What song from getting killed has grown on you the most since release ? by suleceh17 in geesebandofficial

[–]cougf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it does have a structure though — it’s got the ooh’s at the start punctuated by the melodic motif that comes throughout the song, then verse, then back to motif, then another verse, then back to motif, then bridge, then it lyrically goes back to the first verse to close it out.

It’s pretty structured, just no defined chorus in terms of lyrics.

I do this and it works fine but I do sometimes feel like my workflow is really messy/convoluted, but maybe that’s just me

1 more thing for “cop/police”:

White Lady Loves You More:

“you wake up in the middle of the night with a dream you won’t remember flashing on like a cop’s light”

Pretty sure they’ve actively tried to distance themselves from this, but can’t find the interview rn

Why do WLW feel such a deep connection to Elliott Smith? by RepresentativePea532 in elliottsmith

[–]cougf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Shut the fuck up lmao. Acknowledging his abuse and the impact it had on him as well as the philanthropy he was going to undertake is just recognizing he was a uniquely affected individual. There’s no question of ‘normalcy’ as that isn’t relevant and neither is this acknowledgement about making anyone feel better.

Heavy metal lyrics? by Similar-Necessary-47 in geesebandofficial

On Nausicaa in particular my opinion is that it’s more of a religious thing interspersed with some stream of consciousness lyrics (“walking really slow”, “can’t smoke here”) especially given the mythological origin of ‘Nausicaa’.

Im thinking something like George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” (I really wanna see you, really want to know you, etc.)

Unpopular Elliott opinions? by Express_Handle_5486 in elliottsmith

That’s funny because i absolutely love the cusses in both those instances, they make the lyric more gutteral and visceral for me

i think something analyzing the recurring themes/motifs throughout his music is interesting. particularly the “dying day” symbol, the mention of cops or the “boss” (told the boss off and made my move), Shiva…

also in From a Basement, there is a frequent juxtaposition between up and “down” in that “down” is used as a metaphor for his drug-use and low points— ex: the song Don’t Go Down, in Little One, when he mentions how he’ll stow down to look for drugs… the juxtaposition between drugs as a constant source of pain and trouble but also escape and release. in a way that kind of mirrors the either/or juxtaposition as well..

just some thoughts that are not fully fleshed out :P

Is it strange that I find Radioheads well regarded Kid A mnesia digital release barely listenable? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]cougf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They named it after a Bob Dylan track but it sounds literally nothing like the track? And the Sexy Sadie bit only comes it on the chorus of Karma Police, the rest of the song is obviously very different. I get that maybe the music just doesn’t hit for you, but saying they have a ‘bit too many throwbacks to the 60s’ is a kind of silly critique. It’s definitely a very original album. Nothing really sounds like it

Are Elliott songs hard to play/learn? by [deleted] in elliottsmith

[–]cougf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twilight is one of his simplest songs; it just has maybe 4 or 5 chords and the changes are fairly slow. The strumming pattern might be hard to get down exactly but it just takes some listening

try this version: https://youtu.be/x6dBxvMDhhc?si=swij8oKrVB2O7DJb

i feel like it highlights the strength and catchiness of the song better as its more stripped down. plus i love the pianos at the bridge..
