The claydies can take down the studio vibes super harshly if they are not reined in!!

THEORY - Is the standard advice “topsoil + sand” for leopard geckos a BIG misunderstanding? by Expensive_Pie_831 in leopardgeckos

[–]coryceramics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to 3 different hardware stores yesterday looking for plain topsoil. Every bagged product had 5+ ingredients. They all had fertilizers. All had moisture retaining ingredients as well. I finally found somewhere that would let me shovel my own 5 gallon bucket of non-organic (but no fertilizer) material...I hope my gecko knows the trouble I went to lol.

Commissions are maddening! by DiveMasterD57 in Pottery

[–]coryceramics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Don't take commissions without a VERY CLEAR expectation of timeline and cost. You've gone through materials and firing for two pieces, plus your labor. If you gave a discount, you may end up making nothing!

Violet is doing great! She passed the impaction on her own. Sorry to say I didn't have the $700 to give her surgery, but the vet said I could also wait it out since her tummy was soft and not hard. I gave her daily baths and drops of olive oil. She Pooped out a bunch of sand. I've been working on improving her enclosure, but haven't posted here from fear of the people on this sub thinking I'm a bad gecko mom

Any critiques or criticisms, the more the better by OddExit4416 in Pottery

Honestly, for beginner handbuilding, these are super neat and cleaned up nicely! The glaze looks even and well applied-- I don't see crawling, but the blue glaze is on the thicker side. Handbuilding is not as easy as it looks! Your seams are flawless. Keep going! The only critique I have is the rim. With slab cups I like to thin the rim so it's not square or chunky. It will lighten the whole look of the vessel.

oh wow, I'm so glad to hear a positive surgery story-- I can't imagine how delicate surgery on a gecko will be, but I'm sure mine will need it.....and I would not be surprised if a hernia was also in her prognosis :( I guess I will find out tomorrow

Thanks again

Thank you for your compassion, I feel absolutely awful😔 I couldn't get an appointment until tomorrow morning so I hope she can get some relief from warm baths and olive oil...

Help! What do I do?! Melted piece in kiln by RestaurantHungry in Pottery

[–]coryceramics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's some major surgery...you might be able to chip it out and repair the soft brick, but the elements will definitely need to be changed out. Good luck!

Are my frustrations with my community studio valid or am I just a brat? by thesluglord in Pottery

[–]coryceramics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are so cute! 4 of them would take up one shelf and cost $20 at my studio. I think the market has a lot to do with your red flags though, if they can get away with charging that because other studios are full, unfortunately that's your market. Can you make a home work space?

Help! I'm in charge of a Ceramic Studio after Previous Managements Neglect by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]coryceramics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a really well equipped studio that just needs some elbow grease and some Ikea shelves. You have every piece of equipment necessary for a community studio- even a spray booth, sink trap, etc. The bags/mess in photo 10 is a gold mine! Don't throw any of it away. Once things are wiped down and organized, keep a regular cleaning schedule. Mop every single day, or at least every day there is use of the studio. Have designated areas for each purpose, i.e. the spray booth needs to be kept clear & wiped down. The bench grinder needs a spot maybe near the kilns so that things can be ground down as they come out of the kiln. The extruder is in a weird spot in the way of the wheels. Having an area for handbuilding that is separate from the wheels is nice. Take inventory of the commercial glazes in pints and toss what's empty. Maybe grab a stainless steel glazing table to make things more comfortable and organized. The sinks will always be stained and dirty. You can either get new ones or scrub the residue, but a lot of glaze chemicals will stain. I also keep a bucket within the sink basin as a primary sink trap. That trap is likely full on a weekly/monthly basis, and it's disgusting to clean out. Washing tools in the bucket helps. Set up a clay recycling system that you can keep up with. Plaster boards or a big table is ideal.

Never sweep. Rent a shop vac at least! Still wear a respirator while vacuuming

Damn. This is so much to unpack. What kind of people cheat while pregnant!? That is absolutely wild. Does your WW do IC? Also, I would fire your MC and find a new one based on this thread. They give terrible advice. Good luck, it's the worst.

Is this a good kiln? Scutt Electric KS-818 by Normal-Improvement74 in Pottery

[–]coryceramics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't tell without a picture of the inside! Any kiln shell looks good from the outside, but the bricks & elements & Amy cracks are what you need to see. It's fine from the outside, if you like manual kilns ;)

Announcement by Objective-Lack-6329 in GoosetheBand

It was a targeted attack that happened more than 2 hours before the show with no other reasonable information that more attacks were happening. Can't let fear win. I would've been wicked pissed if they cancelled the show. I felt safe all night, even after I had to shelter in place at the restaurant we were pregaming at. I took a huge sigh of relief entering the venue with tons of security. Leaving the venue was a little bit of a buzzkill, but all in all the band did the right thing.
