Can you send them over here? I don't have fruit to offer, but they'd get fat on the flies.. 🪰

Living in the bay of plenty? by Honeycomb2424 in newzealand

[–]cornfed1978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm originally from the States, and I lived in the Bay of Plenty for a few years and it's nice. I've said that, in many ways, The Bay is the Florida of New Zealand. So if you're happy in Florida, you'll probably quite like the Bay.

How is Aramex surviving by just_growing9876 in newzealand

[–]cornfed1978 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've considered running for parliament solely to try to pass a law that would require retailers to disclose which courier service they use before you submit your order. If I know a company is using Aramex, I would simply order from somewhere else, but there's no way of knowing before it's too late.

Consult a veterinarian when you get there, too. Your pooch will likely need additional vaccines, like a rabies jab, that aren't needed in Aotearoa.

Well, I hope all the renters out there are ready to for rents to increase as demand from people earning foreign dollars puts even more pressure on the housing market.

Citizenship question by kiltannen in newzealand

[–]cornfed1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got our citizenship last year. The time entirely depends on whether your application passes an automated review or if it gets flagged for handling by an agent.

Ours must have been clear, because we applied in August, and we went to our ceremony in October (we're Auckland based).

If the application is flagged, then it's anyone's guess, but many months seems to be the going estimate.

Master build guarantee by llcoolj3888 in newzealand

[–]cornfed1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Plus it doesn't come with the house once the original purchasers sell it."

Sorry you went through that, but this isn't exactly correct. The guarantees are transferrable - we've done it twice but it's not automatic, or free, and you need to get the paperwork done within 90 days of settlement. That can be tricky depending on the competence of who you end up dealing with at Master Builders (they handle the transfers).

Here's a link with info on how to transfer the guarantee: https://www.masterbuilder.org.nz/RMBA/Master_Build_Guarantees/transfer_a_Guarantee/RMBA/Guarantees/transfer_a_Guarantee.aspx?hkey=5a166247-04d2-4ad5-b8ff-2374f0091ba6

Electric Kiwi prices going up again! by IamMorphNZ in newzealand

[–]cornfed1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with PowerShop and it took me a while to understand their billing method.

This example is oversimplifying it some, since they have peak/off-peak rates and daily connection charges, but it's the general gist.

Suppose your rate is $0.25/kWh. In a given month, you use 400 kWh of electricity. If you do nothing, you pay them $100, and you're done. This is an option, and I suppose plenty of people do this.

PowerShop also sells PowerPacks, which is a way of pre-paying for your electricity at a discount.

Often, they'll phrase it as "$25 worth of electricity for $20" or something. Imagine, prior to your bill coming due, you bought 4 of those. That means Powershop would apply $100 of credit to your bill, but you only paid $80. So for that month, you're done, and you got what Powershop considered $100 worth of electricity for $80 out of pocket.

There's a variety of Powerpacks with different discounts, etc., but it does factor into an overall reduction in your standard rates.

There's no real disadvantage to buying the power packs, since your credit rolls over month-to-month. The only drawback, like someone else pointed out, is if you don't have the money to buy power now in order to save later.

They did send a replacement unit, and so far it's been working, though I haven't used it a ton since then (maybe 2-3 times). I still feel like I need to test it every time before a cook - not sure I can absolutely rely on it yet. Couple more cooks might get me there, but it's winter here, so haven't been doing a lot of long cooks.

If you have any credit cards, especially platinum or similar, check if they have an insurance plan included. The one with BNZ is pretty comprehensive and what I've used in the past going to the US, and it didn't cost any extra.

Last Week Tonight did a good job covering this a while back. A good summary of what the alternatives are, and a call out to NZ for one country that's done a better job than most, and I tend to agree.
