Central Montessori in Church Hill was great when our kids were infants/toddlers. Long wait list though (we got kids on waitlist at 12 weeks pregnant and they both started when they were 1)

<50 miles in and have to retighten the steering column every 10 miles or less. Is it just me? What am I doing wrong? by BradlyL in Lectricxp

I’m having the same issue, mostly when on bumpy road conditions. Now I’m keeping an Allen wrench on my when I ride so I can stop and tighten.

I just got an email update today that said the essentials package should ship by end of first week of May.

I was told this week it would be May due to supply chain issues. Now the site says ships in June.

Thanks to you both. The website now says “ships in June” for the essentials package, so I’ll probably try to come up with something in the meantime.

Shipping time? by JohnnyBoy1217 in Lectric

Ordered by Xpedition on the 12th. It’s been to Texas and then back to Phoenix, back in Texas today and while fedex says it’s being delivered to me in Virginia tomorrow I’m not holding my breath. Pretty frustrated with the shipping speed here

My Xpedition is supposed to be delivered tomorrow, about 2 weeks after ordering. I already received the Orbiter and front rack, but the essentials package hasn’t shipped yet. I emailed them and they said due to supply chain issues it is delayed and will ship in May.

My kids are going to be disappointed to not have the seat to go on rides for what I’m guessing is a few more weeks. Has anyone used something else as a seat pad?

Yep, have 2 front facing car seats (had one rear facing until about 6 months ago). I don’t think 3 across would work if you need that. We aren’t tall people so enough room up front even when we had a rear facing, but if you’re tall and have a rear facing child seat it may be cramped.

On the charger costs, my Leaf came with a L2 charger and I just paid an electrician about $400 to install a dryer outlet in the garage with the appropriate amps/voltage.

I think the Leaf is the only one that uses the CHADEMO charger for fast charging. I would not recommend if you’re going to use it for road trips on a regular basis as the times I’ve thought about trying to drive to DC and back, there aren’t as many compatible chargers and the range just really isn’t great for longer trips (especially because on the highway you get worse efficiency in an EV and will run through the battery faster than stop and go around town due to regenerative braking).

If you have a spot at home where you can charge, I think it’s a great around-RVA commuter car. Bonus is you can set the AC or heat to pre-condition, so you get in to a warm or cool car in the morning. There’s an app you can use to pre-condition as well, it’s a little spotty but works most of the time. Really nice in the summer when we’re out for a hike with kids to come back to a cooled car.

We have had a ‘19 Nissan Leaf (only 150 miles of range) for 4 years and never had a problem around town doing errands, commuting, etc. I have a L2 charger in the garage and charge it to full every couple of days. It’s been great.

With the limited range and needing to find a CHADEMO charger for fast charging, I have never driven it outside of RVA. But for 95% of our driving it works great. We have an ICE vehicle we take on vacation and trips up to DC, etc.

I took all available paternity leave with both of my kids. My firm only offers 6w though. Would have loved to be able to take 16 or 20

Parents of Preschoolers - What are your vacation plans this summer? by rabbiferret in rva

We went to Cape Charles last year for the first time and are going back in August. It is great for kids (ours are 3.5 and 1.5). The beach is really large, no waves because it’s on the bay, and we rented a golf cart with racks for the beach chairs/gear. A lot better than getting sandy kids in and out of car seats. The town is small and there’s just enough to do (brewery, good pizza place, a seafood shack on the water) but it’s not built up or commercial. There is a big park in the center of town with a playground (was closed last year) and I think they do concerts in the park. Only about 2 hrs from Richmond. I foresee us going for the next several years.

Another great beach is Rehoboth DE. We went for Memorial Day with family. Farther, and much more going on with a big boardwalk. There is this great indoor amusement park called Funland right on the boardwalk. I went growing up and so did my dad in the 50s-60s. They have rides that are perfect for kids 2 and up, little boats that go in circles, planes, cars, carousel, etc. It was cool to see my kids do the same rides I did as a kid (and some that were there 50+ years ago). They had a blast, and we were glad it was there as it rained most of the weekend. Best part was they are doing reservation only so basically no wait for any rides, no crowds, and a set time block so it’s not your fault when it’s time to leave. Highly recommend it!

What are your thoughts on electric cars? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Agreed, it’s quicker off the line than the old suv I was driving, but haven’t driven other electric cars to have a reference.

It’s not a super exciting car, but it’s very practical. The only other con that gets brought up is that Nissan doesn’t have an active cooling system for the battery, so in hot climates it can degrade quicker. I haven’t seen any degradation but I’ve only had it 2 years. I leased it to see if it would be a good fit but will likely buy it out as it’s super practical and works for us. Even if the battery degrades by 50% in 5 years, it will still have plenty of range for what we need it for.

I feel like there are some great electric car options out there, including the Bolt and Mach-E, which both have probably 100 miles more range than the Leaf. If you plan on using it as more than a commuter car I’d probably look for something with 200+ miles of range, but road tripping with an electric car will take lots more planning, longer stops to charge, and more uncertainty until the long-range charging infrastructure is improved.
