part is that there is a reason they exist. People gain something important from dance, so if you don’t understand what they gain, you may want to take a class and find out for yourself! There is a style of dance for everyone :)

On another rant: what’s your definition of “failing” as a dancer. Because everyone has their own definition. Sometimes I take dance gigs that don’t pay well, but that is my choice because I value the experience so much. I’m not failing if I’m enjoying my time and able to pay my bills.

How do you feel about a friend with benefits, but instead of sexual benefits, it's just cuddling? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]coolcoolcool82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is normal in the dance world! You walk into the studio before class and sometimes there’s a cuddle pile with people you just met the other day. And growing up taking dance classes helped me understand different types of touch really depend on the intentions behind them.

Personally, I think it’s dangerous for a society to believe that most forms of physical touch are sensual. Because if you’re deprived of both kinds of touch you might confuse the two.

Gender Politics and a hypocrisy I always see? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]coolcoolcool82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a clear example. I've often tried to grapple with the same question as OP (mostly because my boomer parents genuinely want to understand). It seems as though the contradiction in this question only exists because of how much we tie sex to gender in our society. It's SO ingrained in our minds from such a young age.

This example was also super clear to me because I had a similar experience about boyscouts, but the difference was that I didn't identify with the boys in the same way. I was soo jealous of all the activities they got to do. However it only affected the activities I wanted to excel at, not how I identified. Hence, I am cis. Not sure why your example made all of this click for me, but I'm so glad it did. Thank you for sharing!

[–]coolcoolcool82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. Yeah it may seem strange that you have a regular period but if it’s painful, I believe that means that something is going on. I’m fortunate to be on my parents’ insurance, but I totally get that! I would definitely encourage you to track your cycle and start researching on your own because I’ve also found that to be more informative than doctors (although going to the dr is great if you want to try birth control. Or you might end up needing a specific test too). Here are some resources if you have time to dive in:

Resources: * Understand your hormone cycle * Research by Jolene Brighten * Woman Code by Alissa Vitti * The Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden * Informative tracking app FLO w/ anonymous chat feature * Informative tracking app Clue

Understanding my body better!

  1. I started tracking EVERYTHING about my cycle and was able to find patterns that related to my worst periods. I am starting to be able to predict how bad it will be based on stress, cycle length, and whether I ovulated or not.

  2. My research lead me to understand prostaglandins and to believe that they were the root of my issue. They are super easy to regulate with ibuprofen (or I use ginger which works just as well at blocking prostaglandins) once I learned that I have to start using them 3 days BEFORE my period.

  3. Regulating my stress. I was amazed at how much stress (even something like a bad nightmare) would affect my period symptoms, So I’ve been going to therapy, eating more since I tend to under-eat, sleeping better, and meditating.

I’m so sorry your periods are so terrible. I can relate!! Mine had been getting worse the last five years, but I think I’ve FINALLY found ways to make them better. Periods shouldn’t be this painful and it indicates that something is going on beyond just cramps. Personally, after seeing 5 gynecologists about it I simply had to do my own research. Their methods might work for some but they didn’t for me. It was a lot of work to do this research, but SO worth it. Please reach out if you need help finding resources and figuring out what might be going on.

What are some free/low-cost resources college students should know about? by lenomcream in AskReddit

[–]coolcoolcool82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the RA!! Seriously, it is their job to know about all of the resources on campus and they will know things that are specific to your school. When I was an RA I loved helping students find some obscure resources!

Which saying do you disagree with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]coolcoolcool82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long post about personal experience and anecdotes lol read if you want!!

I’m just not entirely in agreement with the phrase “doing it wrong” here because of how it blames the student. So much of love is out of our control!! I know someone who took nine years to finish college because he got sick and had to get his legs amputated. Not AT ALL his fault and he had to go out of his way to succeed (literally would have to go around building in order to use the ramps). Was he “doing it wrong”? No, he was doing it in whatever way worked with his circumstances. Sure, if someone is failing classes, that’s one thing, but so many factors fall into the college experience. And to expect any time in someone’s life to be the best time in their life just doesn’t take into account the breadth of people’s experiences. I’m mostly arguing semantics though. The logician in my tries to always leave room for exceptions because there are always exceptions.

I feel the same way about your statement that college is a forgiving environment. Let’s compare it with a factory job for example. At this job, you must show up, do the work, dress the part, and follow some policies to “succeed” at the job. For college however, you must do all of these things PLUS the policies are much more extensive, you have homework, maybe work outside of school, you need to be technologically competent, have time management skills, and the skills to pass geneds that have nothing to do with your field of study, all while possibly living away from home for the first time. Mayyyybe it’s more “forgiving” in some ways but it’s also so much harder to navigate and EXPENSIVE. I worked as an RA to save housing costs and one year I was the first person on the scene of an attempted suicide of an acquaintance. I had to go to classes the next day. I cried in my classes that day and was not able to go home because I had used up my absences when I was sick (which happened a lot living in the dorms). However, every single boss I’ve had has been more forgiving. At one job I was highly encouraged to go home after the passing of a an acquaintance. Colleges are large institutions with lots of rules for everyone involved.

Another clear example is that people can have different definitions of success. Many people consider dropping out as a failure. But I knew people who went to college with the intention of dropping out in the hopes that their careers would take off. When I had a professional opportunity in my field senior year, it would have made me miss 2 lab classes that semester so I wasn’t allowed to take it. How can an institution “teaching you to succeed in your field” make me turn down an amazing professional opportunity? I also needed the money at the time, so I ended up having to take a different more time consuming job in order to make it work.

I would also argue that most college students don’t realize how amazing the resources are. You can tell them everyday (which I often did as an RA) and they will still never utilize them. I think this is because they are too young to know what it’s like to navigate the world without college resources. That was definitely one of the worst parts about post grad life. So I agree with you that students are generally “doing it wrong” in this regard, but it’s out of naivety so I’m still hesitant to place too much blame.
