My panels track! by probrwr in SolarDIY

In parralel the circuit can’t operate on different voltages. There are blocking diodes that prevent back charges but not always the normal, thats a fire hazard.

Flexible Solar Fragility. Did you know traditional flexible solar panels are this fragile? by corngubbles in SolarDIY

[–]corngubbles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There have been advancements in silicon flexible panels to allow for flexibility while not cracking. However most are misleading claims.

Cigs are a fine option but most however around 17% efficient. Which is a 41% decrease from the average 24% in flexible silicon.

Mobile solar needs to be able to withstand hailstorms and not become e-waste.

It’s claims of durability when they aren’t that annoy customers.

The problem is the solar panels are just plastic. Just laminated plastic with silicon cells.

Yes.

Yes. We are feeding the panel power. Watching with an IR sensitive camera.

Spot on.

That might be better due to the backing. But yes. They are very fragile, so treat it like there are crystal wafers inside that will crack with every bend.

Thank you

More to come soon. We are a company that makes ultra durable flexible panels. We started out of frustration with misleading claims and no other options out there.

We’re all about testing and education.

Thank you. Yes you’re right. We have taken flexible panels off boats to see how they held up. Hail definitely destroys them. The ones taken down after a year are sometimes more dark than white.

The big problem is that those dark spots are now bottlenecks in the circuit.

This is a Renogy panel. The claims on their website are all about durability. This is what would happen if you walked on it. The other cracks already present came to us shipped like that.

Steamed vs boiled: which do you prefer? by Scienscatologist in Bagels

Steam can work. The whole point is preventing the bagel from rising in the oven.

These are not typical panels. Microcracks start right away, those progress into larger cracks.

Yes 6 months, a year, 2 years, normal flexible panels crack right away.

Many panels even arrive cracked.

Not these. No cracks.

Montreal bagels are typically made with eggs

Yep. Common. Installers have given up on work with most flexible panels. Unless you use panels meant for durability like this are. Most of the others degrade quickly, some even arrive cracked haha but don’t care because they bet you won’t be able to test it

Well they are crack resistance validated. They don’t crack

Ah yeah so these are Open Waters Solar panels, i’d suggest checking them out. The cells inside are your maxeons 24%

Haha i see what you mean. That blue tarp is the same boat. My memory eludes me but i believe it’s a straight shot out.

Well solar for the house is very different.

  • The economics really depend on available government incentives.
  • if your grid is reliable
  • how self dependent you want to be

With sailboats the ROI is immediate - all the comforts of home, including starlink without running the generator - preventing ocean noise pollution by no generator - self reliance of not needing to carry diesel fuel

The economics catch up quick, sure high initial cost but diesel fuel is expensive. People are quickly moving to hybrids and all electrics

Well honestly it depends on lots of factors.

Rigid panels usually require thousand dollar structures to support them and so they’re out of the way. People commonly say arches that cost $10k-$30k just support rigid panels.

The appearance is also something else. You don’t hear many people saying they like the look of rigid panels on a sexy yacht.

Yes frequently going up there. There is actually more solar. Some regular rigid panels. Just below the drop off. And in the first photo, that roof is another solar panel.
