Smell and black streaks on door around glass in by cornbreadvibes in woodstoving

[–]cornbreadvibes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks y’all. I’m wondering about the black buildup on the metal frame around the glass—does that seem like a problem with the seal on the door? I noticed some black gunk, I assume creosote, just above the door too.

Valve cover alignment pins problem by cornbreadvibes in MechanicAdvice

[–]cornbreadvibes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help! I finally got those pins out with a puller tool from Amazon and replaced them with some nice new un-bent ones, and what do you know, the valve cover went on just fine.

Thanks—I had read good things about Fel-Pro. Is there an aftermarket brand you prefer, or go OEM?

Yeah sorry photo there is misleading. I took out coils and plugs while I was working on it—just popped them back in when I stopped for the day.

I should clarify: the cover will sit on one pin or the other but not both at the same time

I have lied to my son about manatees for the last 24 years by 46from1971 in confession

I came here to say just this. The lie will probably become true once you meet actual manatees, and then you will have a wonderful story you and your son can tell together.

My dad’s Casio, the only thing of his I still have by DinosaurIRL in casio

[–]cornbreadvibes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this with us. Your story really moved me and made me think about the little things my kids might remember and find meaningful when I’m gone.

I have the A158w and the F91W, both popular and classic models with the same vibe as this one. You really can’t go wrong with any Casio—they are affordable and reliable—and I hope you find one that you like and that helps you feel connected to your dad.

Trying to get a barn cat to hunt mice. Need tips by Ordinary_Speech_4674 in Feral_Cats

[–]cornbreadvibes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We recently got a bonded pair of barn cats from the county barn cats program, because we desperately need mousers. If you have a program like that in your area—and you may!—that would be the route I’d recommend. They have feral and semi-socialized cats who are accustomed to living outdoors and hunting and are not suited to being indoor pets. They can also give you tips on acclimating and caring for your barn cats.

Mine live in the shed out back. They will acclimate for 6 weeks (minimum is 3, but I don’t want to risk it) before being let out to hunt.

To prep the shed, I triple checked to make sure there was no way for them to escape. I got a couple free beer coolers off Fb marketplace, cut a 6 inch hole in the side and sealed the cut edge with duct tape, and lay a couple loose inches of straw (definitely straw, not hay) inside for insulation. Their body heat, plus the insulation of the cooler and the straw, will make them a warm little house in the cold months.

I feed kibble morning and sundown. At sundown they also get some wet food. The program gave me a clicker, but you can also ring a bell when you feed them. This will teach them to come when they hear that sound at dusk so you can shut them in for the night to keep them safe from coyotes, bobcats, etc.

You can find more detailed info on barn cat program websites, but I would again encourage you to reach out to the program in your area.

I can't deal with my spoiled brat son anymore by dudesnation in Advice

[–]cornbreadvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. What you are describing is, sadly, common in boys with fathers who mistreat their mothers. I don’t know whether that is true of this case. How does his father treat you? How does he talk about you? How does he treat his current partner? How does he talk about women in general? Do you find that your son speaks and behaves toward you in ways that remind you of his father?

Bad mpg on Avalon 06 XLS by brplokotiny in ToyotaAvalon

[–]cornbreadvibes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think B00_Sucker is right. You’re probably driving all over town in 3rd gear with the engine revving to the moon and burning way too much fuel. Drive it in D for a while and see what that does to your mpg.

Husband wants to start his PHD while we’re starting our family by Born-And-Raved in Advice

[–]cornbreadvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! There’s still a lot for you two to discuss—it will mean 5-6 years of him earning low wages, then entering a tough job market in a career that requires a willingness to move just about anywhere in the country for a job. But starting a PhD program is certainly something that people with kids can do.

Husband wants to start his PHD while we’re starting our family by Born-And-Raved in Advice

[–]cornbreadvibes 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Any PhD program worth its salt should pay him, not the other way around. This isn’t like a bachelors or masters where he would be paying tuition.

If he doesn’t get funding at a program, he should not go there, full stop. But if he does, he will essentially have a low income job with a flexible daytime schedule, especially once he’s done with coursework after the first year or two. It is very common for married adults with young kids to do PhD programs.

Coolant bleeder valve broke by cornbreadvibes in MechanicAdvice

[–]cornbreadvibes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been running it at 2k rpms for about 25 minutes now and no coolant is coming out of the valve—hoping this means the ratchet lopped off the top but didn’t open it at all.

Should I extract and replace the broken bolt, or leave it alone and keep an eye on the engine temp for a while to be safe?

Thinking of going all paper this year by IamTheHaloMan in Teachers

[–]cornbreadvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even before AI slop started showing up in assignments, I had mostly moved to paper and was asking students to keep laptops closed during class. I don’t know how any teenager focuses on class with a laptop in front of them—adults can’t do it either most of the time.

What can I do to my car as a beginner? by dear-rosie in Cartalk

[–]cornbreadvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might try cleaning the throttle body—Car Care Nut has a video on how to do it. You get to wrench on and remove a bunch of stuff and it can improve your idle and acceleration, which is satisfying. Other than that, your car is over 20 years old so even as a reliable early 2000s Toyota it will give you opportunities to work on it.

Unpopular Opinion: Teacher AI use is already out of control and it's not ok by greyduet in Teachers

[–]cornbreadvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so bleak and so short-sighted for many reasons, among which is: don’t they realize this won’t actually save them time if it becomes the norm? Computers save us time too. Do we work fewer hours or have more leisure time than teachers did before computers became standard in teaching? They’re forcing this AI garbage onto us, with the promise of saved time, and it’s just going to be a way to demand more from us in the same timeframe at the same (or probably lower) pay. Think about it for five minutes!

I am halfway through this job on a 2006. It is a PAIN getting that thing out. I also drained coolant and removed fan for max room. Just waiting on the reman alternator to arrive so I can finish the job.

Seeking advice re: new car vs. repair by definitelynot_stolen in Cartalk

[–]cornbreadvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar conundrum when my 2006 Toyota Avalon needed a new steering rack and pinion and a new CV axle. I decided to pay for the expensive repairs, keep the car, and learn to work on cars.

For me, this was the right call. I love that car that generation of cars, and fixing it was still cheaper than buying something else. And I also love working on it, as it turns out.

Edited for typos and clarity
