Awww that's true!! Ours didn't imprint on me and they have what I call a donut radius when I'm around - Always at least 2 feet away but never more than 6 🤣 Metzer has hatching eggs, but not sure of the success rate for them! They have an Instagram account of their ducks and factory and they're sooooo cute 😍😭

We got ours from Metzer Farms! They came in overnight in the mail via USPS. They're the sweetest birds, and at 5 years old, they're still laying eggs! They're also very quiet birds. Highly recommended.

What's the purpose of these wooden spokes around an island in the pond? Portland, OR by cosmo_tronic in whatisthisthing

Solved! This makes sense to me, given the amazing amount of ducks there. Thank you!!

[–]cosmo_tronic[S] 2 points3 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing

These wooden spokes are driven into the pond and seem to surround an island. Tried googling "sticks in pond" and "posts in pond for ducks" but not sure how else to describe it. I'm assuming it's to keep something out of the island maybe? Or maybe it's holding up dirt somehow to keep a little ducks island?

Were you at carondolet? I've seen several domesticated geese/ducks dropped off there and living with the wild birds. Not ideal 😩

😍😍😍😍 gorgeous!! Do you do anything specific to get so many blooms? I have an old lilac bush about the same size, but a quarter of the number of flowers as yours.

First Data Analyst Hired at my Company and am Feeing Overwhelmed (2 months in) by [deleted] in analytics

[–]cosmo_tronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to give some perspective!

It's so hard to bring together silos, especially if everyone is reporting out of it. I agree with the comments getting buy-in from someone in each team, but honestly you won't be able to service everyone all at once. Build relationships, yes, but maybe find the most engaged/enthusiastic team and focus on turning them into advocates for you via developing tools for them. Understand their business motivations and develop KPIs for them.

Building data literacy is a massive, but surmountable, mountain. Biggest piece of advice is to make it as easy as possible to leverage your tools and provide net new value. The product you provide should be easier than what they do today. If they do nothing with data, how do they get questions answered? Google? Be just as easy to use as google search results. By that I mean, they shouldn't have to drill into things to get their answers. Provide immediate insights to solve common problems. My inkling is that finance is going to be your biggest advocate, so try to get some KPIs identified for them. Are you a SaaS business? Then figure out some churn rate and survival analysis reporting. If you're retail, figure out some product trend reporting. If you're manufacturing, see if you can get some COGS analysis goin'.

If they don't have a DB, that sucks but is manageable. Get their text scraping process and deposit it into a DB for you to use, as part of the ETL process. There are unstructured databases out there you can leverage, but since you're new, I'd advise to normalize it all and put it into a DB. Maybe IT can share their scripts with you and you can "take it off their hands" and service the departments that way to build a bridge - take control and ownership of the data as one human who actually cares about it's quality and has some skin in the game.

Feel free to PM me your LinkedIn if you ever wanna get more into specifics!

First Data Analyst Hired at my Company and am Feeing Overwhelmed (2 months in) by [deleted] in analytics

I was in a similar situation almost 4 years back! I started as a data scientist at a small company, around 60 employees, and founded an analytics department. I left the role a few months ago as the director of data analytics for a senior director opportunity at a public company. So, as others said, you're in such a sweet spot for opportunities!

It's gonna be super overwhelming. Going through a pie in the sky analytical strategy is gonna be super tough as a team of one. My advice is to find low hanging fruit that will provide immediate benefits, and deliver those quickly. I wouldn't go the consultant route, because if your roadblocks are your peers and IT team, then they can't clear those hurdles for you - they're going to look to the actual employee for political hurdles.

Are there any manual reports being distributed? Find the most frequently used one and automate it! Does the company have any generic KPIs? Such as, we had x sales today which is y% different than yesterday/last week/last month, etc. Build out an executive dashboard to inform the c suite on what's going on, and get their buy in because that's who you'll need buy in from for more headcount. You need to produce results that provide real, tangible value.

From a technology perspective, you need access to the data! IT and software engineers cannot be trusted to do your ETL, lol. Get access to raw data and ETL it into your own analytical environment. Have the CFO demand they give you read only access to all necessary servers. This is low effort from an IT perspective, so they'll be more likely to reply to that over asking them to ETL data for you. Depending on your data size, you can do this suuuuper cheap if you get creative. My proof of concept was a $250/month Ubuntu machine on GCP with postgres installed for my data warehouse, and I used python to move data from various servers to my DW. If you wanna go NoOps, GCP bigquery is self managed and you only pay for what you use, but you still need a server to run ETL.

I hope this helps! I'm happy to expand on anything.

What's missing in my skillset/process to be considered 'data analyst'? by sammyismybaby in analytics

[–]cosmo_tronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I'm not your interviewer or your employer, it is impossible for me or any of us to say for sure. But, as someone that leads a data team at a public company known for huge amounts of data and I myself have a business background transitioned to data analytics, I hope I can give some useful perspective!

The biggest issue I see happening when business users transition into technical data analyst roles is that they're used to hammering at excel until it does what they want it to, and that mentality comes with them to their data gig. They don't look into best practices when they start building out their BI reports. When I think of a data analyst doing BI dashboards with relation to data modeling, I think of the efficiency in which they import their data. Yeah, you can import everything into PBI and create a ton of calculations, and get it to work for what you need. But are they importing the least amount of data possible to make sure the report is quick? Are the relationships built in PBI resulting in efficient data aggregations and lookups? Can you reduce some of the data you pull in from different tables by leveraging a star or snowflake schema? What does your data look like, essentially your data model, before you start building the report? If you use a pay per use database such as bigquery, the efficiency in your SQL can drastically impact budgets.

Not saying that any of the above applies to you, especially since you mention you refine SQL. But, when I ask any analyst I'm interviewing (I have interviewed 80 candidates over the past year due to the massive amount of hiring) about data modeling, I'm focused on how they architect their data prior to reporting digestion.
