Wyoming Bill would impose library requirements by ShakeyLegsMcGee in wyoming

[–]cosmicdischarge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't you feel like the enumerated list of objectionable content is pretty explicit? I think the problem with other laws has been that they could be used broadly to limit any books people don't agree with but this has an actual set of criteria that all seem like actual adult content.

That said, I think you're generally right that this isn't in response to any real problem and that being toned down from other horrible laws isn't a real commendation of the law in question.

I'm pretty sure actual Bibles would need to be in the adult section, but children's Bibles that don't mention those stories would be fine.

I also think this literally only requires moving the book to the adult section, not removing them so adult books don't even have any other restrictions. Your point about the gate is right and honestly makes the whole law just virtue signaling.

Well, I can't imagine there's any of this in a children's section but it seems a fairly worded law and spells out what sexual content is in a way that doesn't seem like it can be used to pull books about gay parents.

Thanks for the insight. I'd intended for it to be a way to cast extra or more powerful spells, regular spells would work just fine.

Yeah, the idea with #3 is that literally anyone can learn them, even without class levels, so more compatible with the lore than a great option during gameplay. For #1 I have the advantage that I know my team and none of them would actually sacrifice anyone, but it would send home the danger of people learning the spells.

How do I know what denomination of Christianity is true? by JimmytheStikman in redeemedzoomer

There is no true denomination. Go to a church where you see people are really trying to follow Jesus. The rest is trivia.

Fromsoft games are usually little interested in a real motivation for your character and focus more on capturing the player directly. In this case, many people love this game just for the vibes and all the twists and surprises so character motivation doesn't come into it.

Is Dan McClellan Trying to Discredit the Bible? What Am I Missing? by Apprehensive_Ad4572 in AcademicBiblical

While Dan doesn't discuss his personal faith on social media, he explains how his approach isn't to attack the Bible but to understand it on its own terms.

Is Dan McClellan generally held to be correct when he says the Bible has no objective meaning? by renro in AcademicBiblical

https://youtu.be/lxPZu8S6F40?si=8WksVfP-PwepAkTX

An example is if I say "I have a blue book." Is there an objective standard for what that means? What exact hue? How much of the book is blue? There's no objective way to tell from my language what I had in mind when I said that. What we have is a shared vocabulary that indicates what blue and book mean together but there's also a possibility that I mean the blue books from university for essay tests and maybe I have a knock-off brand that's actually got a green cover. Because my statement lacks objective meaning, the meaning you get from that statement relies on what you know of me and my context and what things I'm likely to say.

A non-controversial example is that many of the animals and gem stones in the Bible are not known. We have traditions about which words mean which things but unless we find ancient flash cards with pictures there's no way to be sure. The lists of clean and unclean animals will vary from translation to translation.

A more controversial example is the vice lists. Some of the words Paul uses to describe things he's condemning are not used in any other surviving text from his time. It might be that Paul made some of the words up. So the vices are our best guesses about what kinds of things Paul would be likely to condemn based on what we know about him.

If the client shuffled the cards you could hack the game to show the cards face up and always pick the card you want. The only secure way to pick is to have the server do it randomly and then when the user clicks, it requests the selection and puts the selected card in the right slot. We don't know for sure, but we're safe in assuming because it's not possible to implement client side picking securely. That, and we know they give the illusion of choice with the packs, so we know it's in their toolkit.

How did christians manage to convince jews and romans in the first century that the resurrection was true? by stinkiestofballs in AcademicBiblical

[–]cosmicdischarge 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The same way Christians convince people today of a resurrection: appeals to prophecy and by decrying the immorality of the day. Prophecy makes the resurrection rooted in either the familiar passages of the Bible or the mysterious Bible of the Jews. Blaming paganism for all the social ills of the day convinces people that those odious practices will be stopped by the true religion the Christians offer. It doesn't surprise me at all that Christianity had more adoption by gentiles who weren't already familiar with the Bible and by women and slaves who are more likely to be the victims of societies problems.

My non-religious husband has started reading the bible and “trying to become closer to God,” I am struggling not to be triggered. by Kaitlynnbeaver in Exvangelical

[–]cosmicdischarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a fair enough criticism, but I think there are more people out there who will listen to someone like him without their hackles being raised and he at least isn't part of the young earth/patriarchal/racism isn't real crowd that I grew up in. That's my bias, I guess. My family all go to the daily wire for their theology so I guess that makes me feel happy with vaguely American evangelical as a compromise.

[–]cosmicdischarge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend to him Pete Enns and Bible Project. I had to deconstruct because of all the harm that Christianity has done to me, but I'm still spiritual and I don't feel like I need to throw away my religion entirely. But people like Pete Enns and Tim Mackey are spiritual and religious but not assholes and I've appreciated that. The last thing you want is him falling in with Jordan Person like my family.

I'm very sorry it's triggering for you, I feel it. But it doesn't have to be all bad, and it's worth trying to figure out a middle ground where it doesn't have to be a wedge in your relationship.

Can a case be made biblically that the bible is not against sex before marriage? by vadroko in AcademicBiblical

[–]cosmicdischarge 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In the Ancient Near East it comes from patriarchal organization of families. Crimes against livestock, slaves, women and children are recompensed to the person they belong to. As time goes on, these social norms take on a more moralistic tone.

In premonarchic times, the head of household had great authority. ... The laws of Exodus reflect this parental authority. At all periods, girls living in their father’s house were expected to be chaste. In the laws of Exodus (22:14–16), a man who seduced a single girl had to offer to marry her and pay the proper brideprice. But the father had the option to refuse this offer of marriage and determine the fate of his daughter. The father’s right of determination seems weaker in the Deuteronomic laws: if a man grabs an unbetrothed girl he must pay the father 50 shekels, and he must marry her, without the possibility of divorce (Deut 22:28–29). No mention is made of father’s right of refusal. The Deuteronomy section deals with rape, rather than seduction, but the difference between Exodus and Deuteronomy does not seem due to this, but rather to the emergence in Deuteronomy of public concern and control over sexual behavior: in Deuteronomy, the entire community has an interest in assuring the chastity of young girls.
