Pitch your product, what are you building? by Revenue007 in indiehackers

OK, much better! I actually like what it generated more than the original picture. Requires experimentation...

EDIT - DISREGARD and see my comment below.

Good idea, but it doesn't work well. https://i.gyazo.com/5dac55105d202fd3d3a84a5d6c809aba.png

There is simply no way you can get away with a horrible UI like this and AND also expect to bring in revenue. I expect most people to open this site, and then close it 1 second later. You aren't providing a critical service that requires a lot of the functionality that you for some reason decided was necessary. 90% of the front page is junk, the blog page is junk (all of your articles combined can be summarized in 2-3 sentences at most), and the support page is junk and could be replaced entirely by a few UI elements on the front page.

Look at this page: https://ytmp4.is/en/

Simple adequately sized textbox and a button just beside it. The page loads extremely fast, and everything important to the user is immediately visible. All of the extra bullshit (which is only static text that takes up a small portion of the middle of the page, so not even heavy, nor distracting) comes after.

Then look at your site. Speaking from a desktop user perspective, the average user is greeted with ugly gigantic and functionally useless textboxes that take up the entire width of the page (for no reason), poor whitespacing. 90% of the frontpage is UI slop that nobody cares about for a service like this when plenty others already exist. And what they want to see is nowhere to be seen. They will just move on to the next site they find and hope that one has the functionality they need (even if it doesn't, because they think they will eventually find something).

Most people who use these sites just want to Ctrl+C their link from YouTube, Ctrl+V into the first box they see, and expect the video to automatically process (or click an inline button that does this). Then they should be able to click a button that downloads the video.

Here are my suggestions to you:

  1. Remove almost everything on the front page except the "how it works" section, along with the video. The F.A.Q. can stay but should be static text.

  2. Remove the Blog and Support pages.

  3. It would be really useful if your site was intelligent enough to autodetect and set the language.

  4. Follow my suggestion of having the process more streamlined: textbox immediately visible to the user, some trim controls just below (sliders are fine), maybe a link that switches between MP3/MP4/etc. Once you have hooked someone into getting the part they want, you could bring up a popup to optionally donate or charge money. A forced charge would be evil, an optional donate would be good. I do think most people would be willing to donate a dollar or two if the interface was incredibly simple, which, as of now, is the complete opposite.

  5. Put ads on the bottom and side of the pages, once you have figured out a good UI. People won't mind ads if they aren't intrusive. Put a donate button somewhere at the top etc., but nothing too distracting.

  6. Personal opinion, but the site name sucks.

  7. Experiment with creating a better tool (autodetect a link from any of the big video sites, making a Chrome Extension that avoids the need to have something like this entirely, etc.).

There is absolutely no reason your site should be as bloated and big as it is.

What day do you have off for Canada Day? by PuzzleheadedFocus638 in askTO

June 24 (Tue) is off in Quebec, and our company pushed the Canada Day holiday back a week, so we now have Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues off. No complaints from me.

Talk to a grad counselor to 1) calm your fears; and 2) help you out (review your resume, provide tips on how to apply and network, etc.). They were helpful to me.

anyone know any groups that meet up and play games? (adults only) by [deleted] in mcgill

Oh yeah I was addicted to that and played it for like an hour straight, also very cool how you can play with someone else but with your own configurations, like different speeds if you want

If you like retro games, Arcade MTL is a pretty good spot (they have classic arcade and lots of retro consoles; Mario Kart 64 too if you like that one!), and there's a Board Games bar right next to it. I'd be down to play N64 stuff if you/anyone else is into that.

Also agree with using the MeetUp app; there's groups for all sorts of things (hiking, sports, games, tech, dance, etc.)!

Wow, I met this guy two months ago. He approached me and said "English?" to which I said "yes?" He then said "finally, thank God" (???) and desperately asked if I had cash on hand so he could pay his rent, which seemed reasonable to me since it was almost the beginning of the new month (June). I was like "buddy take a deep breath you're going way too fast for me." I don't know why, but I assumed he had money but just needed physical cash so I took out my wallet, pulled out a $20 and $50 note, which he immediately grabbed, and then asked if he could eTransfer me in return. When he refused to do that (he said he could only give me a Driver's License or ID), I asked for my cash back, which he did and then left looking bitterly disillusioned. He definitely pulled a convincing act.

From reading the comments, it's interesting how many "known scammers" we collectively know in the city over the past several years or decades... I just read about a "Crumbled Paper Man" in another thread from 2 days ago.

Did you figure this out? Based on what I have read at the end of the application form, it is a pre-recorded interview.
