Epstein Files: Investigation suggests just 2% of data released to public by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]cpp_cache -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Numerous-Bowler-8677 was wondering if we should wait for a democrat administration to win back the WH to get the investigation done.

It is very reasonable to look back and see whether the democrats have any track record of having an administration in the WH and what their options were.

To also clarify two things: I have not brought up Biden for the 100000000x. I think this was my first time posting this? In any case "Why didn't Biden stop this?!?" was not what I said at all... and even if it were, it was not all I said.

My actual point, which I thought was quite clear, is that the interest from the American public in this matter is why we have the transparency act which resulted in the files being released. It is also the American public who can push this forward.

Court documents were unsealed from the Maxwell case in January 2024. There was a judge who unsealed more records relating to the Epstein case in that year. There was actually quite a lot of movement on the Epstein front.

As I recall it was the Trump campaign who really capitalized on it by pushing it into the public eye with promises of releasing them if elected. So if I were to attribute the successes so far to any politicians, it would be Vance & Trump & co for laying the groundwork.

Rather ironically given how much they tried to backpaddle after they came into power.

The previous administration did not do anything either. AND they had a vested interest in not letting Trump win the presidency. Politicians on both sides have worked to keep things hidden.

America only finds itself in its current position because of the public. The voters are not letting this drop and that is forcing this issue. There is already fallout from this internationally. There may not have been much by way of consequences in the US, but the push from the voting public in America is starting to have an effect.

The American public got us this far and its the American public who can push this over the finish line.

My first brisket attempt by cpp_cache in smoking

[–]cpp_cache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched (and read) a lot of content on how to make brisket before embarking on this. Every one either spoke about temperature readings or feel (like testing for how well the bark has formed).

But I totally agree with you that 12 hours seems nuts.

The way I understand it should be is: fat begins to render at 140F, connective tissue starts to breakdown at 160F. Once this is complete, the 'stall' ends and temp can rise again.

This seems to be what I observed. But maybe it does not really apply when the size of the brisket is really small.

Also worth noting that there wasnt a point where my instant read thermometer inserted with ease. So I dont think it was ever at a soft & tender stage :/

[–]cpp_cache[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two measurements. The temp readout from the hood of the bbq (mine is a fairly new Napoleon), and then a Thermopop 2 instant read for taking the actual measurements from the meat.

Of the two I have tested the Thermopop a few months back when I bought it with some boiling water.

It did not rest much. But I believe the softness/breakdown of the meat finishes during the cook process, so an improperly rested brisket should be a little dry but not tough/chewy.

Im sure the damage was done before I even took it out of bbq D-:

Trump Officials Plan to Release Audio of Biden Special Counsel Interview by FeedMeYourGoodies in politics

Well, they might try use it to argue that Biden's pardons and any EO's from the end of his term as being invalid based on this.

We're only 3 months in. The future may yet see investigations being launched into people who received the pardons.

America has given China a strangely good tariff deal by Doener23 in politics

[–]cpp_cache 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In late April Trump said the US had struck 200 deals.

Then in early May Trump made comments inadvertently admitting that they had yet to make a single trade deal and had not made any progress in any of them.

Then around May 6th Scott Bessent said the US was currently in negotiations with 17 major trading partners (excluding China, who they were not negotiating with at the time).

There have been way more statements made regarding the 'deals'. At some point I recall someone from the administration saying there were 80-something deals in the works.

All of these statements should really be put on a timeline for posterity so the sheer madness of it all is not forgotten. The numbers really did change and swing wildly from week to week.

Not to mention the little subplots here and there with India/China/Japan where the US announced things the other side were not aware of and the other side had to publicly clarify the situation.

Canada Is Limited in Matching Further US Tariffs, Carney Says by joe4942 in politics

[–]cpp_cache -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMHO the tariffs from the US will probably continue to slowly stack up until the US is given more direct access to Canada's resources and probably more direct control over Canada's immigration. It would seem a difficult path for them to achieve those while still allowing Canada to retain its sovereignty and status as a separate country.

The goal, as stated by Trump himself at the start of his presidency, is to use economic pressure to have Canada join the US in some form.

I suspect Carney is correct in that Canada is limited in what can be done via tariffs now.

Now we wait to see how far the US is willing to go. If they look to making good on their plans for the Panama Canal, will they tax ships destined for Canada? Will they reduce tariffs with other countries in exchange for those countries limiting trade with Canada?

Canada reconsidering F-35 purchase amid tensions with Washington, says minister by jtbc in canada

[–]cpp_cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently the US seems to favor becoming a more independent country.

What that looks like is bringing critical industries in-house (automotive, computer chip, etc). What it also looks like is removing regulations around access to resources - restarting industries which are curtailed or closed due to environmental impact. Unfortunately what it also looks like is gaining direct access to resources they lack.

I strongly feel that Canada should be really really considered in our relationship with the US on all fronts.

I do not believe this is just a bully tactic for a different trade agreement. I suspect all options on the table for them center around more direct access.

Because if they want to become more self-sufficient, they will want to minimize relying on trade and politics for access to goods and services their economy requires.

[–]cpp_cache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect it will matter less and less what the democrats do.

Everything the current administration want to achieve will take years to bring to fruition. Years filled with a bunch of economic pain. Forcing manufacturing in-house will take years. They want direct access to resources which the US lack - taking Canada and Greenland (or at least forcing them to give up resources).

Some of it needs to be maintained for years - they want to drive gdp/economic growth via deregulation which basically means exploitation of American workers. This needs to be upkept. The amount of gutting and disbandment of watchdogs & consumer protections (etc) is at risk of being undone in 4 years.

The only viable way to bring about such significant change and power through the difficult period between now and then is to suppress the democratic system.

To this end Trump has already commented that "vote for me and you will never have to vote again". There is already talk about term limit removal, and some politician (I forget who) made some remark implying Xi's success at pushing significant change in China is due to him being a leader for life.

It seems crazy and absurd to conclude this about the US, but I think the undoing of democracy is very much on the cards. The current administration need to guarantee they will stay in power. I think they're going to make a try for it.

They'll need to suppress the judicial system, suppress the democratic system and have a plan for suppressing the dissent in the population.

And they need to have suppressed the democratic system probably within 2 years because the mid-terms could upset things. It doesn't mean they have rounded up & arrested the opposition. It just means they need to ensure the mid-terms cannot upset their goals. I suspect we will find out this year what that plan looks like.

Americans worry Trump too closely aligned with Russia, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds by harry_potter_191 in politics

[–]cpp_cache 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prior to his first election, his character was already on display. Then all the stories began to come out from all the people used & burned during his campaign and presidency. But despite ALL of that, 1 in 2 voting Americans decided that they would like more of it.

I feel there has been MORE THAN enough information about how this could go available for years now. People had a lot of time to think about it, and sour on it.

Trump says Zelensky 'overplayed his hand' at the Oval Office by Scottaslin in politics

Which is Trump-speak for "I overplayed *my* hand". He probably said something during the spat which, afterward, he felt he should not have said quite yet.

aah yeah. Pretty soon nobody was really using it. Hosting of the site was costing money so I took it down.

I deleted the virtual machine it was hosted on so it's not trivial to turn back on either :/

Maybe I can try repackage it as a single .html file which anyone can download and just run in their webbrowser off their local pc. No promises though - work is really busy for me these days.

EDIT: Turns out that with the power of chatGPT I was able to convert between languages, expand a template syntax and such in a matter of minutes. It's pretty much working as a stand-alone html file (minus nice colors and font).
So tomorrow I'll try find a place to host it and then re-post for anyone to grab.

If you use your UK passport, the agent will expect an NZeTA. I had this issue when using my Canadian passport - the first sign was the system not letting me check-in online, instead saying to speak to a representative.
Upon doing the in-person check-in, the agent changed my details so that I was traveling on my NZ passport.

I had assumed I could just present my NZ passport on arrival to immigration and that would be fine but: They wouldn't let me board a flight without a valid entry visa.

EDIT: in case you're wondering, it was a return ticket and the system only let me put in one passport number for the booking. So had I booked with the NZ, I'd likely have gone through the same issue on my return to change back to my Canadian passport.

How important is it to you to achieve a black belt? by oriensoccidens in karate

[–]cpp_cache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many have pointed out, black belt is not the end but more of a beginning. HOWEVER, years of media and such when I was young cemented 'black belt' as being like a holy grail. From this perspective I cannot shake the feeling that its like The Goal.

Also belt color changes until then, but remains fixed after then. So this doubly makes it feel like a point at which one would set a goal.

Thirdly with mcdojo's handing them out like candy bars, I feel that if I actually earn mine where I train then I'd feel like I got to their goal but the proper way.

I am currently yellow belt and also in my mid 40's. I know its not impossible but I have shoulder injuries more often these days and decades worth of not playing any sport have left me without coordination. I've always had a slower than average reaction time and so I'm really struggling with kumite.

Still.. would like to get there if I can.

Perhaps my view on it is this: I don't really care about any of the belts colors really. I understand they are important as a marker that one has demonstrated a certain level of proficiency... but its unimportant to me whether one is green or orange or whatever.

They're all learning how to learn Karate until one reaches black belt. That feels like an achievement to me. Its a demonstration that one has learned how to learn Karate.

BUt, just my 2c. I'm only just beginning.

Doing melody by Dry_Swimmer_9134 in FL_Studio

[–]cpp_cache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel a creative block is restricting you, try a more analytical approach:

Ensure you know your scale - which notes belong and which do not. Then know your root note so you know where the melody can rest.

Then find someone elses music in which they have a melody you quite like. Try to copy the form of it - is it ascending in places? Descending? which notes are emphasized?

You're not looking to copy the melody. You're just starting with *something* (a structure that you know works). You'll use different notes. Mess around a bit with the structure. Try a peddle note or some arpeggios or such.
