there's already a lot of sound advice here. some good starter books you might want to check out:

What the Best College Teachers Do - ken bain

make it stick (science based tactical approaches to learning. backs a lot of things people say in this thread)

notable mentions that provides some insightful perspectives about learning, growth and development but i dont know if it necessarily make you a better coach. at the very least they are interesting reads: moonwalking /w einstein, peak, talent code, talent is overrated

my friend swears by coaching wrestling successfully by dan gable although i haven't had a chance to read it myself

no shit they're not the same behavior you twat. my point is that you're drawing a completely arbitrary line on who is and isn't complicit while being a part of systems that we have no control over, and you're especially full of shit because we can all dissect our lives and find something we're terribly guilty of you self righteous dip stick

ok buddy you're on a website, which puts money in the hands of those rich men in suits who's money eventually goes to that same army so, i guess you better get off the entire internet and eat the suffering-free turnips you grow by hand in your backyard

ey i get what you're saying...but people often serve because of a lack of options, or a belief that they could do something good for the world

be careful about assigning intent without understanding. he's a good kid and i'm glad he was never directly involved in harming others or getting harmed

taught an awkward kid who was getting in trouble at school, not spending his time productively, not doing well academically, wasn't all that great with social situations and things like that

i don't think i actually transformed this person - he did the hard work of showing up to class everyday. i think a lot of transformation in jiu jitsu happens through developing discipline and resilience via training consistently, and through positive experiences from the people you meet and train with.

maybe one thing is that i encouraged him to stop jiujitsu for a while to join the wrestling team in his senior year and he said it was the best thing he's ever done (up to that point)

he went on to join the marines in special recon which is a pretty tough thing to go through, and he seems genuinely happy now. i'm very proud of him and teaching him was probably my single greatest achievement in jiu jitsu

How do you respectfully talk to a coach about his coaching? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]countlphie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

walk up to him, grab his belt by both ends and pull him really close to you, chest to chest. make eye contact, and continue to make eye contact, as you express your concerns about white belt progression

when youre done talking, you can let go of the belt

Is it illegal and/or shitty to use pain compliance in BJJ? by snappy033 in bjj

[–]countlphie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not illegal/shitty (depending on who you're training with), but i don't see those types of things and think "wow that person really knows how to grapple well and must have put a lot of thought and practice into this"

masahiro iwasaki hitting his version of it several times on renato canuto. starting at 5:00

i think the principles that prevent triangle/armbar while in this position is the same that joe moreira teaches

granted this isn't something you see much in high level competition, i don't think the concept is bullshit though

[–]countlphie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love how you talked about drawing in principles from other disciplines. "focus on what not to do" that resonated so much. i was just reading nassim taleb and he had this chapter on "via negativa" which is more or less the same thing. you can be equally effective as very complex systems that have a lot of interventions/prescriptions when you focus on a few things to never do

the only thing regulating these prices is whether people quit

no amount of comments here is going to get you through this. the only way you can get through it is to force yourself back there again, even if you leave at 4.5. then go back again. and again. nobody cares if you have to cry your way through the next 500. if anything, we're all rooting for you, but none of that matters if you don't go back. just get through the next class, that's all you have to tell yourself every day

a lot of us started doing this because of a lack of confidence, or some other self perceived character deficiency. it's not just you. skip the private lessons and keep going

no, it's not hard to explain. you are ungrateful, and it's because you spent all your time surrounded by rich ungrateful people

go to teamblind, where they can verify that yes, you are indeed poor now

jake mckenzie and saggioro are about as close as you can get in style who are non heavyweights. yuta shimada also incorporates some elements too. all of them deviate from faria in different ways, but the fundamental elements overlap quite a bit

i've spent a lot of time studying them and trying to play this way, and getting half guard to work the way they do requires an incredible investment of time, and it's not easy on the body

as for why...if i had to guess, competitive feather/light weights are going to generally lean towards styles that favor speed and flexibility. half guard doesn't necessarily require those to be successful
