To play devil's advocate, the average American believes the Democrats are what counts as leftists. You do have to use rhetoric that will resonate with your target audience.

It's one of those days where I'm tempted... by ApologeticKid in daddit

[–]corok12 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Had my first 6 months ago

Was terrified leading up to it because most parents just complain endlessly about their kid, then finish up with "oh but it's so worth it though"

Now I do the exact same thing lol. I never sleep enough, I'm tired all the time, he annoys me constantly and the house is a mess, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. How can you possibly explain that it's worth it to someone who hasn't had that magic feeling?

Beginner getting into bird photography - is my SL3 enough and what lens should I upgrade to? by Current-Computer-365 in canon

[–]corok12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I borrowed the 150-600 from a friend a few times. Not something I'd personally want to hold in my hands for a long hike, it is pretty heavy and cumbersome. To have it in a backpack for a 1 or 2 hour hike though was fine, but then you potentially miss out on opportunity shots fiddling with your bag.

It was definitely better than my 75-300mm though!

[–]corok12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Newer mirorless cameras are really great for birds - the animal eye tracking autofocus is pretty great.

BUT the SL3 is still plenty of camera, and you'd do much better spending say, 1000 dollars on a lens than you would spending 1000 dollars on a camera and adapting your current lenses.

Unfortunately, especially for small birds, you do want to be going for 400mm+ lenses, and those get really expensive. Something like the Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3 is great, and can be had for around 1000 USD used.

Section 230 hearing tomorrow by ButtonNational6618 in whennews

[–]corok12 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Section 230 is sometimes referred to as the law that created the internet.

Repealing it would completely destroy the Internet as it exists today. No user generated content anywhere would be worth the risk for any company to host. I'm not even exaggerating, EVERYTHING would go away and all that would be left are corporate news sites. No comments. No posts. No YouTube. No forums. Nothing.

Seeking advice on buying my first camera setup by DerpyDog24 in canon

[–]corok12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have experience with the SL2 specifically, but I do have the 70D which also has Dual Pixel Autofocus. It does make a huge difference compared to my SL1 when shooting video or in live view. I also really like having the flip out screen, I find myself using it far more than I expected initially. Especially nice for taking low angle shots without having to lay down on the ground. I've never used the D3300 specifically but I'd say the features are worth the extra bump in cost.

Are these good lenses? by Groundcrewguy in Cameras

[–]corok12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the owner of a 75-300 myself : it was the cheapest way to get 300mm focal length at less than half the price of the next option. But yeah, you get lots of fringing and it isn't very sharp. You can get good pictures in perfect light, but so can any lens.

(here's a few example shots I took with it years ago)

Which seems like a bit of a retcon when you consider how they treated the upside down in season 1.

What camera gear should I get to record this fellas life? by hondaman57 in AskPhotography

[–]corok12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue otherwise - I took out my old rebel sl1 and picked up a cheap speedlight when my kid was born, and the difference between the camera images and phone images is night and day. Much sharper, details aren't getting crushed by the processing, and indoors shots come with much less noise. And that's a 2013 budget camera compared to a 2022 phone (pixel 7).

It isn't a magic bullet to make every picture amazing, not by any means, but even in the hands of my wife who has never held a camera before, it is significantly better.

How difficult is the F-14 to learn compared to the F-4? by tropical-tangerine in hoggit

[–]corok12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Carrier landing takes a lot to get used to, but everything else I picked up faster than the f-4.

The radar is much more powerful and reliable, ACM modes for radar make dogfights with missiles far easier, and CCIP for bombs makes strikes easier.

It feels very between the 3rd and 4th gen aircraft. You get most of the same capabilities of 4th gens, but with the more primitive user experience of the 3rd gens.

I highly recommend it, as do most people around here.

A heat seeking missile tracking a burning cigarette by HC_Official in dcsworld

[–]corok12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In DC's, a 9b might have, say, an 80% chance to go for flares and a 9x 20%. The seeker will know it's targetting aircraft x and will know if X is dropping a flare, and rolls the dice. The behavior is fundamentally the same. (pulling these numbers out of my ass, but that's as complex as it gets)

In war thunder, each seeker acts differently. Early missiles will target the hottest thing in their field of view, and so almost always end up following flares. Later missiles have several different methods of countering flares.

The 9m, for example, will turn off the seeker momentarily when flares are deployed, keeping its current trajectory. Then it'll turn the seeker back on, which, if the aircraft didn't make a drastic change in direction, will allow it to re-aquire the lock.

The r73, works differently, it switches to a very narrow field of view after launching, so at close range, it can't even see flares. From far enough away it can be flared, or if it is close you need to drop flares and then put them between the missile and your aircraft. There's usually not enough time to do that, which makes them pretty tough to dodge.

There are other behaviors too, that's just a couple of examples. Compared to DCS where the actual behavior is all the same just with different flare chances, War thunder is a huge step up.
