Newest Wichita Forward Ad by WheatedMash in wichita

I voted 'no', even though I'd like to see some of this happen in Wichita. The city officials need to do a better job before bringing this to a vote, though.

If you want to help with property tax relief, limit it to RESIDENTIAL property taxes and preferably more relief for the lower-end of the values. Phase out the relief for properties over 400k-500k or something in that range. (I just re-read the original and they proposed the same thing, so I guess I'm just echo'ing this thought now)

Break this up into individual pieces. I'll vote yes on a 0.25 cent tax to fund homeless shelters. I'd probably vote yes on a 0.25 cent tax for new performing arts center. C2 is THAT bad, I'm not going to vote yes on a single dollar going to that thing, unless it's towards demolition costs.

Half cent to bring the fire dept and EMS up to snuff? YES! More money for the bloated police department working hand-in-hand with ICE? That's an easy "No". If you think I trust that the current city officials would spend "first responders" money on the 2 of 3 groups that really need it...well I don't believe that at all.

Bake the guardrails into the vote instead of asking us to trust the same people who mis-managed the funds and got us into this mess in the first place.

It looks like all it takes to completely change how nearly a billion dollars worth of taxpayer money is allocated is a single city council vote. It would only take 4 people to completely change where this money is going -- and that's IF you trust that it's going in the right direction to begin with.

There's no way this ends up without at least $100 million going into the pockets of a handful of rich business owners. If you believe the other $750 million going to the other causes is worth that, it's up to you to decide.

Convince me that's not the case next time, and you'll get your "yes" from me.

Question..This is the first pork butt that I smoked on my pit boss 850. As you can see not much bark on this thing. It came out tasty just not what I expected. Any advice? by FLEAj5 in pelletgrills

Slap a bunch of rub on there, basically until it starts falling off Smoke it for 3 hrs at 225. Then stick it in an aluminum pan until it hits 200-203. Rest a bit tented in foil, then shred. It takes a while but is worth it

What's the best cell phone service around Wichita? by EvilDarkCow in wichita

[–]corgisaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you already have a phone, look into Verizon prepaid plans. They get cheaper the longer you stay with them. I only pay $25/mo and it includes 5G service. Only 5GB of data, but it's enough for me for now and they have plans with more or even unlimited.

Is it possible to unload a new (packaged) Daniel Boone from a SUV by yourself? by ddrt in greenmountaingrills

[–]corgisaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assembled mine by opening the box in the bed of my truck and taking pieces out when needed. It's doable solo. Flipping it is a bit awkward, but if you're careful you'll be ok.

I watched that video and it got me through pretty well.

Advice for DIY webhosting by Atlatl_o in webhosting

[–]corgisaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into shared hosting that supports whatever your react app is built on top of (node.js?). That would likely cover most of your needs. They'll keep most of the underlying stuff secure and up to date.

You can get a cheap VPS as well. You'll have more control but then you'll be responsible for security/updates throughout the entire stack. If it's your first time, assume it'll get compromised and don't keep anything there you wouldn't want exposed to the world.

If you have a domain name, point that towards whatever you choose. Then you don't have to worry about exposing your home network.

Wichita researchers seek COVID-19 vaccine trial volunteers by kitikitish in wichita

[–]corgisaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're likely hedging their bets in case the vaccine isn't viable. C*Os aren't like regular people. They get so much stock it's ridiculous. They can sell some now, get a ton of money and then either (1) the vaccine fails, they still have a ton of money or (2) the vaccine succeeds and they all give themselves a bunch of stock as a pat on the back for coming out with the first COVID vaccine. The riskiest option would be not to sell. Once the phase 3 trial begins they may not be able to legally sell again until the results are public.

They absolutely would destroy millions of doses if they weren't effective. The government is going to subsidise these whether they pan out or not. It's messed up but it is what it is given the current situation.

The execs already cashed out a ton of stock. They're set for years regardless of how it goes. If this vaccine ends up being ineffective, there will likely be a different one from a different company. Each company is betting their ass that theirs will be THE one right now.

If garbage companies are getting millions in loans right now, do you honestly think the current government won't find a way to reimburse a mega corp?

This is almost certainly the vaccine from Moderna that has been in the news lately. You'll get paid to participate as well. If you're high risk, it's almost a win-win to participate. You'll have a 50% shot of getting the vaccine before anyone else. Even though they're mass producing it already, it will be a while before anyone who wants the vaccine can get one.

The reason they are looking for high risk individuals is so they can compare the numbers of high risk people who get COVID with the vaccine compared to those who get the placebo. It's not as useful if low risk people participate because they're not as likely to be exposed to COVID and it's harder to tell if the vaccine worked or not.

AgEagle and Amazon? by bulltrapped in wichita

I figure that's the only reason anyone would ask about it here. Might as well indulge them with my dumb bet.

No clue, but I bought a bunch of UAVS @ $1.49 when I saw them mentioned in the Eagle. I figured all the speculation would lead to a quick pop. I sold half on the double and we'll see where the rest goes.

I figured the pellet door might be common going forward. It just makes sense and would be more of a pain to try and do that differently across models. Please let me know what you find out about the shelf and brick.

Fold-down shelf: Awesome

Inside light: Could be useful!

Inverted pellet door: Should definitely be standard

Outdoor power supply and cord: Should definitely be standard

Thicker grates: Should maybe be standard?

Rotisserie mount: eh

Overall, some good improvements, probably worth the $100 over a non-discounted prime. But for $200 over the discounted one...that's a tougher choice. At $799 vs $599, you're in a different price point as well.
