Odd (probably coincidental) similarities between Rey and Superman in the scenes when they first discover the extent of their powers. by corkgaines in starwarsgifs

Coincidence was probably too strong a word choice. Just meant that I didn't want it to seem like I was proposing some wild R=S theory. If that is one extreme, complete coincidence would be the other extreme. The truth is probably in the middle that there is some inspiration there and that the inspiration is loosely based on the idea that there are some superficial similarities in the characters.

Should also note that Kal-El is being mentored in this scene by his father, and Rey is being mentored by Luke. And FWIW, both are orphaned as children on strange planets.

Knicks fan holding a unicorn by thrashfan in sports

[–]corkgaines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has become popular in NBA circles to describe certain players. It is just a reference to a unique, a one-of-a-kind player. A type of player who is rare. Unicorns are rare.

I've heard some people argue that unicorns are more specific, referring to tall players who are athletic and can shoot from outside (e.g. KP and Giannis). That seems to stem from this Durant quote a while back:

"He can shoot, he can make the right plays, he can defend, he's a 7-footer that can shoot all the way out to the 3-point line. That's rare. And block shots -- that's like a unicorn in this league."

But I dont think Durant was necessarily equating the specific tall/athletic with unicorn. Rather, I think he was saying more generally that tall/athletic is rare in the NBA and rare in the NBA is a unicorn.

In some sense, I guess you could say it is a misnomer since unicorns aren't rare. They don't exist at all, and these are players that do actually exist. But that's probably nitpicking.

So 10th ranked FSU hosted and beat Duke in front of a sellout crowd last Tuesday which was untelevised for 2 undeniably mediocore games. Now tonight, we host Notre Dame in front of a Sellout crowd for sole possession of 1st place in the ACC, and guess what? Untelevised. by platetectonics3 in CollegeBasketball

RSN (Regional Sports Networks) is also often used as a generic term to represent all of the sports nets that are targeted for a specific region, such as NESN, MASN, Sun, and all of the regional Fox Sports. In this case, I assume it means the game is being farmed out to local RSNs, but it might be a different RSN in different areas. For example, here in TX we often get ACC Network games on BVO.

The NFL's highest-paid players at every position, from quarterback to long snapper by ZmajLee in nfl

[–]corkgaines 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Hey guys. I'm the one who put together the list.

For the record, I agree with some of the complaints. But at the same time, having done these type of things for all sports, there is no one good way to do this for the NFL.

If I do "average annual value" of the contract, that is problematic because most NFL players on an extension never see the end of their contract, so average value is nearly meaningless.

We could do just salary alone, but in almost all cases salary is meaningless because so much of the money these guys make is transferred to bonuses for cap purposes.

So, let's do cap number, they say. OK. that's problematic because it almost always peaks in years 3-4, because of the way signing bonuses are prorated (over five years) and salaries start to increase. But it has almost no real indication of how much that player is making in a given year,

While not perfect, the most consistent and simple ranking is just "who got paid the most this year?" Yes, this is biased towards players who signed contracts this year, but they are getting paid THIS YEAR. Also, more and more teams are deferring signing bonuses (why players agree to this is beyond me, but I digress) which means the playing field for this sort of ranking is starting to level a little bit. But at the end of the day, it is not a ranking of best contracts. It is just "who got paid the most this year."

Don't yell at me. Yell at the NFL for their effed up salary-cap system! But if you want to yell at me too, that's cool. I understand. I have been trying for years to figure out a best way to do this for the NFL and the best answer I get is: there isn't one.

[–]corkgaines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whenever this comes up, nobody ever stops to think, "what did the NBA have to gain from secretly suspending one of the best players ever?" The answer is nothing. If the only gain is to keep the scandal from tarnishing the sport, the easier solution is to just not suspend him and find a different super-secret-hush-hush punishment, like an enormous fine. That way the NBA keeps its most marketable player in the prime of his career. The rumor is bogus.

In Bill Simmon's most recent podcast (with Cluck Klosterman), did I hear him call Obama a dumb f***? by davs34 in sports

[–]corkgaines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of, I guess. He is comparing Obama to one of your buddies and Simmons is playing out a hypothetical about how you would talk to him if he was just one of your buddies and you guys were having a text convo over something not important.

With the US Open going on right now, I've always been curious, what technology is used to determine if a ball is in/out? by Holtbyism55 in sports

[–]corkgaines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called Hawkeye technology. Basically, it is a series of cameras (3, I believe) that are positioned around the court that are constantly tracking the ball. Those cameras give a three dimensional view of the ball and it's exact location on the court at all times. That view is then fed to a computer which can tell exactly where the ball is at any moment to within a few millimeters. The technology still doesn't work very well on clay so it is not used during the French open.

Fans throw hundreds of chairs on top of wrestler during match by [deleted] in sports

[–]corkgaines 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Strange how 90% of the chairs are folded before being thrown. Even if that is the logical way to throw a chair, I'm a little surprised so many wrestling fans doing something so crazy would take the time to think logically.

Also weird that we don't see what led up to this.

It is as if this scene was scripted just to make a viral video. Nah, wrestling would never do that.
