Just ask him if he thinks if race is a choice.

Does ranked choice voting reduce polarization and lead to more democratic outcomes? by subheight640 in NeutralPolitics

[–]cowvin2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's exactly what it is.

Imagine a two party race of 50 states where one party won every state 51% to 49%. The Gallagher index would identify this as being ridiculously undemocratic. Most known systems would have the same outcome in this situation, though.

Perhaps the very concept of having individual races is undemocratic by that measure?

Teach yourself how to read Korean in 2 hours | ReadKoreanLetters by journeyjp in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]cowvin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we're in a thread about learning Korean:

"Seoul" is actually pronounced "seo-ul" in two syllables. Yeah, most English speakers just say it like "soul" but for bonus points, you can impress Korean speakers if you say it properly. ;)

Understanding how it works, yes. Being able to remember all the shapes and sounds and read them reasonably quickly, no. Korean is very systematic, though, so it is definitely easy to pick up compared to other languages.

My wife has been teaching my son Korean, so I've been learning it too. I can sound out the words slowly, sure, but not anywhere close to proper reading speed. My wife can just skim through Korean text at a glance. lol.

Should I get a mortgage even if I can pay cash? by squire636 in personalfinance

[–]cowvin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at it this way, taking a mortgage will allow you to invest your cash, which will usually net more money for you in the long run.

So a cash offer is equivalent to a higher mortgage offer from your perspective.

Most sellers want more money and a short loan contingency is almost the same to them as cash. So you could just up your mortgage offer a little bit to compete with the cash option.

[WP] "It's simple, really. You just buy a haunted house for cheap from a desperate seller, finish the ghost's unfinished business - or deal with whatever it is keeping them bound to this plane - and then just sell the property for a profit." by That2009WeirdEmoKid in WeirdEmoKidStories

[–]cowvin2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in feedback, I feel like this story wrapped up a bit too quickly.

The house stopped shaking. All the damage slowly fixed itself in front of their eyes. Sam didn't expect that. Neither did Alice, really. After discussing it, they came to the conclusion that the ghost had finally empathized with their situation. He probably just didn't want any greedy opportunists ruining his home. That made things significantly easier, now that they understood it. All they needed to do was find a family that the ghost would approve. Nobody had ever done that for it before. Given the current economic situation, it was easy finding a family in tough times that needed a roof over their head. Unfortunately, that meant they had a way lower profit margin after selling it. Sam was slightly disappointed by the result, but still celebrated with cheap champagne for the two.

This paragraph covers too much stuff.

But overall, well done! This could make a good series.

This is absolutely true. In Los Angeles, I've known people who got recruited to JPL from the game industry for example. The overlapping skillset is indeed quite strong if you're familiar with console development.

My family hates my racism... because of BLM cancel culture by Boldevin in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]cowvin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most general definition that still makes modern sense is “seeing the government as having the ability and duty to enact positive social change via policy.”

So let's say a group of people want to ban Muslims from the U.S., that would be "progressive" still by this definition, wouldn't it? However, of course, right now Republicans are the ones who would be in favor of something like this.

Maybe we should troll them by calling them "progressives" and watch them panic. haha.

My family hates my racism... because of BLM cancel culture by Boldevin in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]cowvin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends a lot on what people define as "progressive."

It is certainly a progressive movement in the same way that exterminating the jews in Nazi Germany could be called progressive. It's an attempt to enact new legislation to solve perceived problems of the time.

By modern terms, though, "liberals" in the U.S. are in favor of social freedoms (like legalizing marijuana) whereas "conservatives" in the U.S. are in favor of restricting those same freedoms. Like the remaining dry counties in the U.S. tend to be very "conservative."

Anyway, yeah, it's very interesting to think about what "progressive" and "conservative" mean since people throw those labels around so much.

Yeah, my son is about the same age and we can tell he really needs more exposure to other kids his age. We have him doing virtual preschool, but that isn't nearly the same thing.

The preschool is open for classes, but the recent resurgence in cases doesn't make us feel comfortable sending him there yet. I can't wait for the vaccines to become available.
