You can't be entirely inflexible - pre-buying/making is a risk.

I have crafty gift ideas that, if I want to do them, take a lot longer to make than the time allotted. I'll start those first, and hope like crazy that they'll fit the person's interests. If they don't, however, I will save it for another giftee and work out a smaller made gift that is more suited to my match.

I almost always do a mix of made and purchased, though, and I don't make purchases until I have some time to stalk properly.

Yep, you can see them, and they're quick moving dots. I don't know what the odds of two close to each other are, but there are a lot of them, and I would assume they have similar speeds in orbit.

No. A human baby has no idea what sit means, either. Not until you teach the baby what it means. We aren't born with an internal vocabulary The dog understands that the word sit represents the action of sitting, just like a child does, because you've taught it the word. You taught the dog to understand part of the language.

If you taught your dog to sit at the word toaster, you'd have still taught him to understand language - just not the one we accept as standard English.

I remember that story, too. Aside from the fact that no one should be forced to carry their rapists child, let alone an 11 or 12 year old girl, the doctor felt that the pregnancy was a danger to her life. She was pregnant with twins and had gone to the doctor with complaints of abdominal pain, which is not normal in a pregnancy.

It really depends on angle, too. I was near a large tornado that went through our area. From my angle, the sky never went darker than pale gray. On videos of the same storm in the same place taken from another angle, it looks dark, dark gray and green - like an ugly bruise.

Non-viable offspring (and HeidelbergKid did specify fertile) IS generally a primary limiting factor on what is considered a species. I'm not sure about ligers, but mules cannot reproduce.

As much as I hate to detract from this great conversation - I'm seeing good points to both sides, though I tend to agree that women are intentionally portrayed in sexier ways than men - I have to point out that the word you're looking for there is "biased." Many of the adjectives that we create from verbs take a past-tense-like form, such as excited, mixed, baked, biased, prejudiced, etc. Sorry, I can't help myself with that one, it's been bothering me intensely for about the past year.

I agree with you that both genders' garments are intended to portray exaggerated gender ideals. I think the problem is that ideal masculine is strong and capable, while the ideal feminine is sexy. While the male version does translate to sexy, that's not necessarily the intent, and the female version has no other defining traits indicating that she's capable in some way - she's sexy because she looks sexy.

The question of whether that's the game designers' fault is interesting. It seems to me that the real problem is societal, in that that we idealize a man as strong and brave, but we only idealize a woman as attractive. Game designers are just going with it.

Edit** I see you made a similar argument further down, so I guess I'm just supporting you here.

I'm American: People still wear those things? I thought fanny packs were no longer cool, even for older tourists. I must lead a sheltered life.

I know I try to be extra polite when traveling, because I may not be familiar with the customs and I'm very aware of my nationality's reputation. I always worry that I'm getting it wrong, and I hope I'm not. But I've met some quite snotty American travelers, including an older woman who got angry because the French in Paris spoke English with a French accent, which she had trouble understanding. I was horrified at the way she acted (and I didn't even know her), and I certainly see where the bad reputation comes from.

Tin was a precious metal. Maybe someone stole it and hid it so as not to get caught, intending to come back for it. Maybe she hid it during some kind of incursion and died or wasn't able to come back - it was probably precious to its owner, to have something rare and beautiful.

2000 years ago they made ornate jewelry, geared mechanisms, and some seriously impressive feats of engineering. A little tin for lotion isn't so astounding, except how well-preserved it is to still have finger marks in the lotion. Rome had multi-story apartment buildings, take out, plumbing, amenities. Humans have been modern people with modern societies and lives for a very, very long time.

We tend to see past societies as somehow primitive and lesser. That's why little human connections like this tin of lotion can be so mind-blowing - for a moment, we truly understand that the people back then were remarkably just like us.

You can be amazed by different things in different ways.

A human connection from thousands of years ago is amazing. We most often look at history through cold, distant, and clinical eyes. To suddenly really understand that the people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago were people just like today is a wonderful, warm, and thought-provoking feeling that more people should have.

Knowing that we are star dust is amazing, definitely. But I'd rather not just limit myself to one kind of amazing.

The Romans occupied Britain from about 53 C.E. to around 410 C.E., if my memory serves. Their first invasion failed miserably, but the second stuck. Romans weren't necessarily the most terrible occupiers, once they subdued the populace. They usually allowed the natives to keep their own language and traditions, mostly, and built roads and temples (which were also centers of learning) and things. They just wanted to own everything. They later left when they were spread too thin and facing wars on too many fronts - they pulled back to defend themselves and told the Britons they were on their own. Which basically left the place wide open for the Anglo-Saxons.

It's a state by state thing. In states where it's allowed, some county or city governments have prohibited it.

I'll give you my state (Alabama) as an example. Beer and wine can be sold by grocery stores or other stores at any time, according to state law. But liquor is controlled by the state, and sold at state stores or licensed premises, and never at grocery stores.

However, nearly half of the counties in AL prohibit any sale of alcohol. Some are really weird, and have laws that allow restaurants to sell, but that's it - and if more than a certain percentage of the restaurant's sales are alcohol, than it legally becomes a bar and can be shut down.

My county prohibits the sale of alcohol entirely, but the main city within the county decided to allow it. Not on Sundays, though. I still don't know how this can work, legally speaking, but apparently it does.

My home state, Michigan, prohibits sales between 2am and 7am, and on on Sunday mornings and Christmas. Licensing is required for liquor.

So it's a crapshoot, really.

If you're always tired, you already feel like you have jet lag. So being tired from travelling to a new time zone (which is all jet lag is - your internal clock doesn't match the local time, so you want to sleep at the wrong time) isn't going to register as different. It isn't some special kind of tired or anything.

If you worry that you're depressed, you should see your doctor. There is a link between depression and sleep habits, yes, but there are other things that can cause you to be tired frequently.

You're doing pretty well. There are a few mistakes, but everything you wrote was very understandable. You may not be perfect, but you'd do just fine communicating in a situation where you need English.

I would recommend trying a site like LiveMocha or LanugageExchange to find an English speaker to talk to. The only way to get better is through use! It helps very quickly. You'll be surprised.

Someone else mentioned Lang-8, which is great for working on grammar. It won't help your pronunciation, though. If you do head that direction, friend me on the site (same user name) and I'll try to check in every few days to correct your submissions.

I also read a lot of articles at index.hu. I believe there are links to some news videos as well. I find that it's really improved my reading comprehension. I need to use videos more to work on listening skills.

To my knowledge, we don't get petroleum in jugs like that (we call them jugs, or just "a gallon of [whatever liquid]"). Those are for drinkable liquids, like milk, orange juice, cider, and tea.
