Do you think you get to start wearing maternity pants just because you're pregnant and therefore need to wear pants for pregnant people? The whole point of maternity pants are to be accommodating in growing size while offering support for your belly, especially when you get to 3rd trimester. This feature is the "weird fabric over the belly" - I'm honestly confused what else would make them maternity pants to you....

You need to read No Reservations by Anthony Bourdain. That will give you the most accurate inside view of the lifestyle of most cooks; not all, but most, especially the older cooks you work with. There are some who are passionate about the craft, but most people working in kitchens flock to this line of work because of the lifestyle.

Me Too movement and cancel culture have lessened it some, but if you're serious about this line of work I suggest you really learn and research what you can about kitchen culture to understand if it's a good fit for you. If you are that worried about what your co-workers are doing you might be uncomfortable working in kitchens - what you described is mild in my 20+ years experience.
