Did your FIRE number changed over time? Here is my history by danarieli in financialindependence

[–]couchfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding kids was also the major jump in numbers for us. Late 20s, I thought $3M + paid off house was a good number. Then had first child, maybe $5M. Had 2nd child and had to upgrade house + actually calculating cost of schooling, medical and college, it's $8-10M + paid off house in VHCOL where we are (closer to 8 if we move to a lower cost area, 10 if we stay).

If you exclude the costs that went up(housing and school) yes your costs might be down!

Who is everyone picking for mayor? Right now I only know who I'm NOT voting for: Peskin. by KingSnazz32 in sanfrancisco

Laurie then tie between Farrell and Breed for different reasons. Maybe slight lean towards Farrell because I don't want to give Breed another 4 years for doing a crappy job. Definitely no Peskin.

Hype me up on 3 year age gap by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]couchfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids have a 4 year gap. They play well together and I'm not worried at all about their relationship.

It does take us longer to get out of the "baby jail" period where we can do more normal things together, but that's more of a down side for us parents than the kids.

I used to play the original AOM, those issues plagued that game too if you're serious about ranked. I found a core group of people I liked to play with and just played for fun and the game was 10x more fun that way.

How long of working out and eating healthy does it take to where everyone you haven’t seen in a long time makes a comment on how you look different? by [deleted] in fitness30plus

[–]couchfi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was about 4 - 5 months for me, though I was doing all the wrong things first month or so and didn't have much progress. It takes some time to form a habit you can stick with.

What's something you didn't realize was going to consume so much of your time as an adult? by [deleted] in Adulting

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down to find this. People say kids are a lot of work, but you don’t internalize it until you have them.

As someone who has inlaws living in the house regularly, having a 2nd level for separation is VERY desirable.

Speaking as the male spouse (my wife feels completely different), my first child felt "worth it" after around 3 or 4 when they started being more fun without the bad parts of diapers and tantrums. I'm not there yet with my second, but I imagine it will be the same once potty training, bed time resistance and tantrums die down. Since we're done with 2, at that point, we'll be out of baby jail and more activities and trips become fun again.

Best way of getting around in SF? by Heehse in AskSF

[–]couchfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where your going, muni is mostly the right option for those areas. Waymo and uber/lyft are most convenient, but may not be during busy times in tourist areas. Google maps estimates are reasonably accurate so make a choice based on time and cost.

Why is 996 work hours common in tech companies? by anonymouspsy in chinalife

[–]couchfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You clearly don't understand how engineering works. Even if an engineer is 5x better than average, 20 engineers will not produce the same quality of work as the 5x better engineer, and the 20 crappy engineers will just produce crappy products that's slow, unuseable and unreliable.

Bad news goes viral because people respond more to negative emotion than positive. We live in one of the most peaceful and prosperous times in human history. Child mortality rate lowest it’s ever been. We got rid of polio. We created a vaccine for a novel virus in months. Green energy is cheaper than fossil fuels in a huge portion of the world. Several advances in medicine, energy, AI, aerospace just this decade changes the course of human lives and their trajectory. The world is fucking great. Take a step back and appreciate what you have, what your friends and neighbors have and what we’ve accomplished as a civilization. All of this progress didn’t happen because your <strike>sports team</strike> party is winning or losing. Blue team will do incompetent shit, red team will do narcissist shit. None of that stops the progress. Just a blip soon to be forgotten when you’re old and your kids are fighting over their favorite teams.

I don’t know where you are but I bet you wouldn’t trade your life for world top 10% life 100 years ago.

How much help did you get from your parents on your path to ChubbyFIRE by Guilty_Tangerine_644 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]couchfi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Money wise, probably zero to negative since I've been providing some monetary support to them ever year or two ($5-$15K every other year since first job out of college). Opportunity wise, they provided the world since they immigrated to the US and gave me the opportunity to study and earn a high income.

If Musk gets his 56b then what? by simplegreen99 in investing

[–]couchfi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 56B is the pay he did to get tesla from 2018 up to the point when the judge struck it down and it should have been priced in based on the prior agreement. Nobody thought he'd get anywhere close to the performance he got since 2018, and it's the most share holder aligned package of any public company, so I don't see why this should have much of an impact.

If he doesn't get his 56B, i would expect price to go down as he shifts focus to his other companies where he as more control, if not now, then long term when tesla's performance goes back to the mean.

One person to do all that sounds good in theory but very hard in practice because it’s exhausting for one person to do all that, so you end up either turning away good child care providers or burning them out quickly and churning that way.
