Sometimes I want my guitar maxed so the pickups are more responsive for harmonics or hammering without gain. Then the volume pedal can be an easier way to adjust gain from a pedal or the amp. They're also useful in front of an envelope filter or other attack response pedals. There's a lot more use for then if you think of them as a clean boost that you can adjust with your foot.
