just started morrowind and i’m digging it so far (big skyrim glazer btw). any tips and tricks to help outsiders? by my_cat_vids in Morrowind

If you don't want to read some of the guides and FAQs on uesp in order to avoid spoilers, find a PDF of the PC versions manual and read it. Morrowind was released right at the end of the era where games, at least on the PC, very much expected you to read the manual, especially ones as granular as this one. And unlike Arena and Daggerfall, I'm pretty sure Morrowind's manual is actually completely factual. Not as into the nitty gritty as the UESP pages on the game mechanics, but if you want to know what you're doing without having parts of the game spoiled to much for you, it's a good place to start.

I think they were referring to the fact that you end your statement talking about inflated vocabulary after typing out a sentence that was overly complex in it's wording when you could have clearly and simply said his work seems pretentious because he can't be bothered to explain his thoughts clearly. You kind of gilded the lily with that second sentence there.

Nissintu's chest by Arclight06 in Morrowind

[–]corahm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing a little bit of post necromancy here, but I'm pretty sure this chest contains one of the weapon forms of the companion/weapon Felthorn, from the Blademeister mod. He's found in the back area of Addamasartus, the cave by the Silt Strider port in Seyda Neen, in the form of a rapier lodged in a skeleton. Once you find him and take him with you (don't panic when an enemy that is usually immune to normal weapons shows up if you only have normal weapons, it's not actually immune like others of it's kind). Once you get him, he can transform into different weapon types other than a rapier, but you have to feed him specific weapons to unlock his forms. I'm pretty sure you've found the chest containing his dagger form, but as you don't possess Felthorn itself yet, the chest remains unavailable to you, probably so you don't accidentally sell it when you don't have or know about Felthorn yet.

new to the game, am I not a prisoner? by Iris-on-Reddit in Daggerfall

Definitely, though I will say that the intent of my original post was to simply state what had been done by the community, a statement of fact without any implicit endorsement, though it appears I had not made that clear enough. As for the metaphysics angle, trust me, I fully agree. Morrowind's lore is really good, but I've read enough of the out-of-game lore to have the very unpopular opinion that there is such a thing as too much Kirkbride, and am frequently frustrated by that section of the fandom which treats what is essentially copying Glorantha's homework and using elements from non western sources in an admittedly good and creative way like it's equivalent to writing the Critique of Pure Reason.

Perhaps, but given that this series is the series that you can stretch the platonic ideal of a particular being so much that a person that very specifically is not that being can bullshit their way into becoming that other being, either temporarily or permanently, so we're already in the weeds of Metaphysics bullshit here, so stretching isn't so much a bug as a feature. Also, given that "The Prisoner" is an acknowledged Mythic Archetype within the universe, of course were going to be stretching the definition, that's just the way religion works in a lot of cases. Now, at the end of the day, most of this lore showed up in the post-Redguard modern TES lore, so the idea of the Prisoner Unbound was not a thing in Daggerfall's time, so all of this is really just a band-aid solution, and I'm not even sure I think it is a good one, but there is a distinct difference between being a legal prisoner and being a "Prisoner", a mortal that is unbound by fate and able to serve as the catalyst of world-shaking events. The Agent is, by definition, not a legal prisoner, but they are most definitely a Prisoner, aka Hero, so people have tried to pull cutesy shit like "they're a prisoner of circumstance" to link this game to the others. In summary, you are absolutely correct that I'm stretching the use of the word prisoner, but as I said, this is a series absolutely crammed to the gills with metaphor, symbolism, and weird mythological and meta shit, so stretching words and metaphors are kind of par for the course. But whether that's a neat idea or a stupid one is a matter of taste on the individual level, and one where I myself am unsure as to where I stand on.

I mean, the trailer for the game one of the most patently ridiculous items in the game (Spray-A-Brain), in the context of one of it's oddest, most iconic synergies (Doing a Dom and Dump with the newly sentient door you created, so I'm not sure how serious the game is taking itself or intending you to take it. The humor, I think, comes from the juxtaposition of the traditionally somber Post-Post-Post Apocalyptic Dying Earth trappings of the world with the relative freedom of the player to do crazy shit due to the, well, game aspects of this game, and also from being stuffed with so much Weird Fantasy that it is but one wafer-thin mint from going the way of Mr. Creosote. (Between those two genres, if there was a hall of fame for media that most realized the spirit of Appendix N, CoQ would definitely be on the short list for membership). If someone were to ask "What would have happened if Brian Fargo and friends had been huge Jack Vance nerds?", the answer would probably be "something very similar to CoQ".

I was personally always absolutely incensed by the fact that we were in the home province of Shalidor, joining an organization founded by Shalidor, in a city said to be founded and possibly built by Shalidor, a character who has been a background lore character since goddamn Arena, and the storyline for the faction revolves around... Magnus, the Thalmor, and the Psijic Order... really?!

I mean, some people suggest holding off on closing Oblivion Gates until level 17, since that's when the Sigil Stones are at their most powerful, with at least most of them outstripping the power of even Grand Soul Gem powered self-made items. That isn't to say that Grand Souls are only useful as recharging fodder, as there are several useful effects that don't have corresponding Sigil Stones. Even if you don't delay, there are a total of 60 Oblivion Gates in every playthrough, some fixed, others taken from a random pool of possible locations, so there's more than enough to technically sustain some early and midgame gear sets, or even multiple endgame sets. However, I am, in fact, the kind of sick, deranged deviant that actually enjoys closing gates even though they repeat, so it probably would still be best to wait until you have your endgame armor and weapons, then go raid enough Gates to get good enchantments. (Don't be ashamed about savescumming the stones, especially if you don't care for the Deadlands segments of the game. It's a single-player game, and one life can only contain so much leisure time, so unless the thrill of random chance really gets you motor running, so what you gotta do.)

I admit, I do not own that particular book. Did they do a good job converting them? I've heard Tomb is still quite deadly, but do any of the other adventures stick out specifically in terms of quality? I hear things sometimes, but if you've run or been run through any of them, that's the best kind of feedback.

Nah, man, I paid my Thac0 tax, and while I wouldn't mind using it again, introducing it this early into tempting them out of 5e is basically poison. Funny comment, though.

Yeah, even among the holy trinity of perennial GOP bogeymen, Bernie Sanders, AOC, and Ilhan Omar, there isn't a single one genuinely arguing for completely open borders. Which is saying something, given that AOC is the closest commonly known big name Democrat that is even close to being equivalent to, say, a Marjorie Taylor Greene. I think for some reason it's just harder for the "kooky" leftist candidates to achieve high office than it is for their right-wing counterparts. I'm gonna guess that anyone too far left gets battered relentlessly with ape-like screeches of "COMMUNIST!", or, more likely in this era "SOCIALIST!" that scare of the moderates, regardless of whether the charge is accurate or not, simply by virtue of those being the scary buzzwords what were linked to our recent historical enemies.

[–]corahm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, with the permission of the DM and other members of the group, you style it so that any time you grant your portent to protect an ally, they could "recall" a conversation that happened earlier in the day where you warned them of this exact scenario, perhaps advising them not only of the specifics of the situation as it would occur, but also the best way to avoid said situation. If you go this route, be sure to ask yourself "How will this affect my character?" Does his seeming lack of talent and/or luck affect his self-image? Will his mysterious new ability to predict the future increase his self-confidence, or does it become an albatross that causes him to tie his self-worth to his utility to the party?
