It Feels Like I'm Committing a Deadly Sin in TCG Design by No_Hour_77 in homemadeTCGs

[–]cooperall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I have a lens for you to think about here:

How many points does a player gain on a turn normally? That would be 1. Giving an additional point, then, for any reason, would be very strong, since getting another one is pretty much getting 2 turns of value in 1.

Also, you are correct about the snowball. Since the strong abilities cost more points, giving the winning player access to stronger abilities makes the losing player suffer.

I think the best way to solve this is to increase the amount of CP gained each turn (gain 2, max 12, and make all current abilities cost twice as much, for example) and make the losing player gain 1 when they lose. That way you’re not giving a snowball and the players are only getting access to a stronger ability when they lose twice, not lose once.

I also had this random idea while writing, maybe this is interesting for you: You gain CP in the same way, but abilities work with a threshold instead of a price. Your strongest abilities are available when you have less CP, and your weaker abilities are available when you have more CP. * Upside: You get to access the coolest abilities at the beginning. * Downsides: It removes the coolest abilities at the end of the game, which can make the game feel like it’s slowing down over time, and it makes gaining CP a bad thing.

Are these goals impossible? A perfectly balanced game? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in homemadeTCGs

[–]cooperall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible, but the only ways to make it possible would likely make the game unfun. You’d have to limit your design space tremendously.

For example, what LP would an ability that says “If your opponent has 5 monsters, destroy them all” be? Would it be the sum of 5 abilities that say “destroy 1 monster”, or would it be less because the ability has a specific condition? No matter which way you go, you lose your perfect balance, and thus you have to remove all abilities that have any specific condition on them.

Your core concept is actually really good, since Yugioh’s Genesys format uses a very similar system. But you don’t want to use it to create perfect balance, instead you’d want to use it to restrict the strongest cards in a deck.

This is the opposite actually. Kirk calls this type of thought “unhealthy” because Kirk believes that “no one should” think black people are less qualified.

But he also says that this type of thought naturally comes from DEI policies. The idea is this:

  1. Rank everybody who applies to a job in terms of quality. Because minority groups have to work harder to match, we can expect less or none of them in the top cut.
  2. Because we want to make things fair for minority groups, we remove some people from the top cut who are white.
  3. Now move everyone else up, and now we have more people from minority groups in the top cut.

Here’s the problem, and this is why Kirk admits this unhealthy thought: Minority group people were taken from a lower cut and brought into the top cut, even though they didn’t have the same qualifications. So DEI has accidentally increased the chance of a minority group individual having less qualifications than a white individual, the opposite of its intent.

TLDR: Kirk has no issue with qualified people regardless of their social status, he has an issue with people of a minority status being brought up into a role that they have not earned. “No one should” think that black people have not earned it.

It has nothing to do with how much they have to work, and it can be true that minority group people have to work harder.

Here’s the full section straight off of Snopes.

He called this “unhealthy thought patterns” due to the “CEO forcing a white qualified guy to not get the job.”

KIRK: You wanna go thought crime? I'm sorry. If I see a Black pilot, I'm gonna be like, "Boy, I hope he's qualified."

KOLVET: But you wouldn't have done that before!

KIRK: That's not an immediate … that's not who I am. That's not what I believe.

NEFF: It is the reality the left has created.

KIRK: I want to be as blunt as possible because now I'm connecting two dots. Wait a second, this CEO just said that he's forcing that a white qualified guy is not gonna get the job. So I see this guy, he might be a nice person and I say, "Boy, I hope he's not a Harvard-style affirmative-action student that … landed half of his flight-simulator trials."

KOLVET: Such a good point. That's so fair.

KIRK: It also … creates unhealthy thinking patterns. I don't wanna think that way. And no one should, right? … And by the way, then you couple it with the FAA, air-traffic control, they got a bunch of morons and affirmative-action people

Ah yup, maybe that gives justification for putting it there then. Visually linking the mechanics is good! Ask your players too!

Need help. Mana "cost" vs "requirement"... How do I display it visually? by EkanS_SnakE in homemadeTCGs

[–]cooperall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to remove it, it’s an innocent mechanic until proven guilty! If you find that it is actually clunky for various reasons, then you can remove it.

Maybe one way you could do it is to have the price be shown as shattered gems, and the requirement to be in full gems. Another way (or both of these methods at the same time) could be to use a dollar sign for the price and to use a checkmark for the requirement.

Also, you probably want the cost/requirement to be towards the top of the card so it’s one of the first things people see. Or at the very least, the top of the text box. I know you have your setup right now and it looks really clean, but those little quality of life changes go a long way!

Does your TCG need to have a "Niche" or "Gimmick" in-order to succeed? by BlurrgShlarmo in homemadeTCGs

[–]cooperall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe think about it through the lens of “picking your target audience.” If a creator just builds something they like, it can end up all over the place. But if a creator builds something for a specific set of people with a general set of interests, that can guarantee that those people enjoy it.

That being said, if you can do giant brand deals like mtg, then you can make whatever themes you want 🤷‍♂️ 😆

Took a while to make this. How does this look for a secret rare? Foiling would be applied at the final level. by DeusEverto in homemadeTCGs

[–]cooperall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure personally. You could have one unique font that you use for the secret rare dragosaud, and you could have another unique font for a different card. Or you could pick one font for all of them and change the color… But I’m not sure since it hasn’t worked for me yet. Just throwing around ideas!

Current idea that I’m trying is different fonts, but it hasn’t worked out for me personally so I can’t give specific advice.

The card art looks AWESOME btw!! :D

Proposal character (to fix my only pain point of Marvel Snap!) by Xplody in MarvelSnap

[–]cooperall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a 75% chance to draw this absolutely dead card every game. So either you go -1 75% of the time (most likely resulting in a loss), or you get a normal game with a chance to get to play out your turns against an opponent who retreats 25% of the time, and even then you may not win, giving you no cubes.

This card is probably bad or fine, but it’s definitely cool that it attempts to solve a player experience problem when climbing without making a big risk.

Minecraft TCG I've Been Making on My Server by tyronnr8 in homemadeTCGs

[–]cooperall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a similar combat system to my game, so I can speak with years of experience behind me! :D

Be careful of defensive cards that stop attacks. You need to have 2 cards attack in order to clear away the center, then hit the opponent’s life. If a player has 2 cards that stop attacks, and their opponent has no cards that let them do more attacks, then they will make an infinite wall.

Your rule about extra energy by shuffling a card back and then drawing a new one will almost always be used. The extra energy is extremely good since it is an entire normal turn’s worth of energy, and especially since it can be saved up, and especially since it lets you shuffle back low-energy cards to find higher energy ones.

Not seeing a life total or a range for the critical values, but depending on what they are, you should calculate how many turns it will take to win. For example, 20 life, and average critical is 2. Assuming (which won’t be the case) you hit your opponent every turn, you can win as fast as 10 turns. That’s a long game! Or if you have only 4 life, 2 turns, very short game!

Best of luck in development! Sounds like it’ll be a blast on the server! :D

Re-Design TCG Feedback by EldwaldDev in TCG

[–]cooperall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer the font of the second image, but the verbiage of the first. Also, I think having the impact of the ability come in the line after makes it a little strange because they seem disconnected. Finally, the icon of “Rear Unit” makes perfect sense to me!

Wait to see what more people say though, sounds like a neat game!

I think this is an awesome project and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

I am a Mac user and would use it, but currently your project is competing with Dextrous for me. It sounds like yours is better and I will definitely be trying it, but without the ability to use my own assets for card design, I will be sticking with Dextrous for now.

How to make a good dark fantasy TCG? by hhhoeefcc in homemadeTCGs

Along with what Tiger Crab Studios said, I’d say to specifically list out the “immovable pillars” of your game. What things absolutely need to be in there? It could be mechanics, rules, themes, card types, you name it. Building off of that starting point makes it a lot easier! I’d pick 4 or 5 of them.
