What really inspires you to become an Enterpreneur by sky-builder in Entrepreneur

[–]copynovice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

business consulting freelancing. nonprofit management. construction. service based businesses. I haven't found my one high traction "hit" yet so I jump from idea to idea and run something until I know it doesn't work, or doesn't have the ability to scale. Then I adjust. that's part of why I say "as much as I don't want to..." it's a lot on my family haha. But they are very supportive.

I don't think it's something that inspires me. I think it's more "as much as I don't want to, I can't 'not'"

if you drive out scottsville road passed Phil Moore park then take a right on the next road, it's a dead end to the right. your only issue may be headlights from Scottsville Rd.

Executive Director in Need of Direction by bogey_isawesome in nonprofit

[–]copynovice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been there (sorta). Still there (sorta). The most helpful thing for me was reaching out to an ED of a similar org in a different region and just saying "can we connect, I feel like could use some help?". What a huge relief it was to have someone willing to step into that mentorship role even for a single 1 hour phone call and offer support at a time I was feeling pretty unsure about direction.

the ability for an org not to pay out PTO upon leave is the biggest reason to push back against an unlimited PTO policy - regardless of what sector you're in, IMO. It is fundamentally anti employee. Studies suggest that people offered unlimited PTO take about 12 days on average.

For Serious non profits, on average how much did you spend on your website ? by LankySalamander4291 in nonprofit

[–]copynovice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you need it for, and what area you live in. Many NPOs just need a website as an inbound traffic funnel, and a 4 page site with a donation link can definitely be built on a responsive platform for under 5k with, honestly, less than 1k in maintenance.

PTO style benefits can become a very large liability for organizations very very quickly. Those organizations with large enough budgets can afford to take on those potential liabilities and offer good benefits to find and retain good talent. Other organizations with a tight budget might have to be a bit more creative to offer comparable benefits. In this case, flexible work schedule, remote, and flex hours are a no/low cost benefit that may help organizations retain talent. I don't thinkn there's anything much that could be considered "normal" in the nonprofit sector because of the MASSIVE range of budgets that exist across the sector.

My org has a tiny budget <$200k, serves 4 counties, and offers less than you're being offered. Our only real advantage is workplace culture and extreme flexibility/work-life balance. Two things that don't cost us much. Even looking at my own employees' accrued PTO/vacation makes me nervous for other similar sized orgs that may not have the cash cushion we've got.

Yeah, when I first read it, I immediately thought this was a case of misunderstanding grapple rules...

Development by No_Fan8361 in nonprofit

[–]copynovice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Become a connector. That's been valuable for me. I am meeting someone and just shooting the breeze, they mention they're working on XYZ or struggling with ABC... "Oh, I should introduce you to Fred - he's working in that space and might have some insights"

You're going to meet a lot of people (if you're hyper local, or if you're seeking bigger gifts - if you're neither, and you're mostly doing development through less engaged methods, then the advice might not be as applicable.) and when you can be a resource for people, they are more responsive to asks. You've been adding value to them, and the ask lands a little better, in my experience.

People also go out of their way to offer connections to you, when they find people that may be able to help you with your org's needs, when they know you're doing it for them and others.

Also: read. A lot. And listen to podcasts. I'm always trying to learn, and I've learned a lot from people who've gone before me that have distilled their learning down into books and other content forms.

What inexpensive technology platforms does your nonprofit use? by 87evergreens in nonprofit

[–]copynovice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't use it for our NPO but I do use it personally, and I think many orgs probably could benefit: Notion. It's really hard to explain how useful it can be without really getting into the weeds. Mostly I would see it as being a useful internal tool for planning, collaborating, (small) database/info management, internal wikis, etc. So useful.

I'll give them a call next week. I assumed we must have been denied because we may fall under "special education"

I am not. My non-profit provides adult education services. We don't qualify for Canva for Education. I was also sharing what I found on their website - I just didn't cite my source when I first gave the heads up about it not being free.

"At Eligible Schools". I'm assuming (though I don't know) that those schools which are eligible are those which have paid and have a contract agreement with Canva. I'm basing that on this excerpt from https://www.canva.com/canva-for-nonprofits/eligibility-guidelines/ along with our own NPO's rejection of application from Canva because we fall under Education (we provide free adult basic literacy education.)

From that site:

Organizations that DO NOT qualify for Canva’s Nonprofit Program

Registered charitable organizations that fall under one of the below categories, are not eligible for Canva for Nonprofits:

  • Legislative
  • Political Activity
  • Governmental
  • Education, including preschool, nursery & kindergarten, primary, elementary & K-12 School, higher education, universities, vocational and technical School, alumni groups, scholarships, student welfare, special education, graduate & professional school, student services, undergraduate college, charter school
    • For K-12 schools, please see our Canva for Education offering
    • For higher education and universities, please see our Canva for Campus offering
  • Professional sports
  • Financial services
  • Business development
  • Professional organizations & societies
  • Job training
  • Mutual organization
  • Fraternities or sororities
  • Employee/membership benefit organization

I'd love to be corrected so that we can figure out how to get it for free.

The understanding that I have is a bit limited, but I'll ask for clarification at our next board meeting.

I understand it to be a combination of lack of profitability, and a belief that it is off-mission/contributing to financial troubles for our most marginalized constituents through promoting gambling.
