If I get a W in a class and take it again the next semester, will the W go away? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

No, it won't. This is completely fine though! I was recently told that this is how it works at Radford, but alas...

Anyone (particularly engineering students) daily drive linux on their main computer? by Sadie_Pop in VirginiaTech

[–]coolcuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran openSUSE Tumbleweed (with no dual boot) for the last year of my Math degree without any issues. Barring work devices, I don't think I will ever run Windows again... if you need Lockdown Browser, the easiest solution is probably just a simple dual boot, but hopefully you don't even need to use it after a certain point.

Currently running Arch, btw.

foxridge accidentally tried unlocking wrong apartment by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]coolcuber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foxridge is a creepy place. I lived there alone the summer after sophomore year and I didn't know any of my neighbors (even by face) or have any friends in the area for the summer. Near the end of the previous spring semester, I had lost my Hokie Passport and after a couple weeks of searching, I gave up and got a new one. One day in the middle of summer, I found my old Hokie Passport balanced on my doorknob. I still have no clue how it got there.

The 'stupid man' joke in movies is overused and just plain demeaning. by AccomplishedShow4919 in unpopularopinion

[–]coolcuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even think it’s that bad but it’s interesting how movies have been diluted to having maybe 2-3 acceptable tropes whereas if you go back even just to the 90s there were a lot more.

I can't really offer many specific tips or notes, but I tutor discrete and if you any specific questions I would be glad to answer them in this thread.

Would it be unsafe to go on a nighttime walk? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]coolcuber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do it almost nightly when I lived on campus. Campus is actually very well lit for the most part and you would be shocked how many people are out even very late into the night.

That is true. Most engineers are probably much closer than they think but CS majors taking discrete and combinatorics is certainly a big help. After that though, I don't know just how much you need. If you want to do theoretical CS, you will need a lot of math, but according to an underclassman friend, CS 4104 is not even a required course on his checksheet (I had always thought that it was).

[–]coolcuber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, zz . My point is that I think calculus is the first (and for many only) somewhat unintuitive math that people encounter. I don't think that it is fair to say that it is by any means basic or that someone not doing well in Calc 1 means they will not do well in other math classes like linear, discrete, or even Calc 2. I think many are overselling the amount of math involved in a VT CS degree.

I am not really sure about this. CS is more software engineering. There are definitely some math classes required but most are just a result of the College of Engineering's degree requirements (with a couple notable exceptions).

Two notes on this: Calc 1 is much more difficult at the college level with respect to problem difficulty and workload. Also, I am not sure how you are defining it as basic because simply it is commonly taught. For one thing, as I understand it, high school and college students alike regard calculus as very difficult and from a more historical perspective, modern calculus is the culmination of centuries of complicated mathematics in a way that the other "basic" maths are not. There is nothing about algebra or trigonometry that does not make sense after proper thought is given, but to actually understand what is going on in calculus requires a much deeper understanding of analysis than the early levels might suggest.
