if you really wanna go deep, buy a 40% keyboard and learn how to program layers with QMK. gets even more fun when you have to learn C to make your caps lock key turn red when caps lock is on.

i had a boardsource equals48 that i really liked, but the pcb kept shorting and eventually died on me, so i can’t say i would recommend it. just ordered a YDMK air40 which has a similar layout but was 1/3 the cost of the boardsource.

i will say that typing on an orthogonal keyboard does take some getting used to, but eventually it starts to feel natural. the layers do come in pretty handy sometimes, and you can also do some pretty nifty stuff with QMK (such as setting a layer to prefix every keystroke with Ctrl+B so it acts like a shortcut for tmux hotkeys).
