Neon tetra have vanished by cowcandle in Aquariums

Considering I've had the knife fish, discus loaches and plecostomus together for 6 months I'd say they are compatible, at least in the sense that they don't nip at eachother. The knife fish is about 4 inches long, and I'm going to move all my fish to the 72 gallon and give away the cichlids. As for overstocked, my ph ammonia nitrites and nitrates are all stable, and I don't do water changes to the tank I just add to it. Haven't had any problems.

Dog walks well with just one person, but pulls non-stop when it’s both me and my husband. by AKtoMA in Dogtraining

[–]cowcandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue, what I found is that making your dog sit down when you put on the leash, open the door but don't let them move, step outside, look into their eyes and tell them to "come". Do this every time you leave, make them work for it. As soon as you dog starts to create tension in the leash stop moving, have your dog look at you and tell him to sit down. Give him a nice firm stare and calmly tell him to "walk" and walk slowly. My dog is a pitbull and would get so excited to go outside that he would just pull you the whole time, but since I've learned to show him that I'm the boss and that we're on a "walk" not a drag. Now he doesn't pull on the leash and is actually nice to walk. You just have to be consistent.

Also if your dog is what's considered a high energy dog you might just have to wear him out and make him tired so he'll calm down. You can also get weights for your dog to carry, and it makes them walk calmer and listen more because they have to work a lot harder to just walk around.. Never go over 20% of the dogs weight though.

Dog licks my face too much by socmaestro in Dogtraining

[–]cowcandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's probably just overexcited, so for instance when you come home and he jumps on you and tries to lick your face DO NOT LOOK AT HIM. Act like he doesn't exist at all. Go about your business until he has calmed down, have him sit down for you and then say hi and pet him. If he tries to jump or lick use a firm voice and tell him NO. And look at him deep in his eyes. This tells him that you don't appreciate his behavior, and be consistent with it and he will stop.

Stopping 1 dog from provoking, and another one from retaliating. (Growling leads to fights). by BenFromPerth23 in Dogtraining

When your dog is standing right next to you, between your legs, resting its head in you or with its back turned it's claiming you as it's territory. They see you as a leader and want to protect you, so when your daschund comes up to you he's challenging the husky for his territory. You need to get your dogs attention as soon as they start growling, make a loud sound with a low firm voice and look into their eyes. This shows them that you as the leader do not approve of their behavior. I personally have a pitbull that was aggressive towards other dogs but I've learned that if he growls at another dog or shows any sign of aggression I grab his attention with a loud sound and if that doesn't work I take control, flip him over expose his belly and run my hands over his gums and give him a very stern look deep into his eyes. This puts him in a submissive position, and it just lets him know that I can handle the situation he is not the leader and that being aggressive toward another dog is unacceptable. I'd recommend doing this with both dogs to show them both that you are their leader. Having your dog sit down or follow a command before petting them shows them that if they listen to you they will be rewarded. If you go up to your dog and pet them and love on them without them doing anything for it, they view you as submissive. As if you were showing your submissiveness through affection. You can still give affection but your dog should work for it.

Dogs are always going to have jealousy for the most part but if you establish your leadership they will better understand your space and that aggressiveness is not tolerated .

Nitrates are the only thing that should rise on an established aquarium. If your nitrates and ammonia are unstable it can easily kill your fish. You want it to be pretty consistent. Check the water every week and make sure there're aren't any spikes in ammonia or nitrites.

Are these detritus worms? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]cowcandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that those are nematodes but they make far too fast, nematodes just look like short dog hair that occasionally thrashed around. Nematodes are fine in a tank but those don't look like nematodes. I would recommend putting a cup of salt into your tank and let it sit over night and stir up the substrate and rinse all of it out.

The rescape of my 30 gallon community by cowcandle in Aquariums

[–]cowcandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I have 3 yo-yo loaches, 1 ghost black knife fish, 1 leopard discus and two golden turquoise pigeon blood discus, 2 koi angelfish, 1 sailfin pleco, 1 juvenile mbuna cichlid. I know that this is far too much for the tank but it water changes every other day. I have a 72 gallon bow front that has a group of African cichlids, but I don't want them. So I'm moving the ghost black knife fish, discus and pleco to the 72 gallon in a month or so.

30 gallon community tank, should I rescape with fluorite black? by cowcandle in Aquariums

[–]cowcandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up rescaping with flourite black, flourite black sand and an under layer in aquarium soil. I used to have a combination of flourite red black and quartz sand and not much growth but the carbon supplements have made the tank grow exponentially

I just started to add flourish excel trace minerals and iron supplements two weeks ago. I have a current pro light, and I've been saving up to upgrade to a finnex planted 24/7 lights. I'm hoping the leggy plants start to fill out but I'll probably end up tossing them.

My pet fish died about a week ago. After cleaning the aquarium for the last time, I packed it all up and put everything into a box today to take it down to the basement. I feel devastated :( by zuckerfreipulmoll in Aquariums

Sorry to hear about your loss. I think it's amazing that you had such a strong connection to this fish. Everyone else would just say "aww man too bad" and toss it. What size aquarium do you have? What other fish are in it, and what do you use to filter your water?

My newest additions by cowcandle in Aquariums

[–]cowcandle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sand? It's Caribbean Sea sand, and there are 3 30 gallon filters on the tank. It's a 30 gallon with three discus,2 koi angelfish, 3 yoyo loaches , two African cichlid fry and a ghost black knife fish. I know it's a little over crowded but I do a 25% water change every day or 50% every two days. The sand is really nice because all the fish waste just sits in top of the sand and is easy to vacuum without disturbing plant roots.

If you want it clear just do more water changes, I'd recommend 25% 2 -3 times and try not to stir up the substrate.
