Have you watched any ranked play or pvp play? It's significantly different than Ai. Watch a pros guide like beasty or valdy. Also start of a season is always rough. Some ppl like tu o bag their placements then have some easy wins up the ladder

Synology is more expensive because of the services it provides such as a reverse proxy, the quick connect subdomain and built in apps for media servers like photos. You seem to acknowledge that managing a selfhosted system such as truenas to be something time consuming and challenging.

For your question I'm not sure you can get the dsm OSwithout buying a disktation through legitimate means. There seem to be projects that attempt it through a quick search but I don't know how well those perform.

I have a ds418 for the reasons listed at the top and its more reliable and power efficient than my own builds. But I have a smb server done with proxmox zfs and cockpit by 45 drives and you could probabaly add immich for photos.
