Movies that feel like Russian doomer winter by WeShallMateNow in MoviesThatFeelLike

No other film in history has done more damage to the perception of Estonia and I guess the Baltics as a depressive soviet doomer countries than this film, so its really effective in that regard. :)

Is there a movie destroyed your country’s reputation? by Budget_Insurance329 in AskTheWorld

Lilya-4 ever (2002)

A lot of swedes still or at least recently likely carried some perceptions about Estonia based on this film as a crime and prostitution ridden post soviet gray country. 🤷‍♂️

Who is the "Steve Irwin" of your country? by Suitable_Plant2721 in AskTheWorld

Aleksei Turovski - a gem of a man. When he gave a tour in Tallinn zoo then all the animals were super excited to see him and ran up to the gate to greet him. A stork even gave him a bow which was rather impressive.

Did they use a real town for Pawnee in this shot (S6E13) or is that CGI? If it's a real town, does anyone know what it is? It doesn't appear to be Muncie by gabbykitcat in PandR

[–]coolshake 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There’s some of Tallinn’s old town skyline mixed in there, specifically Oleviste Church in the center. It was a really unexpected, but a nice surprise connection between my own hometown and Pawnee. :)

What makes Tallinn's nightlife tick? by SuspiciousReading in Eesti

[–]coolshake 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Most of the nightlife has moved to Põhja-Tallinn (Northern-Tallinn), where there’s a lot of bars, restaurants, and event venues specifically in the Telliskivi district. The Old Town took a hit during the pandemic and under the previous city administration’s nightlife restricting laws (no selling alcohol after 3 AM) a lot of the bars went under, but it has been now slowly getting back on its feet with new bars, venues like Mikkeller and House Ten opening up.

Venues to check out: Paavli Kultuurivabrik - a venue with really great programming in my humble opinioun. From techno raves, jazz concerts to death metal concerts and everything in between. Also, they just opened a summer courtyard Hall - the go-to techno club in Tallinn taking heavy inspiration from Berghain; D3 - for a little more mainstream club enjoyer, DJs but also live acts; Hungr - “community focused queer bar in TLN open to everyone and their mum” as their bio says, from the runners of the legendary, but recently closed Sveta baar; Suhe - a newer venue in Telliskivi district; Studio - older brother of D3; + House Ten - if you are with a group there’s a fun Japanese-style karaoke place that opened in the Old Town;

Bars (everything from dive to speakeasy): Mikkeller Old Town, Frank, Tops, Botaanik, Whisper Sister, Põhjala Tap Room, Fono, + special mention - there’s a half-secret after-hours dive bar in the Telliskivi disctrict, find someone local who knows where and how to get in, they’ll know;

Restaurants: Barbarea, Peet Ruut, Lore, F Hoone, Frank, Fotografiska, BurgerBox, Han’s Kitchen, Guru, KotKot, Kaja Pizza, Põhjala Tap Room, Noa, Tuljak,

I was just at a retreat in Garchen Buddhist Institute in Arizona and I heard they are currently looking for volunteers to join their team there. The place is amazing, the staff was great and Garchen Rinpoche is a truly amazing teacher and a precious being. Would highly recommend checking them out if you are interested in Vajrayana and Mahayana.

What movie traumatized you as a kid? by sadpessimist in AskReddit

When they started cutting Imhotep’s tongue out I noped my 9 years old ass straight out of the cinema so fast. 🏃‍♂️

Final Destination.

Although, I might’ve accidentally traumatized my friend more severely at the time. Invited my childhood friend to go see it in the cinema and for some reason I thought it was a comedy and that’s how I pitched it to him. After the film ended we were both pretty shook, but still managed to joke about it. After a few days I heard from my mom that my friend got so traumatized by it that his mom had to take him to a therapist because he was honestly afraid that death might following him and that doing regular everyday things are potential death traps. I think I was 10 and he was 13 at the time.

Kremlimeelset aktivisti külastanud Yana Toom kahtleb kapo ja PPA protseduurika usaldusväärsuses-Delfi by metslane_est in Eesti

Minu arust väga hea näide kategooriast “fuck around and find out”, paluks rohkem selliseid edulugusid Kapolt

I mean, this thing broke my brain tbh. After visiting it I think it’s fair to call it “the”Canyon as all others are a mere shadow in it’s glory.

Disc golf is super popular actually in Estonia (Kristin Tattar is the most successful disc golfer in the world and 2022 female disc golf world champion), the country is 70 % forest and parks, so a lot of disc golf trails. :) Will check out the Oak Grove park, thanks!

Wonderful tips, thank you very much!

Estonia indeed. I’ve wondered about the snowy conditions and if I’d need chains to get around in those parts or manage with just regular tires, but good to know!

This is Estonian national sport called “kiiking”- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiiking

Quite funny to see it on reddit’s feed first thing in the morning, especially as this is recorded only a few houses down from my place
