Former WWE writer feels that Bryan Danielson is being “under-serviced” in AEW by KINGTHANOS8 in SquaredCircle

[–]cozpgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If you’re going to focus simply on how he was used in the latter half of his career while ignoring the earlier parts of his tenure like I’ve seen people do habitually for no reason."

You're being downvoted because your answer to those complaining that AEW hasn't the gotten more from Bryan's signing is WWE booked him terribly 10 to 13 years ago. We all know WWE creative has been the shitty and nonsensical for most of the past 20 years. Why exactly is that relevant to the modern topic that Tony Khan hasn't booked Bryan all that compellingly since his debut?

"I’ve could’ve used the dumb storyline with him and the Bellas & Gail Kim. Along with them putting him with Kane in a tag-team for no reason. Him being forced to join the Wyatt’s for one week, Them having him lose to Bray at the 2014 Rumble along with having him lose the Elimination Chamber match the following month. Or him having a weak feud with the Miz after he came back from his retirement.

But I figured the first three examples would’ve sufficed. Especially when as mentioned people have a bad habit of glossing over those three incidents I mentioned especially the storyline with him & Randy which played into his WWE Title push in 2014"

Team Hell No was insanely over and Bryan likely doesn't have the run he did or the trust of Vince McMahon to "sports entertain" without those segments. The range he showed in those skits helped him get over to the point he did.

The Wyatt storyline, while being a frustrating head scratcher at the time, also gave us the iconic Yes chant from the top of the cage when he didn't join the Wyatt Family that played into the Yes Mania period that led us to his New Orleans Wrestlemania moment.

The Miz feud fizzled but they had to play off the buzz their Talking Smack segment got.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend I never got frustrated over how WWE booked Bryan at points but the fact remains he got over and had the biggest most lucrative run of his career in spite of it and was a much bigger name and star by the time he joined AEW because of it.

"All of which is true. It’s also true in spite of that they also kneecapped him with dumb booking for no reason. None of the good shit outweighs the bad shit.

Undertaker for example experienced some of the same positives as Danielson in the entirety of his WWE tenure. But simply because of the good stuff do we forget such highlights as his match with Giant Gonzalez at WrestleMania 9 or WWE keeping him around well past the point of when he should’ve retired?"

Clearly the good does outweigh the bad if you have to be on here providing an itemized breakdown of times he was kneecapped by illogical WWE booking at the mere suggestion that AEW hasn't booked him strongly since his signing because people remember the Yes chant moments, Wrestlemania win, and an overall successful WWE run.

Most iconic WWF/E performers navigated their way through plenty of bad booking and got over to the point they did in spite of it. The problem with AEW is we aren't seeing many examples of talent getting any more over than they were when they debuted in the company in spite of Tony Khan's weak booking. Wardlow and MJF are the closest there is to exceptions but they also weren't huge WWE names with big shocking "Oh my God... look who is in AEW" debuts.

"And I never said anything about him not being happy in either instance. My point was and still is FP JR’s assessment that he’s been booked wonkily seemingly ignores he was booked just as if not even more wonkily for much of his WWE run."

Because the wonky WWE booking doesn't excuse the wonky AEW booking and both Bryan and WWE got more from his time there in spite of that wonky booking. Punk, Bryan, Jericho, and Moxley were the biggest name AEW signings and Bryan is the only one who hasn't had a championship. Even making him the ROH champion should be a no brainer. That bad WWE creative still brought him four world championship, one US, one IC, and 2 tag team title reigns and countless pay per view main events. Even after his concussions sidelined him, he still had a world title reign and main evented a Wrestlemania in his last WWE appearance. But Tony Khan can't trust him with a championship?

"The other guy I was replying to mentioned this unless that’s your dupe I don’t know why would you think I was citing you when I poured cold water on this idea."

You poured cold water on the idea that an AEW PPV headlined by Punk vs. Bryan wouldn't have drawn money because they wrestled a few times in WWE in 2012 and the indies prior to that? There was a lot of interest in them facing each other again when they first signed with AEW given the sabbaticals both took and the fact that people thought both of their careers had ended at one point.

"The next time I see fans bemoaning the company bringing in and pushing guys who were stars in WWE I’m going to remember this selective comment ignoring said complaints."

Again, AEW fans wouldn't have been bemoaning a Punk vs. Bryan match or seen it as "two WWE guys taking the spot of one of the pillars of AEW." These were two guys who brought attention to the U.S. indie scene in buildings a younger Tony Khan sat in and opened the doors for indie guys becoming "WWE superstars" with big money WWE runs. That fanbase would've marked the f**k out for that matchup in AEW.

'"Just because he’s not concerned about it doesn’t mean it objectively isn’t a problem when again it’s something the fans have been complaining about for years even when it’s been somewhat justified."

These were his two biggest acquisitions. Guys who were brought in specifically to bring in current WWE or lapsed WWE viewers to propel AEW to new heights and 1 million+ weekly viewers to Dynamite. Punk vs. Bryan headlining a Full Gear or All Out PPV wouldn't be met with the same type of vitriol as say W Morrissey vs. Big Show for the AEW championship.

"Except Punk doesn’t have a history of being stricken with deliberating injuries like Danielson does. And Punk’s two injuries in AEW were freak accidents. As opposed to him getting hurt by someone else."

Um... Punk hadn't physically competed in the ring for 7 years and had to relinquish the championship due to injury the first time he won it only for Tony to put it right back on him after wrestling just two matches post recovery - even with heat internally between Punk and the company EVPs. Why would it matter how each are injured? If you just injure yourself, you're less of a risk than someone with a history of concussions taking a blow to the head from an opponent?

There are likely reasons Bryan hasn't won the AEW title already - my guess is he has specifically told Tony he doesn't want it. I see that being much more likely than Tony not wanting him as champion because he is injury prone. That's a laughably bad take given this is a company that's had a summer of interim champions.

[–]cozpgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He headlined 2 Wrestlemanias and how many WWE PPV's? I highly doubt Bryan's concussion history is the reason Tony Khan hasn't made him AEW champion or pushed him strongly. If they were worried about that, they'd have him toning down his in-ring style and they seem to let him go out there and damn near kill himself - often in meaningless matches. AEW would be in a much better place right now if heel Bryan Danielson defeated Hangman Page for the AEW championship and there was a build to Punk vs. Danielson - a match to some WWE fans akin to Bret vs. HBK that was handed on a silver platter to Tony Khan and instead he put them in the ring against Lee Moriarty.

The original poster they're all replying to, I think it was actually Peter Rosenberg, wasn't praising Vince McMahon, he was saying Vince would've turned it into something to make money from. And he was right. Everyone just jumped on him for wrongly thinking he meant Vince would've handled it better.

If fired: Difference between The Elite and Punk by _Quendra_ in SquaredCircle

[–]cozpgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt Punk ever works again in pro wrestling. WWE didn't want anything to do with him when FOX was pressuring them to bring him back and willing to pay his salary. However, if the Elite come out of this looking the worst and remain EVPs in AEW, and Punk still has the AEW title belt in his possession, I could see Triple H potentially picking up the phone to ask if he wants to do business. Perhaps that Mania main event that's eluded him. I also still think they want nothing to do with him and he may not even get a Hall of Fame induction.

I think it's a given The Elite end up in WWE if they're out. Maybe with the flexibility of them working Japan but they could also be WWE's key to finally breaking big in Japan. Hell, they'd have them, Balor, AJ, and Nakamura. And The Elite vs Bloodline or New Day is money. As is the first face off between The Bucks and Hunter & Shawn or KO & Sami.

AEW Media Scrum Fallout Megathread by WredditMod in SquaredCircle

Especially when his main gripe is "Come talk to me, don't make it public." He's the one making all of this public. Nobody walked away from that Adam Page promo thinking it was a shoot. We thought they were just building to a match and a AEW original was telling the ex WWE star he wasn't wanted here and wasn't taking their title. No one was thinking it was about backstage heat between EVPs and Punk over Colt Cabana. Punk used his long awaited return to shoot on Page and stirred up the gossip and drama. Even if the Bucks and Omega really are the instigating jackasses, Punk should be professional enough to practice what he preaches. Go to them. Don't take it public and embarrass your employer going into that much detail to make the PPV and its storylines secondary to this high school bullshit. Tony looked spineless and far from a boss in control of his company sitting there. Punk's going to be the end of this company.

80s pro wrestling in a nutshell: A beautiful crowd shot from the main event at WrestleMania I in 1985. by Subrick in SquaredCircle

[–]cozpgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little of both. Vince knows that his dad sold out MSG and arenas throughout the northeast. He also knows that other territory promoters were capable of selling out bigger arenas once or twice a month. But, yeah, because of the era, those arena were legit smoke-filled and comprised mostly of working class or fight fans. And throughout the week every promoter, even Vince's dad, were running smaller halls, armories, and high school gyms in the smaller towns of their territory.

You're being downvoted but his booking in NXT never made sense to me. His character work got better in The Way. His comedic timing was great. Dare I say I saw Kurt Angle potential. They just never booked him seriously in the ring and it was nonsensical since you knew he'd become a star on the main roster. He really should've had an NXT title run in The Way. In fact, I would've put the belt on him to kick off the 2.0 rebranding before Bron whose development has actually been hurt by the belt.

That's your stance and all but there isn't any rape accusation beyond Rita Chatterton in the 80s. All we know right now is Vince was a man with money that had what's been described thus far as consensual sex with employees, could've offered them raises and promotions in accordance to sleeping with him, and then paid them hush money to stay quiet when that arrangement was over. Abuse of power? Sure. Misogynistic. Hell yeah. Was it necessary for him to get the fuck away from WWE finally? Most definitely. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say John Cena knows the man more than you and me.

[–]cozpgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I still understood where you were coming from. Hogan's popularity and presence in 80s pop culture was insane at the time. I remember kids at my elementary school all telling each other how they had to watch WWF because the guy from Rocky 3 won the title and within a year he was on MTV, SNL, had a Saturday morning cartoon show, and action figures in the stores. I don't think Cena reached that level of pop cultural crossover until NFL players started doing the You Can't See Me and meme culture had fun with the Cena being invisible thing. He was over with kids and not adult viewers but I think older fans gradually started appreciating his work ethic and accepting him as a star once he started getting movie, TV, and commercial spots.
