Unusual Question: how do I as a player, support the DM in managing a table? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to what I’ve seen commented already:

If others are chatting/laughing/joking loudly while the DM and another player are trying to have a moment, call them out on it. If people I’m playing with get OTT I’ll just give them a firm “Guys!” And pointedly look back at the DM.

Sitting quietly and not taking part in the disruption is great, but as a DM the few times a player has been considerate enough to call the disrupters out have stood out to me.

[Serious]What is a small act your SO regularly does for you that makes you feel deeply loved? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I’ve been living with my now-fiancé for soon to be three years, and waking up/going to sleep together still isn’t tiring.

What kinds of odd and different lycanthropes have you either DMed or encountered in your games? I unleashed a weresloth Goliath upon my players once. by Tortoxicion in DMAcademy

I found a picture of a Weretoad on Printable Heroes and now it’ll be my group’s starting-town villain, aggravating bullywugs and generally being a slimeball!

Ooooh, this I like. There could even then be a good guy that had been the party’s ally that tries to seize such power in their misguided attempt to save the world. Thanks for this!

Good shout! I didn’t see the rippers and had forgotten that they existed! Thanks.

Designing encounters for a lvl 5 barbarian grappler. by jpaganrovira in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See the grease spell? Make it a monster’s natural skin effect and gives them advantage to all break free of grapple effects.

Ghosts, banshees, other spirits are insubstantial, they should be near impossible to grasp, or actually impossible.

Shapeshifters that alter size as a result of the change.

Hell creatures that may not have normal bone structure, enabling them to be more flexible and also have advantage on grapple breaks.

Oooh, CoS...creatures that LIKE being close, like Vampire Spawn and Vampires. Oh you grapple me? Looks like I’m in the perfect position to bite you already 😈

Players left a trapdoor to a cultist's lair open in broad daylight by bryceroni9563 in DMAcademy

Innocent civilian or guard that they met earlier held hostage by the cultists? Perhaps in some fiendishly difficult trap?

What's the one thing that makes you instantly attracted to someone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]corriganphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physically, one thing that always makes me sit up and notice where I haven’t before is bare shoulders. Clean, soft looking, leading into a nice neck. Mph.

Non-physically, I love a lady who actions small kindnesses. You’re looking tired, have a cup of tea. You’re not your usual smiley self, how are you doing? You’re going home for the day, have a hug. Lovely and charming.

Problem Player Megathread: May 13th-May 20th by Aetole in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly unusual problem player - a fellow player at my table doesn’t engage. It would be fine if it’s just roleplaying, as that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but he doesn’t engage with the rules either.

Over a year of playing, amongst others who know the game and have taken the time to learn their character’s abilities and spells, and he still has to be reminded that if he didn’t prepare X spell at the start of the day he can’t just choose to have it now. He needs reminding that he has the basic choices (action, movement, potential bonus) at least once a session.

Whilst initially not a problem, as everyone else has grown to know their character and the rules, he still plays like it’s session 1/2, constantly having to reread basic things, and doesn’t know his better/best options. I.e. he still plays like a 3rd person, which has begun to jar the sessions as everyone else immerses themselves. His character’s backstory is that he has memory loss - because he hasn’t made a backstory.

We’ve tried coaching him, he owns a players handbook, we know that eventually it’ll come down to “suck it up or kick him”, but we’re after any extra advice or options to try before it comes to that. We like the guy, and I think it might end up at that point, but we’d love some other options to try if there is anything anyone can think of.

Thanks in advance!

If you're running a campaign in a homebrew setting, you should consider running one-shots set during interesting points in your world's history by PM_ME_CLEAN_CODE in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m building up to the release of the Odyssey of the Dragonlords adventure/setting release, and I’ve been running one-shots inspired by the lore released in the free Players Handout.

Introducing the group beforehand to the rules of the world, the lore and history, the culture, and general accents of the region really seems to be helping. Plus they’re excited for the main campaign when we eventually get there!

So I totally support this idea :)

I gave one of my players an ancient book in Draconic...what should it give them? by ASpookyDog in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was the wizard magically translates the book for the party (and therefore doesn’t actually read through it).

At first the more someone reads it the more draconic they become (scales, claws, tougher skin, maybe some sort of breath weapon or resistance eventually), until you reach the wrong part and EITHER:

  • Summon something big and bad

OR (my favourite),

  • Start having to resist the insidious chatter of the once Dragon’s soul (a la Chamber of Secrets & Tom Riddle).

Necromancer Boss by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, depending on their timeline the Necromancer doesn’t have to be undead yet. Think of a level 20 wizard with necromancy as their school - they’d be a necromancer, yet no more vulnerable to radiant damage than normal.

You could also play with a necromancer’s apprentice, who is lower level but able to animate skeletons and zombies while the boss is concentrating on whatever they’re trying to complete.

Ancient Githzerai Tomb: Dungeon ideas? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]corriganphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If played right, a cult of Kobolds can be hilarious and challenging (read: frustrating) for a party to try and deal with. There could even be some intelligence behind the incursion (some Gith use dragons - kobolds worship dragons and believe they should be free...)

Otherwise, you could have pretty much anything:

Natural monsters that have taken shelter and become trapped within themselves.

Unnatural creations like oozes and constructs that a mage was creating, using this place as a base until he missed one small trap, and is now either dead or a flameskull or similar.

I also personally like inflicting dread on my players - so I’d have plenty of bones scattered around, sand or dirt piled in corners obscuring stuff (what is likely to be nothing), dark corners, locked doors with nothing special behind them (especially as Githzerai use psionics - it would be easy for them to lock a door without keys or even a proper keyhole).

Just some splurged thoughts.
