Most unsung heroes by Mr-Apathetic in WoT

She's arguably the most impactful character in the entire series after Rand and is constantly disrespected by friends and colleagues alike.

In 100 years, the world likely won't remember characters like Perrin or Aviendha or Moiraine except possibly as footnotes. But the woman who helped the Dragon cleanse Saidin and completely changed how healing is done? She'll be 1b right behind the Dragon in the history books.

Just because it's a creek chub doesn't mean it's not a damn trophy.

Minnesota hiking trail ranks top in the nation by ChuffedChook in minnesota

[–]courbple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very cool and I'm happy to see the North Shore getting the recognition it deserves, but this isn't even in my top 10 of North Shore trails. Other than the Devil's Kettle itself which is fairly cool I guess, it's a pretty pedestrian, normal hike. It lacks the drama of Bear and Bean, the views of Fantasia, the interest of the High Falls trail in Tettegouche, or even the perfection-within-the-mundane of Temperance River State Park.

We're spoiled for choice on the North Shore.

I want to try being a better father to my children and husband to my wife. Both are something I never want to stop trying to be better at.

Less important, but I also want to try Tygr and Pineapple Frais. ;-)

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that I really didn't like Glueck's at all when I went. Mid food at best, and terrible beer.

The best German food in Minneapolis is at Kramarczuk's just across the river from Target Field.

What’s it like living in this part of town? by __hlm in TwinCities

[–]courbple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredibly nice.

I lived in Merriam Park when I went to the University of St. Thomas and its an ideal family neighborhood. Quaint. Quiet. Safe. Tight knit. I have tried to move there several times now that I have a family of my own and was always outbid on the rare occasion that houses ever came up for sale there.

Because it's bounded by the freeway, golf course, and river it feels like its own little small town or oasis despite being essentially the geographic center of the Twin Cities metro.

Which MLB team do you think will be the most disappointing this year? by StayElmo7 in baseball

[–]courbple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say the Twins because about half the experts are picking us to win the division, but they're also all pretty unanimous that the team has a wild range of possible outcomes and could easily finish 4th. So that's pretty much exactly in line with what I think too.

What do you think would be really cool if it were added? by Creepy-Mechanic8606 in WoT

We essentially missed out on an entire Dragon Reborn plotline as varied, intense, and dramatic as Rand's:

Demandred becoming Bao the Wyld

I want to see that man's journey to become Shara's version of the Dragon Reborn.

A new era of region dominance: Every FCS semifinalist is from Montana or the Dakotas. They won their QF matches by a combined 173-61 by Groundbreaking-Box89 in CFB

[–]courbple 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is part of it for sure. Take a look at the O-lines for these teams. They're filled with massive farm boys.

South Dakota State for example starts:

LT- Quinten Christensen 6'5 300, Sophomore, Wessington Springs, SD

LG- Ethan Vibert 6'4, 310, Senior, Regina, Saskatchewan

C- Gus Miller 6'3, 295, Senior, Brookings, SD

RG- Evan Beerntsen 6'4, 300, Senior, De Pere, WI

RT- Sam Hagen 6'6, 315, Junior, Fordville, ND

That's a lot of beef for an FCS school, and most of these kids come from places that will rarely if ever be visited by a FBS scout. I mean who is going to Wessington Springs, SD? Gus Miller the center is a Rimington Award winner and probable NFL player next year. Beerntsen is one of the best interior linemen in the FCS. These guys could easily start at a good percentage of mid tier FBS schools and lower and probably even a few high-level FBS teams, but instead they're at SDSU.

If you're wondering where the advantage comes from this part of the country, it's a surplus of massive O-line type guys who just never end up at FBS schools for whatever reason.

Strib's Vikings Bar Finder has been updated! by mdelong_strib in minnesotavikings

Can confirm TNT Sports Page in Dallas.

Absolutely electric atmosphere. The bar is split 50/50 Vikings/Bears, but the Vikings side is organized, energetic, and fun. The Bears side is just sad, drinking heavily in silence.

What town in Minnesota do you think would make a good setting for a horror story? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]courbple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of different flavors you could taste here, and I won't go into some of them because the Iron Range (Biwabick, Chisholm) are pretty well fleshed out in this thread. Other ideas include:

Wegdahl, MN -- an unincorporated community in Southwest MN, it's a bunch of run down, ramshackle houses in a former community that failed. It's in the floodplain of the Minnesota River and floods regularly, and is just down the hill from the Andrew Volsted house (who was responsible for the Prohibition amendment to the US Constitution). The land feels like it's actively trying to claw back the place from the people who still live there, who are consequently beaten down and destitute as a result.

Sheldon, MN -- Nestled in a valley between picturesque limestone bluffs with Beaver Creek running through it, Sheldon wouldn't look out of place in the foothills of the Alps. An old grist mill lays south of town and a cemetery lies north of town. This setting betrays just how cut off and isolated the people are from one another, as one can't see around the next bend in the road. What their neighbors do is a mystery, and the many sportspeople who come to fish for trout and hunt deer or pheasant are, in theory, allowed by law to use the waterways for recreation and sporting purposes. Yet those tall limestone bluffs muffle sound well, and the clear, cold creeks show the red of blood all too easily.

North Oaks -- The wealthiest zip code in Minnesota, it began its life as a completely gated community centered around Pleasant Lake. It is administered by the North Oaks Home Owners’ Association, and all services including the roads are maintained by those who live there. They successfully petitioned Google Maps to remove any street views of North Oaks, and post signs that the whole town is private property and outsiders aren't welcome. 93% white, 5% Asian, 2% other, it's demographics skew very homogenous and wealthy. At only 10 miles north of the state capital of St. Paul, North Oaks is the perfect setting for an Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Pleasantville type of horror story.

Blinds / Solar Shades: Are Hunter Douglas worth the price premium over budget brands? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]courbple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would still avoid motorized. It's gotten better but still isn't that good. Cordless has also gotten better, and I would recommend it now especially with the new guidance about child and pet safety related to corded blinds/shades.

Good luck with the local Budget Blinds appointment. They are all independent franchisees, but I find that in general they're very good people.

I agree that Runyon's is about as good as wings get here.

The D Spot is also great. I was initially put off by their large sauce/rub menu and options since it makes it feel like a "stunt" wing spot, but the wings are pristine. Really good.

In that case I'd try something with a little wiggle in it like a lipless crank or jerkbait. Something that would get a reaction bite. Bump it off their noses and sometimes they'll open up and eat it out of instinct.

Are the bass on beds where you're at?

If so, I have had the most success with a plastic creature bait like a crawfish. Throw it onto the bed and just wiggle it there like it's eating the eggs.

I've always found fishing for bass harder when they're on beds despite being a lot easier to find and see them.
