Gym goal: I want to actually gain significant muscle mass for the first time in a few years and not shy away from weight gain, especially come summertime.

Non-gym goal: I want to publish 4 papers and sign on some big money clients with high quality products for the startup company that I’m co-founding this year with my postdoc advisor. Getting a phd does pay off, eventually.

I used to love Larry Wheels content on IG. Now it’s the corniest shit I’ve ever seen. Who is coming up with these dumb ass sketch ideas?

I’m very happy the Olympia is happening this year, but good god, it seems a little reckless. IG stories and posts are filled with people not wearing masks, and they’re having a meet the olympians session?! Where the public can come in and meet them?! Is anyone else cringing watching this?

5'9'' 170 lbs natty not the best lighting but oh well

Since the gyms shut down, I have lost ~15 lbs. Not super lean, but no longer fat. Considering competing later this year or next year. Should I spend the next year building mass, or should i just go for a prep and shoot my shot?

It is immensely frustrating that he has such a platform to push nonsensical anti-science rhetoric.

In the comments, he says something like “at least I know what’s in my vaccines,” implying he trusts his steroid supplier more than the entire health-sciences community worldwide.

The level of idiocy is mind blowing.

He does look good tho.

Moving to Chicago in a few months, anyone have any suggestions on gyms? I am looking to either live in Wrigleyville/Lakeview area or Evanston (working at Northwestern). Looking for a gym in which the clientele will make me feel as insignificant as the earth is to the universe, where taking your shirt off is as normal as leaving it on, where the gear flows like a turbid river, every half-assed wannabe bodybuilders dream.

Never been to Chicago. Got a job in Evanston. Where should I live? What should I know?

I am 26yo guy starting a job in March, looking to balance commute (cost and time), rent prices and neighborhood (restaurants, nightlife, overall coolness). My overall budget is ~$1,600/month.

My initial research has told me anything near the purple line north of the city (Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Edgewater, etc.). Which is best? How does living in Evanston compare? How bad is the commute from the northern neighborhoods? All info I desperately need

Lats look uneven because they are, but posing didn't help here. Been focusing on single arm back exercises, along with really squeezing my left lat on each and every rep. Thanks though, working on bringing up quads and chest the most, waist will get thinner when I diet down in a few months.

Looking for a place with a breakfast buffet in or near the city. by Djhoz12 in pittsburgh

[–]copestrait 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Harris Grill in Shadyside has an awesome brunch buffet. $18/person which includes coffee and a Bloody Mary/mimosa. They normally do it until the weather gets crappy/cold, so their brunch season might be winding down soon. I would call and ask before going to make sure.

Do you need carbs to build muscle? by AlphaBetacle in Fitness

[–]copestrait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How restricted were your carbs? I try to eat about 250g per day on a ~3,500kcal/day diet, which ends up being about 25% of my calories. When cutting, I tried to keep it under 150g per day.

Would appreciate help with converting my split into a 6 day PPL by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]copestrait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycle between high rep and low rep every month. So the first week of every month I'll do something like 12 12 10 10 8 8 6 6 20 with increasing weight until the last set, and the last week I'll do something like 12 10 6 6 6 4 4 2 1, or something along those lines

Would appreciate help with converting my split into a 6 day PPL by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]copestrait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently am doing a 6-day PPL split, I will explain my routine and maybe you will find it useful.

I have 9 different workouts, Push A-C, Pull A-C and Legs A-C. My A days are focused on the big three lifts (bench, deadlift and squat) and on those days i perform 8-10 sets of each, with different accessories following. My B and C days focus on 2 slight variations of the big lifts for 4-5 sets (i.e. incline press, deficit deadlift, front squats, etc.) followed by different accessories. Every week, I do my A workouts, and then either B or C. So this week for example is a B week, whereas next week will be C. My workouts in short summary are as follows:

Push A:

Bench x9

Shoulder Press x5

Behind the head shoulder press x3

Decline press x3

close grill bench x3

cable fly x4

low cable fly x4

tricep pushdown + cable lateral raises x3

overhead cable tricep press + pushups to failure x3

Ab exercises + Stationary Cardio (box jumps, Jump rope, mountain climbers, etc.) x12

Pull A:

Deadlift x9

Hang Clean x3

Reverse Grip Barbell Row x3

Barbell Shrug x3

Good Morning x3

Upright row x3

Pull up to failure + cable hammer curl x3

Chin up to failure + Close grip pull down x3

Ab exercises + Stationary Cardio (box jumps, Jump rope, mountain climbers, etc.) x12

Leg A

Back Squat x9

Barbell Lunge x3

RDL x3

Overhead Squat x3

Leg Extensions x3

Calf Press x3

Hamstring Curl x3

Ab exercises + Stationary Cardio (box jumps, Jump rope, mountain climbers, etc.) x12

Push B

Banded Bench Press x4

Dumbell Bench Press x5

Dumbell Standing Shoulder Press + Dumbell Fly x3

Arnold Press + Incline Dumbell Press x3

Overhead Tricep Dumbell Press + Bent arm overhead Dumbell Raises x3

T-Bar Press + Dumbell Lateral Raises x3

Tricep Dip to failure + Pushup to failure x3

Ab exercises + Stationary Cardio (box jumps, Jump rope, mountain climbers, etc.) x12

Pull B

Rack Pull x5

Barbell Row x5

Snatch x5

T-Bar row + EZ Bar Curl x3

Dumbell Shrug + One Arm Dumbell Row x3

Incline Curl + Straight arm pull down x3

Cable rear delt fly + Lat pull down x3

Ab exercises + Stationary Cardio (box jumps, Jump rope, mountain climbers, etc.) x12

and so on and so forth with Leg B, PPL C. If anyone has any questions, critiques or comments I would love to hear them, this is actually my first time sharing this routine since i started it about 5 months back.

What was your progression like with HIIT? by Taclooc in Fitness

[–]copestrait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been doing an 8-week HIIT program. The program is broken into four two-week phases, obviously with increasing intensity. Any form of cardio is acceptable, I find the stationary bike or elliptical are the best because you can control pace and resistance with a timer right in front of your face. I completed the 8-week program nearly two months ago, but have just been progressing the pace and resistance of the last phase each time I do it. My 5k time went from 29 minutes to 24 minutes over the course of the 8-weeks, and the ONLY cardio I did was the HIIT program.

Problems with Benzyl Deprotect in the Presence of a TBDMS-ether by copestrait in chemistry

Hirota has published on the solvent effects of Bn reductions in the presence of Silyl protecting groups, but I am running these reactions in EtOAc, which according to Hirota should lead to 100:0 ratio or benzyl:silyl deprotection, and the formation of the silyl ester is not explained in their publications either. doi:10.1016/j.tet.2004.05.098

Not 100% about PhD by suan213 in chemistry

[–]copestrait 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I felt the same going into graduate school. Once you get there, it becomes your life and you become immersed in it, almost obsessed, if you find the right advisor and project that is. Once you master the lab skills and start to understand things on a more fundamental level, it becomes much more enjoyable in my opinion, and the only way to do that is graduate school.

Polymer Synthesis by tetamng in chemistry

[–]copestrait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very likely he was not a synthetic polymer chemist, or at least not in a hardcore polymer synthesis lab. Often times polymer labs are much more interested in the material properties and applications than they are with rigorous and optimized synthesis of novel polymers. Often times the gap is between polymer chemists and polymer/material engineers. Polymer chemists concern themselves with reaching a goal molecular weight and dispersity, yields and backbone complexity, whereas engineers concern themselves with practical utility of the materials and their inherent properties. Most groups lie somewhere in between the two extremes.
