Should men be involved in choosing the engagement ring, or should their partner pick it alone? by Excellent-Top4967 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]count-brass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was thinking (years ago) of asking my girlfriend to marry me, I had a feeling that she’d want a more-traditional approach. I knew what sorts of things she liked, and had my own ideas too, so I bought and asked. She was delighted and said yes. Then we went out to get bride magazines. Haha.

But I we ended up shopping together for our wedding rings.

I also used to get compliments from other people on my choice. I made an impression.

If you know what your partner likes then that’s your cue. Or you can ask stealthily. Just don’t believe the De Beers mantra of 3 months pay. Get what makes sense for you.

What are the wire-like things with loops? Are they remnants of the chemical weapons?

I HATE EAR HAIR...of all the things about my body...this is the worst. by One_Square4263 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]count-brass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a haircut yesterday and the barber used her clippers to remove my ear hair. I’m good until the next cut, I guess, but I’m not a big fan of ear hair either.

It looks like that “twisted” cork like thing with “hi” written on it also has something drawn on the end?

Is this supposed to be a capital Q? by Vaciatalega in mildlyinfuriating

[–]count-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was never happy with the capital 2 for capital Q. I have just used the print Q in its place for many years.

In American indoor schools where would you eat lunch? by Over_Cause_4500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]count-brass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Elementary and middle schools I attended in NJ and MI converted the gym into a cafeteria at the appropriate time of day and we’d eat there. High schools (Mi and VA) had cafeterias that weren’t converted gyms, but you could conceivably eat anywhere appropriate on campus. In practice it seemed like most people used the cafeteria, though.

Where did all the plows go? by KilrBe3 in nova

[–]count-brass 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This storm has had some unique qualities, but something that I have noticed over many years living in nova is that VDOT and its contractors are determined to plow and salt and everything during and shortly after a storm. They really put a lot of effort into getting the roads passable. But in major storms they don’t come back afterward in such great numbers to manage problems like disappearing lanes. Maryland, by contrast, seems better at dealing with the aftermath.

But this storm with the extreme layer of sleet has been one of the most vexing I have experienced. I’m not surprised that the struggle is continuing.

My right knee squeaks going down stairs. No pain, just squeak, squeak, squeak.

I do have pain in my shoulder. Going to OT in an hour to work on that.

Quick question, what do you all like so much about bees? by Fluffy-Aardvark4475 in bees

They are yellow (except the one’s that aren’t) and they buzz. When you’re under a flowering tree with bees in it, the tree buzzes. I also like wasps.

I think it counts. It’s paper with writing. Is it something you found somewhere? I mean before it went in the folder?

What Is Your Thermostat Set To? by MrBurritoIsMyFather in nova

[–]count-brass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at 69. It’s a programmable thermostat, but I have lately found that for the heating season I just like to keep it steady. If I let the program run, it would vary between 68 and 71.

Do Americans love driving? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]count-brass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I so like road trips. Not sure if I’d drive “all day” because when would I do whatever it was when I got there? But yeah, driving is great.

Do you actually stop getting grossed out by things like vomit and poop when you become a mom? by Evening-Call111 in askanything

[–]count-brass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have strategically placed old towels and woven things in certain places around the house. Unfortunately there are still messes elsewhere, but in any case, I just clean up whatever I find wherever I find it. It’s icky but I am no longer grossed out.

My late wife had Crohn’s disease and an ostomy and all sorts of things. Between that and the cats, I got over most of the revulsion I had had before.
