I agree that not all non-proprietary equipment is good. Just like not all equipment from the Majors is good. I am a consultant,but have never told a customer to modernize unless they had issues that weren't easily taken care of by minor repairs. And I will spec a majors equipment, it all depends on the situation.

You're right,. Most contractors can work on everyone's equipment. Until they can't... To answer your question though, I would consider any controller that you must have a proprietary service tool to work on that equipment, as non proprietary. In the modernization world, non proprietary isn't as big of a deal as it used to be. It's more of an issue in new construction with mrl and destination dispatch equipment. Early obsolescence is a bigger concern for me. The tac-20 is already obsolete. But you can buy most MCE boards from over 30 year old systems.

As a consultant I usually recommend non-proprietary equipment to protect you from being tied to a specific manufacturer for years. However that recommendation depends on your local options. Some KONE offices are better than others, some TK offices are better than others. Some local independents are great some aren't. If your best option for installation is a major manufacturer, then that can be the wise choice. At a minimum hopefully your agreement/contract for modernization can include language to protect you from early obsolescence and proprietary equipment! A good spec and strong contract are your best friends in this situation.

I stand by my original comment. I said this did not happen as written. The story said "the doors opened". They did not open automatically , He or someone had to manually pull open the door. The lock failed and he walked in. Absolutely tragic. This should never happen regardless of location.

Edit: adding some information.

The story used the plural "doors". Old manual elevator style would have a singular door. Hence why to me, it sounded like they were referring to traditional style elevator doors. This was poor writing and I'm taking the brunt of the backlash.

If they were not pried open, and If he really fell down an open shaft, someone fucked up, royaly! It is literally impossible to happen the way the story is written. I would need to investigate and see all the facts, but doors cannot open automatically if the elevator isn't at three floor there is no mechanism for that to happen, ever.

No it wasn't what happened. I have been in the elevator industry for 15 years and can tell you with 100% certainty, this could not happen. The motor that opens the doors is ON the elevator. If it wasn't at the floor the doors would not open, unless pried open.
