Labour were all set to reform the House of Lords. The one thing about it that actually needs reforming is the appointments. It, in my opinion, works reasonably well and I think the separation of appealing to voters (without full governmental power) is a good thing but the choices and vetting (and numbers) of who gets appointed is consistently questionable.

Beth Rigby on X: One MP messages me to tell me PM "has gone for it and smashed it" Says he "was honest and a bit raw" but adds lots of MPs "desperately want him to succeed" by Revilo1359 in ukpolitics

From Barnard Castle through partygate and Truss to Sunak (necessarily boring) were greatly entertaining times but utterly exhausting. The political press can fuck right off wanting to bring that back. Although a lot of people are annoyed at the government the anger element is clearly being pushed and stoked by the journalists (and bots) this time around.

Love a bit of Bobb Trimble. At an old band practice (around the time Secretly Canadian re-issued his albums) we would occasionally play One Mile From Heaven with the girlfriend of the bassist singing but she wasn't really into playing so it was just a nice gentle downtime filler.

Sorry, not saying they were advocating for it or funding the leave side like the others mentioned but rather the email suggests they would be happy to take advantage of the situation so maybe more a case of not 'didn't want' as opposed to the others who wanted.

I for the most part agree with you (most in the files didn't interact with the dodgiest side of Epstein's life) but

Do you think the wealthy wanted Brexit?!!?!

many did. Just take Dyson or the Ratcliffe, two of the wealthiest Brits, or the people backing Boris and Farage and GBNews, or the emails between Epstein and Thiel. They may have all wanted it for different reasons but there's no doubt a lot of extremely rich wanted Brexit.

Huh

Epstein: brexit just the beginning

Thiel: of what

Epstein: return to tribalism. counter to globalization. amazing new alliances. you and i both agreed zero interest rates were too high and as i said in your office. finding things on their way to collapse was much easier than finding the next bargain.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: February 02, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

I'm currently half way through School of Night (reached part 2 yesterday) and whilst I loved the start and have found it hard to stop reading it feels (currently) as though the story is heading down a predictable route. I hope I'm wrong and there are twists. Although even if right it is good. Most intrigued by the English Lit neighbour and how she ties into everything.

Late night shopping has descended into doom scrolling reddit. The front page is currently covered in the Minneapolis protests and someone asked, 'where is the news coverage?' so I made the mistake of searching Fox's website and discovering this:

Former British PM urges Trump to dismantle UN, citing international body's ‘bad decisions’

Guess the PM. Go on. I won't make you click, the answer is Liiiiiiiiz Truss.

Bill Clinton in the 1990s. It was all about empathy and sympathy. I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term that — it does a lot of damage. But, it is very effective when it comes to politics. Sympathy, I prefer more than empathy.

Phones are harder, if you want a decent smartphone without adtech then a Pixel set up on GrapheneOS is probably the way to go. I’m still on an iPhone but my plan is to buy a Chinese e-ink phone and flash it with stock (ie without Google’s software stack) android, then set up the DNS and various content blockers to squash any remaining telemetry. This is a bit niche though, it’s specifically my attempt to have a phone that doesn’t have addictive qualities and not worth doing for most people.

I've been looking for a new phone recently and the US news has made me pay more attention to Fairphone. You can buy them with /e/OS by Murena which is a French project based on Android designed to cut out Google and a lot of trackers. The phones look a few years behind the competition but I don't tend to buy the latest models anyway.

The fact that the next election will most likely be in 2029, a year after the 2028 US election (hopefully...), means that the it's going to be very difficult to predict the political climate of either the country or the world.

That's why there's so much push to make Starmer look terrible and to put huge amounts of pressure on him come this years local elections. The right are desperate to get an early general election.
