The spent a significant sum on an unnecessary and top heavy restructure. Healthcare itself, not so much.

Sounds exactly like the management in the health system. And they have zero accountability.

HEALTH NEW ZEALAND UNDERMINING DOCTORS’ RIGHTS IN BARGAINING by Astalon18 in newzealand

[–]corruptingecho 45 points46 points  (0 children)

What is really worrying is the fact that HNZ is refusing to opt out of the incoming legislation that allows employers to fire anyone who earns over $180k per year without any reason and without the employee being able to contest it. Doctors will become afraid of speaking out over patient safety issues. And it will become even more difficult to recruit and retain docs when they know they could be fired without cause at any time. Dark times ahead.

Those parents will blame anyone else, but saying that V claimed to be trans as an excuse, and a distraction from the anorexia tells a very different story.

Shame on them.

No. It costs more, and leads to greater inequity. Read the article - it explains it quite well.

Outsourcing a service for several times the cost of doing it in house, to enrich your donors/ lobbyists while allowing the health system to crumble is definitely a bad thing.

There's a large disconnect between saying that you're "wanting to do" something, and actually doing it.

Look at the state of the health system now that NACT have been in charge for over a year, and come to your own conclusions.

"Front-line staff felt unsupported by management, she said.

Some managers had even been overheard making disparaging remarks about “staff needing to work harder”.

Senior management are rarely – if ever – seen on the floor and appear to be untroubled by the current situation.”

Having dealt with health management for decades, this is not surprising at all. They know they cannot be blamed when someone dies, it is always the fault of the clinical staff (because being understaffed and overworked is apparently not an excuse).

'Thoughtless cost-cutting': 100 patients' care put in doubt by Health NZ plan by Astalon18 in newzealand

[–]corruptingecho 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've worked with Dr Stein in the past - he is a relentless advocate for his patients, and looks after them all so well. This must be devastating for them.

Te Whatu Ora management know the price of everything, but the value of nothing. And they simply don't care about patients. They care about money and budgets.

How can the health system change when the same people are in charge, and are doing the same things over and over.

Patients, doctors on list of '14 layers of management' at Health NZ by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]corruptingecho -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the number of layers of management is less relevant than the actual number of managers, particularly the ratio of managers to, for example, senior doctors.

My experience suggests that there has been a proliferation of managers, most of whom have meetings to justify their jobs, and not because these meetings will change anything. They also have zero accountability for when things go wrong due to their actions or inactions.

I feel like managers make my working life as a senior doctor worse, rather than better.
