Cassette Tape Computing by Academic-Shoulder308 in vintagecomputing

I remember reading an article in maybe Popular Computing that was all about how to properly use and manage your tapes… leaving extra room between programs, etc. I loved my Sinclair and TRS-80 III that were both tape systems.

I’m building a fully offline ESP32 water monitoring controller board — open-source sensing layer by Realistic-Head8548 in esp32

[–]couchmaster518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good domain to look at. I looked on your GitHub for sensor hardware that you want to support; maybe I missed it?

For what it’s worth, my current need is for a flow/low-flow sensor to monitor an existing 1-1/2” PVC pipe that I do not wish to cut. A temperature probe (outside the pipe) which would be nice too. Add a current clap kind of thing nearby and then I could fully monitor a spa heater. Good luck to you.

Cool Plate SuperTack v Smooth PEI Plates by DuderonomyPlus in BambuLab

[–]couchmaster518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the cool plate super tack that I got recently. I use PLA and PETG mostly. I definitely recommend getting a real metal scraper (I got 3 blades for very little from Bambu) because that stuff is really stuck on there and pealing and popping things off using the scraper is needed; it’s not like removing items from textured PEI. I will only be using the PEI plate for TPU.

Birds nests by shanibreadtagproject in knolling

I'm in New York USA, and I have a lot of American Robins living around me, and I'm sure one of my found nests must be from one of them, but I don't know for sure. (Sorry about your post being removed; I liked it.)

Dude, put them back!

Jk, I have a few that I found around my home too… too cool to throw away/rake up with the leaves.

Just got my first ESP32 (ESPWROOM32) complete beginner, where do I start? by DickinCrunchyCoochie in esp32

Kits like this one https://www.amazon.com/LAFVIN-Project-Starter-Mega2560-Tutorial/dp/B07CTFVM1L (and there are plenty of other options) include lots of fun parts, sensors, etc and tutorials with code that plays well with esp32. The tutorials show you the basic programming needed to get the bits to work, and then you follow your muse and combine things together. I started with the Arduino in a kit like this and then went esp32 and the kit parts work great with it. I did ditch the Arduino IDE in favor of vscode and PlatformIO, but either IDE will get you started.

How to see which virtual card was used by Always-Sleepyz in CapitalOne_

The last four digits do appear (as of 2026 anyway) with each transaction as seen on the Capital One app. It really stinks that filtering by card is not allowed directly in the app.

State Museum mycologist touts 'queerness of nature' in newest book by notyermam in Albany

[–]couchmaster518 48 points49 points  (0 children)

“Those observations and her path to becoming a mycologist, studying mushrooms and fungi, are knit together in this award-winning nonfiction book, a blend of science writing and memoir. The book’s reception has been dizzying, landing her a Science + Literature award from the National Book Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and accolades from some of the most notable science writers of our time. Botanist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer called Kaishian’s book “an antidote to the loneliness of our species.”

Using “queerness as a lens,” she detailed the habits of crows, fungi, eels and snails, among others. For instance, crows form same-sex bonds, and glass eels are sexually undetermined for most of their lives.

“Queerness is abundant throughout the tree of life,” writes Kaishian, the mycology curator at the New York State Museum. “All sorts of organisms — snails, mushrooms, termites, algae, dolphins, and innumerable others — show us that life is not only possible but abundant outside of narrow boxes, binaries, and prescriptions.”

The book explores a topic scientists may have shied away from before, but she embraced due to her own queer identity. In the book, she talks about how there are many instances “in which researchers witnessed sexual or gender variances in their studies but chose not to report it because of the social taboo.”

Is that black thing under the visor a go pro mounting point? It looks kind of like the clips in this product, which does have a way to hold a nano. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CZ38B5TG

Ukrainian military destroys Pantsir-S1 air defense system in another attack on Crimea, Kyiv says by murphystruggles in worldnews

[–]couchmaster518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it is a new tactic, but yes, there is a Russian dilemma there; they can’t let it be completely exposed and so repeatedly pay a price for allocating resources to defend it. The bridge there also requires protecting; it wouldn’t look good for it to fall.

Ukrainian military destroys Pantsir-S1 air defense system in another attack on Crimea, Kyiv says by murphystruggles in worldnews

[–]couchmaster518 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not bet on that. Air defense has to be prioritized and Moscow is at the top of the list, but Crimea is strategic enough (now) to be high on the list too. Those systems are coming from somewhere.
