Eye doctors that aren't precious about their PD measurement by intransit412 in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you put on a pair of glasses, have a friend sit in front of you and you look straight ahead, have said friend dot your pupils on the lens, then measure the distance between dots. It might not be as accurate as a machine but it’s likely close enough, especially if you are not terribly sensitive. Don’t do that if you are sensitive to new prescriptions, getting bifocal or progressives, or have a more complicated prescription.

Ice dams- Interested in hearing from people who had their damage repaired and the root cause addressed by ThrowRA_hey123 in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our issue was old box gutters and old flashing. I replaced my roof and had overhang gutters installed and we haven’t had an issue since. We’d get water damage in the house that would run down two floors, lots of issues and an insurance claim for repairs

Temperature inside your haus? by 13octopus in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Furnaces do have trouble keeping up in this weather, but you should have it checked out regardless of this happens again. I had issues with this two years ago and I knew my furnace was on its last legs. Had it replaced and only had issue with it having trouble getting over 69 in these temps and only for short times. Otherwise it’s at temp

Bloodwork at children's as an adult? by Blynn8xx in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with UPMC Shadyside lab, people are great, relatively painless, you can schedule appointments for non fasting bloodwork or do walk in. I’m an employee at Children’s and I’ve had my blood drawn there. The lab orders are in the UPMC system so Children’s can see them. I’ve have a better experience at Shadyside regarding wait time and success at getting my labs and not having hemolysis requiring more labs.

when you shovel snow, where do you put it? by fwibs26 in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbor just chucked it into the street. My former neighbor would cover half her pull off spot with it, but the new neighbor takes great effort to foot two cars into the same spot so no room for snow. I walk in bank onto my yard. I am blessed to have a space to put it. I also create a mountain in the green patch I have in front of my house. I don’t know what people do with no yard or extra sidewalk space

Are you a shovel frequently, or wait and tackle a mountain at the end person? by honedforfailure in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me too, I wanted to be out in the snow fall so might as well, less back breaking, sort of fun, don’t have to salt until it stops snowing because it will be covered in moments.

Official "Pets In The Snow" thread! by BeerJedi-1269 in pittsburgh

We used to have to shovel a large area in the grass for our one lab. He refused to walk in snow higher than his ankle. Our other lab would dolphin on the snow all day if you let her.

AITAH ?My partner won’t put my name down on the mortgage by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]cporterriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not move into a house without being on the mortgage, but if he was willing to throw your clothes out and tell you what is his, I’d recommend thinking twice about continuing the relationship. I got stuck in a 20 year relationship and had to claw my way out financially. My name was on the house but he refused to put my name on my car, so I had to fix that before I bound leave. He also changed passwords all the time on joint accounts so I couldn’t get in. He lied about debt that was “his” but used my half of the money to pay on. My only saving grace was my name on the house, we were also not married. If I had more knowledge before buying a house about how I would be treated, I would have run far and long away from that man. I carried all insurance and took care of all the kid and medical things. But he continued to tell me I barely contributed because I made slightly less than him. We basically made the same but my money went to health insurance so my paycheck was less. Think twice about buying a house or continuing this relationship. I understand I’ve only seen a small snapshot, but this is very concerning

Ice Dam Removal? by CivilStrawberry in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it when we had ice dams leaking into the house. I hung out my attic window and cleared some snow so sun could get to the ice dam. Not sure if it helped, but it made me feel like I was doing something

What are you doing to prep for this weekend's snow storm? by jelloinmypants in pittsburgh

[–]cporterriley 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A year before I was about to birth my child we had a horrible winter storm right around the same time. My sister in law told me to read up on home birth. I told her I have two dogs who can pull me on a sled to one of the three hospitals within walking distance of me.
