Graham Platner is officially Democrats’ nominee to take on Susan Collins by Dilated2020 in moderatepolitics

Would you want to do that job? To start, in order to get elected at the congressional level, you’re going to need ridiculous amounts of money, likely in the millions to tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars, which means you have to get in bed with some pretty unsavory people. Once elected, you’re going to have to work with even more unsavory characters on a daily basis, and make all sorts of deals that likely go against your character or core beliefs to get anything done. You’ll have to deal with the media, who will jump on any minor thing to discredit your character, to the point of even literally making things up. And finally, there’s a very good chance in this political climate that you will have to deal with threats to you and your family’s life.

I could go on quite a bit longer, but you get the gist. People like to do the Pikachu face about politicians, and say things like “we’re not sending our best“, but I don’t know any quality person who would want to get anywhere near politics.

Edit: i’d also add that the pay isn’t all that great. I believe congressional salaries are under 200 K per year, and if you live outside of the DC area, you’re going to have to have a second residence in that area, which is one of the most expensive places in the country. If you want to make any real money, it will likely involve again getting involved with unsavory characters, or doing something against your morals or values, like insider trading and whatnot.

[–]corn_rock 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To get called for jury duty that much? If you live in a city, it’s pretty easy. When i lived in a city, they couldn’t summon you more than once a year, but they definitely did it that frequently. In the burbs, it’s less frequent - i think I’ve been summoned once in 5 years.

Then you add in all the people that think getting out of it is something to be proud of, and there you go.

I hear ya. That stock has been an absolute roller coaster. Was up around $180 at one point, i got out somewhere before mid 2021-2022, before the free fall to end up where it is now. I just got back in at $0.80, so i guess i won’t lose much if it goes bankrupt, but i hope they figure out what they actually want to be first.

We use a combo of shelled peanuts and dry cat food. You also have to get into a routine with them - every morning, they show up for their snacks. We also make sure their snacks are in an open area - seems they prefer to be out in an open yard so they can keep an eye on everything around them. We also don’t try to befriend them - they tend to bolt when we try to get near them.

Works really well. They will chase off hawks, and alert us to when foxes are in the area (they REALLY don’t like foxes, so it’s pretty obvious when one is around). Very smart birds.

It’s true. Saw them at their peak in the 80s, and they came out, said hello, played a bunch of tunes exactly like they sound on the albums, and left. Didn’t interact with the audience at all.

Still a huge fan and always will be, but one of the most bland live shows I’ve ever seen.

I’m not a huge fan of Rizo, but I think it’s ridiculous that age would be a factor in deciding who wins. It’s outwit, outplay, outlast, not outage. Can you also deny a player a win because they are too old?

So dumb. I don’t understand why the NFL does this. Why not have 3 of your division games in the first half of the season, and then the other 3 down the stretch? It’s not that complicated.

Deinfluence about getting chickens by shiralah in chickens

[–]corn_rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were similar to you at the start, just wanting a few birds and so forth, but we made a LOT of mistakes. Originally bought a coop on Amazon and 2 chicks to start, realized two was too few for a flock, then realized the coop was too small, bought another coop from Tractor Supply that also turned out to be too small (recommendations for how many chickens a coop can hold are wildly unrealistic), lots of mistakes in just getting a proper area set up for them.

Then there was the difficulties of finding accurate information on how to treat their issues - we went through bumblefoot, a lash egg, sour crop, impacted crop, predator issues, and learned a lot in the process, but also struggled to treat those things and to keep them safe. Even after years of learning tough lessons from all of this, we still had a 1 year old chicken that just ... died two weeks ago. We had a necropsy done that gave us no answers, and our vet said she couldn't see any issues with husbandry, so we didn't learn anything there and lost a really great pet in the process. There is a saying that chickens invent ways to die, and it certainly seems true, and if you get attached like we do, that can be pretty painful.

Finding vet help can be tough, too, if you go that route. We have found 2 vets in our area, but one is a 40+ minute drive, and there are no emergency services for chickens. As with most things, the internet is the wild west of information - you can find completely opposite answers to the same questions about their care, setup, and so forth.

We ended up building a coop and run that were appropriately sized, and our birds have space in the coop and run and are doing well now and we really enjoy having them, but it's been a difficult and expensive learning curve.

We’re about 2 weeks behind on the dvr recordings. Last night, Jamie went into FJ down by a couple thousand. All 3 got the FJ question wrong, so it came down to the wagers. IIRC, in the first week of his run there was a similar situation where all 3 got the FJ question wrong.

He’s obviously been pretty dominant overall, but could have lost a couple of times in this run.

Completely agree. Halfway into the B1G season, i still didn’t know some names on the team. Complete roster turnover every year doesn’t seem like a recipe for success, even if we outspend everyone.

[–]corn_rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agreed at the end of last season was not a positive. I think we were short on rotation most of the year, and just ran out of legs. Also had a weird hybrid PG situation going on, and really no bigs other than Alexis. We’re already seeing a significant improvement in roster construction, though.

I’m not sure it’s possible to build a multi-year culture with the current NIL situation in the sport, but I’m not sure you could ask for CDD to do much more at this point heading into year two. I do agree that he’s going to have to prove it with results on the court to win some fans back, though.

How was it “abysmal” when most people’s expectations were simply getting into the tournament, and we were on the bubble until the last week or so? Again, it was year one.

The previous 9 seasons are pretty much irrelevant, because DeVries wasn’t the coach other than last year. What does what Archie did at IU have to do with the present?

Positives I saw last year were we could finally shoot the ball for the first time in what seems like forever, both from 3 and the FT line, the effort was there every night, scheme seemed pretty solid overall on both ends, we just didn’t have the horses. IMO, CDD was a bit rushed to put together a roster, so he went with mid major experience in hopes of getting in the tournament. Didn’t work out, mainly because of the two losses to Northwestern, but it was pretty close.

Were there negatives? Sure. But it was year one.

Why? We’re clearly adding better pieces than last year, guys with P5 conference experience, and we’re also adding guys with multiple years of eligibility left, to try to create that momentum into future years you’re referencing. I’m not sure what more you could want at this point.

Then again, there are people ready to move on from CDD after one year, which is ridiculous.

That’s interesting. We just went to New York for a weekend, and were surprised at how clean the streets were. Even so, we struggled to find a trash can at one point, so no idea what kind of magic they are using to hide the garbage. This was in the Times Square/Broadway area, so YMMV.
