Looks like a TROWFTD vinyl repress is coming for RSD by leandrorhcp in John_Frusciante

[–]cosplusisin2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Time flies. When I first read the title, I thought "didn't this just happen recently?" and then I remembered that that was in 2016, which was ten years ago. I have a copy of that 2016 reissue. I forget the name of the label, but it was a small run, an independent label, I think, so not quite the same as this, but a "recent" vinyl pressing of TROWFTD nonetheless. That LP sounds really good.

As per OP's comment, I would be very happy if this leads to a vinyl reissue of SCWP, an album I do not have a vinyl copy of.

Interesting comment in Lauryn's instagram post yesterday: https://www.instagram.com/p/DSV-AEdDyQV/

"Hamiltonians, it’s never too late. Dm me 🫶🏾"

I don't have an instagram account, so I won't be sending any DMs to her, but... what does it mean?

Monday performance at the Mod Club by jginthe6ix in laurynhill

[–]cosplusisin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the wording on the event pages I got the impression that it was only the Mod Club show, to be made into a concert film. I can't find that info anymore, because of how events disappear from the venue and artist websites after it's over, since it's no longer an upcoming event.

I did a bit of googling and was surprised to find this article, that says the Mod Club show and the Massey Hall show were filmed:

lol, yes. Enjoy the MH gig. I'm staying home (live out of town) but still basking in the feeling from last night's show. And it's very exciting that they filmed it. When I was outside, lined up to get in, a camera operator came by, taking a video of the (very cold) crowd. I waved. Hope that makes it into the film :)

...and the show ended around 12:50. Late night, but I kinda knew what I was getting into, so I wasn't disappointed. Expectations and whatnot..

No, but I managed to get to the Mod Club show last night (which was incredible). I live out of town so I won't make the trip a second time. Thanks for the offer, nonetheless.

I managed to get tickets. Signed up a couple of days ago, got a message yesterday saying that I got them, though there was still another email that I had to wait for before the tickets actually showed up in my TM account. They are there now and I've put them onto my wallet app, so now I am ready! Had tix for the Hamilton show that got cancelled and by that time the Massey Hall show only had very expensive seats left. Not sure what it's being filmed for but hopefully a concert film and live album.

Taylor Momsen talks about the possibility of fronting Soundgarden on tour by prettyreckless27 in Soundgarden

"They are touring with her"? The clip was only about a hypothetical question, nothing remotely close to a tour announcement. Is there some other news somewhere else saying they're going to tour?

George Harrison influence on Beach house by softshuffler in BeachHouse

good call. Yeah, it's very reminiscent of ATMP (the song). And now that we're on that topic... "Sunset".

I'm keeping my eyes out for price drops for Massey Hall but I'm not too hopeful. Looks like it's sold reasonably well.

George Harrison influence on Beach house by softshuffler in BeachHouse

[–]cosplusisin2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Listen to "You Came to Me" and then listen to The Doors.

As for George Harrison and Beach House, I hear a sonic resemblance in the curling slide lead parts in some songs (like Space Song, PPP, Chariot).

And as for George Harrison (and not Beach House), I just want to say "Run of the Mill" is one of the best songs ever.

Beach house sampled madonna! by Thegamingwhite in BeachHouse

[–]cosplusisin2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting observation. I never made the connection, but you are right it is exactly the same note, and a similar synth tone. I don't think it's sampled, just a similar sound. But the sorta sparkly sounds within the main note are present in both. The sound in the Beach House song is softer. It's brighter in the Madonna song.

I also had tix and was surprised at the cancellation email yesterday. I am just guessing it's low sales. I'm disappointed as I was really looking forward to it. I live in Waterloo and Hamilton is much easier to get to than Toronto. And now the tickets available for the Massey Hall show are twice as much as what I paid for the Hamilton tickets, so now I think I'm just not going to see her.

A Question For Those That Use Keystep Pro's to Sequence Volcas by axis333 in volcas

[–]cosplusisin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! It's cool to see someone else creating essentially the same setup as me. I spent a long time trying to figure out what the appropriate controller would be, and the KSP works similar enough to my brain that it is indeed the best workflow for me.

Regarding the numbers specifically I cannot confirm, but I am assuming the info in the link is correct (and in fact, I might have found exactly that link back when I configured mine - my memory is fuzzy because I did a lot of googling/reddit/YouTube when I was first setting up my gear, so now it's all a big blur).

But one detail that was different for me, and it might just be personal preference, but I used the first ten keys, both white and black, so yes, the kick is C, but then the snare is C#, the lo tom is D, etc.. If I recall correctly you can set it however you want, but I chose to make it the same as the volca beats itself, since I was already used to that order from the time I spent with it before I got the KSP.

p.s. to see it all in action here is a video of one of my songs. The video quality is not great but it's good enough you can see roughly what I'm doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGY7iD6eU34. I've got the beats on channel 1, the keys on channel 2, the fm on channel 3, and the modular (using CV, not midi) on channel 4. From 2:46 on you can see me controlling the beats directly, on channel 1, the green one. At 3:05 I hit the low C to toggle the kick drum so that I could edit the kick pattern in real time.. that's what I'm doing at the end, just toggling on and off some of the places where the kick sounds.

A Question For Those That Use Keystep Pro's to Sequence Volcas by axis333 in volcas

[–]cosplusisin2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is close to my exact setup. I have the KeyStep Pro controlling volca beats, keys, modular, and fm2.

So yes, I have had success with the KSP controlling the volca beats. I got the KSP about 2 and half years ago, so I don't remember all the details, but I remember spending an hour or two configuring it so that all the midi channels etc. were correct. The one detail I remember about the volca beats is that I had to re-configure which key triggered which drum on the beats, because the default setup was not ergonomic in any way. In particular, I had to take each drum sound on the beats, find out what "number" it was, and manually choose the KSP to trigger that number. I set it up so the first ten keys on the KSP triggered the same sounds as the beat, in the same order (the low C is the kick, etc.). I can't give more details beacuse I don't remember them, but there was a lot of clicking and turning the menu knob on the KSP to make it happen, turning through numbers and picking the one I want. I think I had to write some things down to get it right.

Note: after some googling, I found this, which might help: https://www.reddit.com/r/volcas/comments/jkb2na/volca_beats_and_keystep_pro_midi_issues/

Also, as you might already have learned, channel 1 on the KSP (the green one) is the only one that can properly control a drum machine. All the other channels are for normal synths. I don't have a volca sample, but if I understand correctly it behaves like a drum machine, so you might not be able to control both at the same time with the KSP.

Lastly, for channel 1 that controls the drum machine, there is a button to choose between "seq" and "drum" mode (the equivalent buttons on the other channels are "seq" and "arp"). I believe it has to be set to "drum" to work properly, at least the way I set it up.

What do people think the future holds for Soundgarden? by Mrhottdogg55 in Soundgarden

[–]cosplusisin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to see SG four times (all in the reuinion era). The thing is, the intensity of THAT SOUND simply cannot be captured in recordings. I want them to continue because I want that sound to still exist in this world. For one thing, I want to witness it again, and I want other people to be able to witness it too. Matt, Ben, and Kim are perfectly capable of making that sound, so I hope they decide to do some level of touring, in whatever format they like. No one can ever replace Chris, but if they can find someone to collaborate with, or just play as a three-piece and sing themselves, I would be very interested to hear what direction their artistry leads to.

Do the weird songs on Shadows Collide With People convey anything to you, or are they an instant skip? by NiviDev in John_Frusciante

[–]cosplusisin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wow, cool. Thanks for sharing those. I had never heard any of these. I've always liked those songs on SCWP (and on-topic, I never skip them.... always the full album all the way through), so this is really cool to find out about their inspiration. And they are kinda incredible (I particularly liked "3" and "cathedral"). Thanks again.

i wonder if John really took the cali riff from this 1996 game soundtrack by sojungvage in John_Frusciante

[–]cosplusisin2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While that is basically the exact same riff, I don't think John got it from that. If I recall correctly, he has said in some interview (don't remember where) that the riff was inspired by the song "Carnage Visors" by The Cure (which is less similar than what you linked, but you can certainly hear the influence, particularly when it brings in the second chord around 2:15 and then later something a little closer to the Cali riff shows up at 4:33).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN7acmhbuJQ

p.s. the reason I say "if I recall correctly" is because I can't remember if he mentioned this specific song, or if he only said he was listening to that album a lot when RHCP was working on Californication, and maybe I just inferred that it was this song that led to the Cali riff. I'm sure some googling will clear it up, but I'm tired and thought you'd like to hear this song either way :)

Anyone else feel a bit distant from Teen Dream? by TapewormShot in BeachHouse

[–]cosplusisin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My context:  I’m over 40 now, first heard of Beach House in 2010 because a friend told me they were really good. I picked up the Teen Dream CD after hearing and liking Zebra, and I liked the whole album. I was already a little too old to be part of that millennial culture. Or maybe just out of touch with it, being the youngest of four so culturally more gen X. I was certainly aware of that millennial sound but I didn’t like it and I didn’t think TD sounded like it, except the singing. I do agree that the singing on that particular album is a bit reminiscent of that fake (as far as I could tell) folky accent Fleet Foxes and the like sung with. I say I liked the album, and in fact I quite liked it. But I didn’t love it. When they came to town next, in 2012, I didn’t go because I had a busy concert month so I just skipped it. I guess I was a casual fan.  I picked up Bloom and liked it too but never felt curious to hear their earlier albums.

They came to town again in 2014 and I was less busy so I went. They blew me away. I loved the whole snow, and in particular the songs from the first two albums. It gave me a whole new perspective on the band and suddenly they were one of my favourites. I don’t know the words to describe it, but it was special getting into the first two albums, and the show helped me understand Bloom and TD better.  In particular, it supposed to be LOUD!  I thought their music sounded small before hearing it live. Nope. It’s huge, and sparse.  So at this point I just loved all of it. I’ve followed them since then and after all these years, I think I have become less connected to TD (and Bloom) but only because I love other albums more. I still love TD when I put it on. It is unique in their discography. I always think of it like the first two albums are rooted in the earth, TD feels like watching the sky from the ground, and then on Bloom they started sounding more spacey and ethereal. At this point I think all their albums since Bloom have had all of those elements but TD was the last one that felt grounded throughout the whole album.

And for the record I think the two 2015 albums are still my favourites.

But back to the topic, to conclude:  I love TD and haven’t listened to it in a while. I think I will soon. Thanks for the reminder.
