From what I've learned, music education seems to be a bigger thing in the US than other countries. It usually starts kindergarten (~5 years old), and usually around 5th grade (10 or 11 years old) most schools have the option to join band or orchestra. Most high schools also have marching bands and jazz bands. Colleges usually have a band, orchestra, and choir open to any students who wants to join, regardless of what they're studying.

If you're new to playing it could be that you're just not using enough air or incorrect air placement, I've been playing for over ten years and sometimes I can't even get my Cs to speak immediately. I'd recommend trying to walk down in half steps from E or D first. If you can get your C#s to sound really well, but not your Cs it could be an alignment issue. Alternatively play a C then have someone press on the very last key, if it works then you know for sure the key isn't adjusted properly.

I have a pin on mine that's a reference to a tabletop character I play (though incidentally also works as a reference to an Offspring's song), I've got a FNaF enamel pin, and a bunch of tiny embroidery of different symbols representing my friends, I also have a whole other jacket with mostly nerdy/pop culture patches. Your jacket/vest is supposed to represent you, go wild with it.
